The Quran maps the color black across the physical landscape of creation, the boundaries of time, and the spiritual shifts of the human face. Rather than treating darkness solely as a void, the text points to the concrete reality of jet black pathways striping the mountains (35:27) and the literal blackness of the night sky receding at dawn. Simultaneously, it uses the color to record the visible changes of a person overwhelmed by worldly grief, as well as the ultimate physical manifestation of regret in the afterlife.
How does the Quran use black to mark time?
Fasting during Ramadan is regulated by observing the daily transition between night and day. The Quran instructs believers to eat and drink "until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black" (2:187). This precise visual metaphor compares the lingering darkness of the night sky and the first horizontal streak of morning light to two contrasting threads. When this verse was first revealed, some companions took the instruction at face value. As Ibn Kathir notes (تفسير ابن كثير - ط أولاد الشيخ, 2/198), a believer once placed one black cord and one white cord under his pillow, attempting to determine the exact moment to begin his fast by looking at them in the dark bedroom. The Quran uses this stark contrast between black and white not just as a natural clock, but as a visible boundary marking the devotional limits set by God. Once the black thread of night is clearly separated from the dawn, believers must abstain from food, drink, and intimacy until nightfall, guarding themselves against doing wrong.
What does a darkened face signify?
In the Quranic vocabulary, a face turning black signifies a profound internal crisis, shifting from worldly gloom to eternal despair. Describing the social customs of pre-Islamic Arabia, the text observes the intense reaction to the birth of a daughter: when a man receives the news of a baby girl, "his face darkens and he is filled with gloom" (16:58). The physical darkening represents an immediate emotional response, marking a man entirely overwhelmed by his own bitter disappointment.
This worldly response foreshadows a more permanent physical transformation on the Day of Judgment. The Quran divides humanity at the resurrection into two distinct visual categories based on their spiritual records: "On the Day when some faces brighten and others darken" (3:106). To those with darkened faces, it will be asked how they could reject their faith after believing. The blackness of their faces serves as the physical mark of their disbelief, immediately preceding the command to taste the torment for their choices.
Where does black appear in the natural world?
Beyond human emotion, black is a designated pigment in God's creation, entirely neutral and intended for reflection. When drawing attention to the sheer variety of the earth, the Quran points out that just as rain produces fruits of varied colors, the mountains themselves are built with "layers of white and red of various hues, and jet black" (35:27). The jet black stone is presented as a deliberate contrast within the landscape, a geological testament to the Creator’s artistry. God sends water down from the sky, and from that single source emerges a world categorized by startling, contrasting hues, with black standing as a prominent feature of the mountain paths.
This same natural cycle uses dark coloration to signal the end of a lifespan. The physical world is constantly moving toward its appointed conclusion. Just as God brings forth green vegetation, He eventually reduces it to its final, withered state. The vibrant herbage that once grew from the earth dries out and decays, until He finally makes it dark debris (87:5).

You [believers] are permitted to lie with your wives during the night of the fast: they are [close] as garments to you, as you are to them. God was aware that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy and pardoned you: now you can lie with them- seek what God has ordained for you- eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black. Then fast until nightfall. Do not lie with them during the nights of your devotional retreat in the mosques: these are the bounds set by God, so do not go near them. In this way God makes His messages clear to people, that they may guard themselves against doing wrong.
On the Day when some faces brighten and others darken, it will be said to those with darkened faces, ‘How could you reject your faith after believing? Taste the torment for doing so,’
When one of them is given news of the birth of a baby girl, his face darkens and he is filled with gloom.
Have you [Prophet] not considered how God sends water down from the sky and that We produce with it fruits of varied colours; that there are in the mountains layers of white and red of various hues, and jet black;
then made it dark debris.
