A man spots a fire in the distance and instructs his people to stay behind while he investigates. His immediate priorities are practical: he hopes to bring back a flaming brand, or perhaps find someone at the fire who can offer guidance (20:10). But this isolated search for physical light introduces the story of Moses as a chosen prophet (20:9). What begins as a mundane effort to secure an ember quickly turns into a direct divine summons.
What happened when Moses reached the fire?
When Moses approaches the flames, the expectation of finding another traveler vanishes. He is summoned by his own name—‘Moses!’ (20:11)—and met with the absolute declaration, ‘I am your Lord’ (20:12). Before any further instruction is given, God establishes a boundary of physical reverence. He commands Moses to remove his shoes, identifying the very ground beneath him as the sacred valley of Tuwa (20:12). In this isolated location, the trajectory of Moses' life permanently shifts. God tells him plainly, ‘I have chosen you, so listen to what is being revealed’ (20:13). The traveler who walked toward the light looking for a spark of warmth is commanded to stand still and receive a prophetic mandate.
What were the first words revealed to Moses?
The first instruction given in the sacred valley establishes the absolute core of faith. God states, ‘I am God; there is no god but Me’ (20:14). This declaration of strict monotheism is immediately tied to physical action and mental focus. Moses is commanded to worship God and to keep up the prayer specifically ‘so that you remember Me’ (20:14).
The revelation then turns to the ultimate horizon of human existence: the hereafter. God confirms that the Hour is inevitably coming, ensuring a time when each soul will be rewarded for its own labour (20:15). However, God explicitly states that He chooses to keep the exact timing of this Hour hidden (20:15). Because this reality is unseen, it requires vigilance. God warns Moses not to let anyone who disbelieves in the Hour and follows his own desires distract him, cautioning that yielding to such influence will bring him to ruin (20:16).
Why did God ask Moses about his staff?
Following the weight of these eternal truths, the dialogue scales down to a single, ordinary object. God asks, ‘Moses, what is that in your right hand?’ (20:17). Rather than a brief answer, Moses provides a detailed catalogue of his daily pastoral life. He replies, ‘It is my staff... I lean on it; restrain my sheep with it; I also have other uses for it’ (20:18). He identifies it as a dead piece of wood, fully comprehended and mastered through years of routine use.
God responds with a single command: ‘Throw it down, Moses’ (20:19). Moses complies, casting away the very tool he just described relying upon. The moment the dry wood leaves his grip and strikes the ground, its familiar nature vanishes, instantly transforming into a fast-moving snake (20:20).

وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ
Has the story of Moses come to you [Prophet]?
إِذْ رَءَا نَارًا فَقَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ ٱمْكُثُوٓا۟ إِنِّىٓ ءَانَسْتُ نَارًا لَّعَلِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم مِّنْهَا بِقَبَسٍ أَوْ أَجِدُ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ هُدًى
He saw a fire and said to his people, ‘Stay here––I can see a fire. Maybe I can bring you a flaming brand from it or find some guidance there.’
فَلَمَّآ أَتَىٰهَا نُودِىَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ
When he came to the fire, he was summoned, ‘Moses!
إِنِّىٓ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكَ فَٱخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ ۖ إِنَّكَ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى
I am your Lord. Take off your shoes: you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
وَأَنَا ٱخْتَرْتُكَ فَٱسْتَمِعْ لِمَا يُوحَىٰٓ
I have chosen you, so listen to what is being revealed.
إِنَّنِىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱعْبُدْنِى وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِىٓ
I am God; there is no god but Me. So worship Me and keep up the prayer so that you remember Me.
إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ ءَاتِيَةٌ أَكَادُ أُخْفِيهَا لِتُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا تَسْعَىٰ
The Hour is coming––though I choose to keep it hidden––for each soul to be rewarded for its labour.
فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنْهَا مَن لَّا يُؤْمِنُ بِهَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ فَتَرْدَىٰ
Do not let anyone who does not believe in it and follows his own desires distract you from it, and so bring you to ruin.’
وَمَا تِلْكَ بِيَمِينِكَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
‘Moses, what is that in your right hand?’
قَالَ هِىَ عَصَاىَ أَتَوَكَّؤُا۟ عَلَيْهَا وَأَهُشُّ بِهَا عَلَىٰ غَنَمِى وَلِىَ فِيهَا مَـَٔارِبُ أُخْرَىٰ
‘It is my staff,’ he said, ‘I lean on it; restrain my sheep with it; I also have other uses for it.’
قَالَ أَلْقِهَا يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
God said, ‘Throw it down, Moses.’
فَأَلْقَىٰهَا فَإِذَا هِىَ حَيَّةٌ تَسْعَىٰ
He threw it down and- lo and behold!- it became a fast-moving snake.
قَالَ خُذْهَا وَلَا تَخَفْ ۖ سَنُعِيدُهَا سِيرَتَهَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ
He said, ‘Pick it up without fear: We shall turn it back into its former state.
وَٱضْمُمْ يَدَكَ إِلَىٰ جَنَاحِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَآءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوٓءٍ ءَايَةً أُخْرَىٰ
Now place your hand under your armpit and it will come out white, though unharmed: that is another sign.
لِنُرِيَكَ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا ٱلْكُبْرَى
We do this to show you some of Our greatest signs.
ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ
Go to Pharaoh, for he has truly become a tyrant.’
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱشْرَحْ لِى صَدْرِى
Moses said, ‘Lord, lift up my heart
وَيَسِّرْ لِىٓ أَمْرِى
and ease my task for me.
وَٱحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِى
Untie my tongue,
يَفْقَهُوا۟ قَوْلِى
so that they may understand my words,
وَٱجْعَل لِّى وَزِيرًا مِّنْ أَهْلِى
and give me a helper from my family,
هَـٰرُونَ أَخِى
my brother Aaron-
ٱشْدُدْ بِهِۦٓ أَزْرِى
augment my strength through him.
وَأَشْرِكْهُ فِىٓ أَمْرِى
Let him share my task
كَىْ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَثِيرًا
so that we can glorify You much
وَنَذْكُرَكَ كَثِيرًا
and remember You often:
إِنَّكَ كُنتَ بِنَا بَصِيرًا
You are always watching over us.’
قَالَ قَدْ أُوتِيتَ سُؤْلَكَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
God said, ‘Moses, your request is granted.
