He asks if they finally realize what they did to Joseph and his brother when they were acting out of ignorance (12:89). With this single inquiry, the petitioner and the petitioned trade places, and the brothers recognize the ruler before them is the sibling they discarded years ago.

How does Joseph confirm his identity?

When the stunned brothers cry out, "Could it be that you are Joseph?", he plainly confirms who he is, pointing out the younger brother standing beside him (12:90). Joseph does not use this revelation to gloat over his political dominance. Instead, he credits his survival and current authority entirely to divine grace. He outlines the principle that carried him through his trials: God never denies the reward of anyone who remains mindful of Him and steadfast during adversity (12:90). Staring at the living proof of their victim's triumph, the brothers take an oath by God. They admit without caveat that God favored Joseph over all of them, confessing aloud that they were entirely in the wrong (12:91).

What happens after the brothers confess?
