When the Quran recounts the ancient pledge taken from the Children of Israel, the command to worship God alone is immediately followed by the duty to be good to parents (2:83). This pairing establishes a baseline for how familial bonds are weighed in revelation. While familial devotion is central, the text maintains a strict theological boundary: wealth and children will not avail anyone against God (3:10, 3:116), and the Creator Himself is transcendent above having offspring (2:116). Yet, within human relationships, the rights of parents are woven deeply into both the spiritual obligations and the financial laws of the community. Abu Bakr al-Haddad emphasizes the spiritual gravity of this relationship, noting the prophetic tradition that God's pleasure is aligned with the pleasure of the parents, just as His anger is tied to their anger (Tafsir al-Haddad, 4/106).

Where should charity and spending begin? When the early Muslims asked the Prophet what they should give in charity, the revelation directed their wealth inward before it went outward. The Quran lists parents first, followed by close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers (2:215). As al-Wahidi points out (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 4/130), anyone intending to spend for the sake of God must prioritize their parents and immediate family. This financial duty extended even to the end of life. Before the fixed inheritance shares were revealed, believers were explicitly instructed to make a proper bequest providing for parents and close relatives, a duty incumbent upon those mindful of God (2:180).

Care and boundaries in raising children The Quran defines parenting not just as an emotional bond, but as a system of mutual, regulated rights where neither the mother nor the father should face unfair hardship. Mothers are given the option to nurse their infants for two whole years, while the financial maintenance and clothing of the mother fall to the father in a fair manner (2:233). This arrangement is protected by a strict boundary: no mother or father should be made to suffer harm on account of their child. If the parents decide by mutual consent and consultation to wean the infant early, or to hire a wet nurse with fair payment, they incur no blame (2:233). Goodness to parents, as Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri explains (Aysar al-Tafasir, 1/477), requires obeying them in what is right, actively doing them favors, and warding off any harm from them.

Fixed shares in inheritance When a family member passes away, the Quran assigns specific, non-negotiable shares of the estate to both men and women from what their parents and relatives leave behind, regardless of whether the total legacy is small or large (4:7). If a deceased person leaves behind children, each of their surviving parents automatically inherits a sixth of the estate (4:11). If there are no children and the parents are the sole heirs, the mother receives a third—which is reduced to a sixth if the deceased leaves brothers. These distributions govern all wealth left behind (4:33), overriding personal preference once debts and prior bequests are settled.

The sheer weight of these obligations places the treatment of a mother and father among the highest acts of devotion a person can perform. Classical commentators like Ibn Kathir (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/474) highlight that the prophetic tradition ranks goodness to parents immediately after offering prayers on time, placing it even before physical struggle in the path of God. The exact financial divisions and the strict commands to care for parents are ultimately tied to human limitations in judging who truly serves our worldly and eternal interests. As the verse establishing their fixed inheritance declares, you cannot know which of your parents or your children is more beneficial to you (4:11).

2:83 Al-Baqarah

Remember when We took a pledge from the Children of Israel: ‘Worship none but God; be good to your parents and kinsfolk, to orphans and the poor; speak good words to all people; keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms.’ Then all but a few of you turned away and paid no heed.

2:116 Al-Baqarah

They have asserted, ‘God has a child.’ May He be exalted! No! Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, everything devoutly obeys His will.

2:180 Al-Baqarah

it is prescribed that he should make a proper bequest to parents and close relatives- a duty incumbent on those who are mindful of God.

2:215 Al-Baqarah

They ask you [Prophet] what they should give. Say, ‘Whatever you give should be for parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. God is well aware of whatever good you do.

2:233 Al-Baqarah

Mothers suckle their children for two whole years, if they wish to complete the term, and clothing and maintenance must be borne by the father in a fair manner. No one should be burdened with more than they can bear: no mother shall be made to suffer harm on account of her child, nor any father on account of his. The same duty is incumbent on the father’s heir. If, by mutual consent and consultation, the couple wish to wean [the child], they will not be blamed, nor will there be any blame if you wish to engage a wet nurse, provided you pay as agreed in a fair manner. Be mindful of God, knowing that He sees everything you do.

3:10 Ali 'Imran

Neither their possessions nor their children will be any use to the disbelievers against God. The disbelievers will be fuel for the Fire,

3:47 Ali 'Imran

She said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a son when no man has touched me?’ [The angel] said, ‘This is how God creates what He will: when He has ordained something, He only says, “Be”, and it is.

3:116 Ali 'Imran

As for those who disbelieve, neither their possessions nor their children will help them against God- they will be companions in the Fire, there to remain-

4:7 An-Nisa

Men shall have a share in what their parents and closest relatives leave, and women shall have a share in what their parents and closest relatives leave, whether the legacy be small or large: this is ordained by God.

4:11 An-Nisa

Concerning your children, God commands you that a son should have the equivalent share of two daughters. If there are only daughters, two or more should share two-thirds of the inheritance, if one, she should have half. Parents inherit a sixth each if the deceased leaves children; if he leaves no children and his parents are his sole heirs, his mother has a third, unless he has brothers, in which case she has a sixth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. You cannot know which of your parents or your children is more beneficial to you: this is a law from God, and He is all knowing, all wise.

4:12 An-Nisa

You inherit half of what your wives leave, if they have no children; if they have children, you inherit a quarter. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If you have no children, your wives’ share is a quarter; if you have children, your wives get an eighth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If a man or a woman dies leaving no children or parents, but a single brother or sister, he or she should take one-sixth of the inheritance; if there are more siblings, they share one-third between them. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts, with no harm done to anyone: this is a commandment from God: God is all knowing and benign to all.

4:33 An-Nisa

We have appointed heirs for everything that parents and close relatives leave behind, including those to whom you have pledged your hands [in marriage], so give them their share: God is witness to everything.

4:36 An-Nisa

Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,

4:75 An-Nisa

Why should you not fight in God’s cause and for those oppressed men, women, and children who cry out, ‘Lord, rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors! By Your grace, give us a protector and give us a helper!’?

4:98 An-Nisa

but not so the truly helpless men, women, and children who have no means in their power nor any way to leave-

4:127 An-Nisa

They ask you [Prophet] for a ruling about women. Say, ‘God Himself gives you a ruling about them. You already have what has been recited to you in the Scripture about orphan girls [in your charge] from whom you withhold the prescribed shares [of their inheritance] and whom you wish to marry, and also about helpless children- God instructs you to treat orphans fairly: He is well aware of whatever good you do.’

4:171 An-Nisa

People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion, and do not say anything about God except the truth: the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was nothing more than a messenger of God, His word, directed to Mary, a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers and do not speak of a ‘Trinity’- stop [this], that is better for you- God is only one God, He is far above having a son, everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him and He is the best one to trust.

4:176 An-Nisa

They ask you [Prophet] for a ruling. Say, ‘God gives you a ruling about inheritance from someone who dies childless with no surviving parents. If a man leaves a sister, she is entitled to half of the inheritance; if she has no child her brother is her sole heir; if there are two sisters, they are entitled to two-thirds of the inheritance between them, but if there are surviving brothers and sisters, the male is entitled to twice the share of the female. God makes this clear to you so that you do not make mistakes: He has full knowledge of everything.’

5:110 Al-Ma'idah

Then God will say, ‘Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour to you and to your mother: how I strengthened you with the holy spirit, so that you spoke to people in your infancy and as a grown man; how I taught you the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; how, by My leave, you fashioned the shape of a bird out of clay, breathed into it, and it became, by My leave, a bird; how, by My leave, you healed the blind person and the leper; how, by My leave, you brought the dead back to life; how I restrained the Children of Israel from [harming] you when you brought them clear signs, and those of them who disbelieved said, “This is clearly nothing but sorcery”;

6:101 Al-An'am

the Creator of the heavens and earth! How could He have children when He has no spouse, when He created all things, and has full knowledge of all things?

6:137 Al-An'am

In the same way, their idols have induced many of the pagans to kill their own children, bringing them ruin and confusion in their faith: if God had willed otherwise they would not have done this, so [Prophet] leave them to their own devices.

6:140 Al-An'am

Lost indeed are those who kill their own children out of folly, with no basis in knowledge, forbidding what God has provided for them, fabricating lies against Him: they have gone far astray and have heeded no guidance.

6:151 Al-An'am

Say, ‘Come! I will tell you what your Lord has really forbidden you. Do not ascribe anything as a partner to Him; be good to your parents; do not kill your children in fear of poverty’- We will provide for you and for them- ‘ stay well away from committing obscenities, whether openly or in secret; do not take the life God has made sacred, except by right. This is what He commands you to do: perhaps you will use your reason.

8:28 Al-Anfal

Be aware that your possessions and your children are only a test, and that there is a tremendous reward with God.

9:55 At-Tawbah

So [Prophet] do not let their possessions or their children impress you: through these God intends to punish them in this world and for their souls to depart while they disbelieve.

9:69 At-Tawbah

‘You are like those who lived before you: they were even stronger than you, with more wealth and children; they enjoyed their share in this life as you have enjoyed yours; like them, you have indulged in idle talk.’ Their deeds go to waste in this world and the next; it is they who will lose all in the life to come.

9:85 At-Tawbah

Do not let their possessions and their children impress you: God means to punish them through these in this world, and that their souls should depart while they disbelieve.

10:68 Yunus

They say, ‘God has children!’ May He be exalted! He is the Self-Sufficient One; everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. You have no authority to say this. How dare you say things about God without any knowledge?

11:72 Hud

She said, ‘Alas for me! How am I to bear a child when I am an old woman, and my husband here is an old man? That would be a strange thing!’

12:21 Yusuf

The Egyptian who bought him said to his wife, ‘Look after him well! He may be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son.’ In this way We settled Joseph in that land and later taught him how to interpret dreams: God always prevails in His purpose, though most people do not realize it.

17:23 Al-Isra

Your Lord has commanded that you should worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say no word that shows impatience with them, and do not be harsh with them, but speak to them respectfully

17:31 Al-Isra

Do not kill your children for fear of poverty––We shall provide for them and for you––killing them is a great sin.

17:64 Al-Isra

Rouse whichever of them you can with your voice, muster your cavalry and infantry against them, share their wealth and their children with them, and make promises to them- Satan promises them nothing but delusion-

17:111 Al-Isra

and say, ‘Praise belongs to God, who has no child nor partner in His rule. He is not so weak as to need a protector. Proclaim His limitless greatness!’

18:4 Al-Kahf

It warns those people who assert, ‘God has offspring.’

18:39 Al-Kahf

If only, when you entered your garden, you had said, “This is God’s will. There is no power not [given] by God.” Although you see I have less wealth and offspring than you,

19:14 Maryam

kind to his parents, not domineering or rebellious.

19:15 Maryam

Peace was on him the day he was born, the day he died, and it will be on him the day he is raised to life again.

19:32 Maryam

to cherish my mother. He did not make me domineering or graceless.

19:33 Maryam

Peace was on me the day I was born, and will be on me the day I die and the day I am raised to life again.’

19:35 Maryam

it would not befit God to have a child. He is far above that: when He decrees something, He says only, ‘Be,’ and it is.

19:77 Maryam

Have you considered the man who rejects Our revelation, who says, ‘I will certainly be given wealth and children’?

19:88 Maryam

The disbelievers say, ‘The Lord of Mercy has offspring.’

19:91 Maryam

that they attribute offspring to the Lord of Mercy.

19:92 Maryam

It does not befit the Lord of Mercy [to have offspring]:

21:26 Al-Anbya

And they say, ‘The Lord of Mercy has taken offspring for Himself.’ May He be exalted! No! They are only His honoured servants:

23:91 Al-Mu'minun

God has never had a child. Nor is there any god beside Him- if there were, each god would have taken his creation aside and tried to overcome the others. May God be exalted above what they describe!

25:2 Al-Furqan

It is He who has control over the heavens and earth and has no offspring––no one shares control with Him––and who created all things and made them to an exact measure.

26:18 Ash-Shu'ara

Pharaoh said, ‘Did we not bring you up as a child among us? Did you not stay with us for many years?

28:9 Al-Qasas

and Pharaoh’s wife said, ‘Here is a joy to behold for me and for you! Do not kill him: he may be of use to us, or we may adopt him as a son.’ They did not realize what they were doing.
