Banu An-Naḍîr

The expulsion of the Banu An-Naḍîr unfolded in a manner neither the believers nor the exiled group had anticipated. Entrenched within their walls, this faction of the People of the Book believed their physical fortifications made them untouchable. Yet, their removal at the "first gathering of forces" was driven not by an overwhelming military assault, but by a sudden, unseen panic. God came upon them from the exact angle they least expected, placing a paralyzing fear directly into their hearts (59:2). Their fortress effectively fell from the inside out, ending with the startling image of their homes being actively dismantled and destroyed by their own hands, alongside the hands of the believers.

Why was exile decreed for them?

The root cause of their sudden removal was deliberate treachery and opposition to God and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The verses emphasize that they were a people who "broke faith" and firmly set themselves against divine authority (59:2, 59:4). Because of this direct defiance, they faced a stern response from God, who is severe in punishment toward anyone who adopts such a stance.

However, their banishment was framed as a decreed earthly consequence that actually replaced an even heavier penalty. If God had not explicitly ordained exile for them, He would have subjected them to a much more severe torment in this present world. While this expulsion spared them worse immediate destruction on earth, it did not erase their ultimate accountability; they still face the torment of the Fire in the Hereafter (59:3).

How did the believers secure victory without a battle?

Because of the sheer panic placed into the hearts of those who broke faith, the confrontation was resolved without a massive armed clash. The believers did not even have to spur their horses or urge on their camels into battle to secure the outcome (59:6). The military gains were turned over to the Messenger without a traditional cavalry charge or prolonged combat. This lack of conventional warfare underscored a core doctrine regarding belief in the Prophet ﷺ: God directly grants authority to His messengers over whomever He wills, possessing absolute power over all things.

During the standoff, the believers made strategic choices regarding the surrounding environment, specifically the opposing forces' palm trees. Some of these trees were actively cut down, while others were left standing on their roots. Whatever choice the believers made regarding this vegetation was entirely by God’s leave. This environmental tactic was not arbitrary destruction, but a permitted action serving a highly specific psychological purpose: to humiliate and disgrace those who had chosen to defy Him (59:5).

The swift dismantling of a heavily fortified opponent stands as a stark demonstration of where true power actually lies. Defenses of stone and wood offered absolutely no protection when fear itself breached the walls. Stripped of their false security, their own hands tore down the very shelters they once trusted, leaving behind a strict imperative for anyone witnessing their ruins: "Learn from this, all of you with insight!" (59:2).
