Distinction

As Abu Ali observes in his grammatical questions, the term Furqan operates not merely as a proper noun but as an active adjective meaning "the one that distinguishes" (al-Tafsir al-Basit, 16/401). Across its verses, the Quran employs this concept of a distinction or criterion to describe the precise mechanism by which God separates truth from falsehood. It is not presented as a new phenomenon in the final revelation, but rather as the defining characteristic of divine scripture throughout history, sent step by step to clarify the boundaries of human conduct.

The Shared Standard of the Prophets

The granting of this distinction is a recurring milestone in the history of prophethood. God reminds the children of Israel of the time Moses was given the Scripture and the means to distinguish right from wrong so that they might be guided (2:53). This was not a solitary transmission; it was shared with Aaron, given to them both as a "light and a reminder for those who are mindful of God" (21:48). The grammarian al-Farra notes that in this phrasing, "light" serves as a direct attribute of the Furqan itself, meaning they were granted the distinction specifically as an illuminating force (Ma'ani al-Quran, 2/205). The Quran situates the final revelation within this exact sequence. God declares that He sent down the Scripture with the Truth, confirming the Torah and the Gospel that came before as earlier guides, before sending down the final distinction (3:3-4). Reflecting this continuity, Surah al-Furqan—a Makkan chapter of 77 verses (Tafsir Muqatil bin Sulayman, 3/223)—opens by exalting God for sending down this Differentiator to His servant (25:1).

A Personal Criterion

While the distinction exists objectively as scripture, the Quran also promises it as an internal faculty granted to individual believers. The possession of this standard is tied directly to a person's spiritual state. God addresses the believers, stating that if they remain mindful of Him, He will give them a criterion to tell right from wrong (8:29). This personal attainment of the Furqan carries immediate consequences for the believer's standing before God. The verse links the granting of this internal criterion to the wiping out of bad deeds and the granting of forgiveness, characterizing it as a manifestation of God's great favor (8:29).

Events of Separation

The concept of Furqan extends beyond textual law and internal intuition to encompass decisive physical events where truth and falsehood are separated by divine decree. Early exegetes noted that the term applies to historical victories that unmistakably divide the righteous from their opponents. As recorded by Ibn Wahb, the "day of distinction" mentioned in the Quran refers specifically to the day of Badr, when the two armies met and the division between belief and rejection was made material (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 2/352).

As both a historical scripture and an active standard of separation, the distinction serves primarily to warn and hold humanity accountable. The Differentiator was sent down to the Prophet specifically so that it may be a warning to all people (25:1). Because the separation between right and wrong has been made entirely clear through these successive revelations, the consequences for ignoring it are absolute. Those who deny God’s revelations after the distinction has arrived will suffer severe torment, for God is almighty and capable of retribution (3:4).
