At dawn, the Prophet left his home to physically assign battle positions to the believers (3:121). Even before the clash began, the stress of the impending fight weighed heavily on the ranks; two entire groups were on the verge of losing heart, remaining on the field only because God protected them and required them to place their trust in Him (3:122). Many of these men had been eager for the fight, actively hoping to face death right up until the moment they encountered it and saw the reality of the battlefield with their own eyes (3:143). They carried the memory of how God had helped them achieve victory at Badr when they were vastly outmatched and weak (3:123), yet the outcome of this new day would hinge entirely on their obedience.
Why did the believers lose their advantage?
The engagement began exactly as God had promised, with the believers successfully routing the enemy forces. The tide only turned against them when they faltered, disputed their explicit orders, and chose to disobey right as their military goal was in plain sight (3:152). A sudden fracture in their underlying motives caused the collapse: while some men continued to fight solely for the world to come, others broke ranks because they desired the material gains of this world. As a direct punishment for this shift in intention, God intervened and prevented them from defeating their opponents. Chaos rapidly overtook the believers. Men fled the field in complete panic, refusing to look back even as the Messenger stood his ground behind them, desperately calling out for them to return (3:153).
How did God respond to the defeat?
The devastation of the retreat brought intense grief, which God met by rewarding the believers with "sorrow for sorrow." This compounding of hardship was carefully measured to cure them of endlessly grieving over the decisive victory they had missed, as well as the physical trauma they had just sustained (3:153). Once the initial terror passed, God caused a profound calm to descend upon the exhausted ranks in the form of a heavy sleep that overtook a portion of the men. However, another faction remained starkly awake, consumed entirely by self-interest and entertaining false, pagan thoughts about God's control over the events (3:154). Despite the outright disobedience and the fractured intentions that caused the sudden rout, God explicitly stated that He had forgiven the believers, demonstrating His enduring grace toward them (3:152).
What does the Quran say about those killed in battle?
The staggering loss of life on the day the two armies met happened with God’s explicit permission, serving as a decisive mechanism to separate the true believers from the hypocrites (3:166). In the aftermath, those who cared only for themselves began to whisper in secret. They questioned if they had any real agency in the disaster, concealing thoughts they refused to speak aloud to the Prophet: "If we had had our say in this, none of us would have been killed here" (3:154).
The Quran commands the Prophet to shatter this illusion by declaring that every aspect of the affair remains in God's hands. The time and place of death are entirely fixed. Even if these soldiers had resolved to stay safely locked inside their homes, those who were destined to be killed would have still marched out on their own feet to meet their deaths at those exact coordinates. The entire sequence of initial victory, disobedience, and bitter defeat was engineered to test everything within the men, ultimately proving what was buried in their hearts (3:154).

وَإِذْ غَدَوْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ تُبَوِّئُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَقَـٰعِدَ لِلْقِتَالِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
[Prophet], remember when you left your home at dawn to assign battle positions to the believers: God hears and knows everything.
إِذْ هَمَّت طَّآئِفَتَانِ مِنكُمْ أَن تَفْشَلَا وَٱللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا ۗ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
Remember when two groups of you were about to lose heart and God protected them- let the believers put their trust in God-
وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ ۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
God helped you at Badr when you were very weak. Be mindful of God, so that you may be grateful.
وَلَقَدْ كُنتُمْ تَمَنَّوْنَ ٱلْمَوْتَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَلْقَوْهُ فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ
Before you encountered death, you were hoping for it. Well, now you have seen it with your own eyes.
وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَعْدَهُۥٓ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُم بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَـٰزَعْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَآ أَرَىٰكُم مَّا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ مِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ ۖ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
God fulfilled His promise to you: you were routing them, with His permission, but then you faltered, disputed the order, and disobeyed, once He had brought you within sight of your goal- some of you desire the gains of this world and others desire the world to come- and then He prevented you from [defeating] them as a punishment. He has now forgiven you: God is most gracious to the believers.
۞ إِذْ تُصْعِدُونَ وَلَا تَلْوُۥنَ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍ وَٱلرَّسُولُ يَدْعُوكُمْ فِىٓ أُخْرَىٰكُمْ فَأَثَـٰبَكُمْ غَمًّۢا بِغَمٍّ لِّكَيْلَا تَحْزَنُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَاتَكُمْ وَلَا مَآ أَصَـٰبَكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
You fled without looking back while the Messenger was calling out to you from behind, and God rewarded you with sorrow for sorrow. [He has now forgiven you] so that you may not grieve for what you missed or for what happened to you. God is well aware of everything you do.
ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ عَلَيْكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ٱلْغَمِّ أَمَنَةً نُّعَاسًا يَغْشَىٰ طَآئِفَةً مِّنكُمْ ۖ وَطَآئِفَةٌ قَدْ أَهَمَّتْهُمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ يَظُنُّونَ بِٱللَّهِ غَيْرَ ٱلْحَقِّ ظَنَّ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِيَّةِ ۖ يَقُولُونَ هَل لَّنَا مِنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَمْرَ كُلَّهُۥ لِلَّهِ ۗ يُخْفُونَ فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِم مَّا لَا يُبْدُونَ لَكَ ۖ يَقُولُونَ لَوْ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ شَىْءٌ مَّا قُتِلْنَا هَـٰهُنَا ۗ قُل لَّوْ كُنتُمْ فِى بُيُوتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ ٱلَّذِينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَتْلُ إِلَىٰ مَضَاجِعِهِمْ ۖ وَلِيَبْتَلِىَ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِى صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ
After sorrow, He caused calm to descend upon you, a sleep that overtook some of you. Another group, caring only for themselves, entertained false thoughts about God, thoughts more appropriate to pagan ignorance, and said, ‘Do we get a say in any of this?’ [Prophet], tell them, ‘Everything to do with this affair is in God’s hands.’ They conceal in their hearts things they will not reveal to you. They say, ‘If we had had our say in this, none of us would have been killed here.’ Tell them, ‘Even if you had resolved to stay at home, those who were destined to be killed would still have gone out to meet their deaths.’ God did this in order to test everything within you and in order to prove what is in your hearts. God knows your innermost thoughts very well.
وَمَآ أَصَـٰبَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْتَقَى ٱلْجَمْعَانِ فَبِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
what befell you on the day the two armies met in battle happened with God’s permission and in order for Him to see who were the true believers and who were the hypocrites who,
