Traveler
14 verses
To be far from home is to be separated from one’s wealth, family, and social safety net. In its social and economic directives, the text repeatedly elevates the wayfarer from a stranger dependent on random hospitality to a protected individual with fixed rights. The care of the traveler is woven directly into the definition of righteousness, placing their support on the exact same level as daily prayers and belief in the Last Day.
What is a traveler's financial right?
Assistance to those in transit is never treated as a mere suggestion. When asked what should be given in charity, the instruction is to direct wealth to parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers, with the assurance that God is fully aware of whatever good is done (2:215). This demographic is consistently grouped with the most vulnerable members of society. In defining true goodness, the text deliberately pulls focus away from empty ritual. It states that righteousness does not consist simply in turning one's face toward the East or West in prayer; rather, the truly good are those who give cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers (2:177). Worship of God and the prohibition against arrogant boasting are directly paired with the command to be good to these groups, as well as neighbors near and far (4:36).
Is this support mandatory or optional?
Beyond voluntary giving, the wayfarer holds a mandated share in communal funds. Alms are strictly designated for specific categories, including the poor, those in debt, and travelers in need, establishing this as a direct ordinance (9:60). Their rights extend even to state revenues; one-fifth of battle gains is legally apportioned to God, the Messenger, relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers (8:41).
The text frames this not as a favor granted by the wealthy, but as an obligation to restore what already belongs to the recipient. The command is explicitly to give relatives, the needy, and travelers "their due," accompanied by a stern warning not to squander wealth wastefully (17:26). Discharging this exact due is described as the best course for anyone seeking God’s approval, guaranteeing their ultimate prosperity (30:38).
Where else do travelers appear in the text?
People passing through also shape historical narratives and the boundaries of sacred law. When Joseph’s brothers plot against him, one suggests throwing him into the hidden depths of a well specifically so that a passing caravan might pick him up (12:10). Later, travelers do arrive, sending a water-drawer who lets down his bucket and excitedly pulls the boy from the well, hiding him like a piece of merchandise (12:19).
The physical needs of those in transit also prompt specific legal allowances. For instance, while hunting game is strictly forbidden for anyone in the state of consecration for pilgrimage, an exception is made for seafood, permitting it to be caught and eaten as an enjoyment for both the resident and the traveler (5:96).
The condition of the wayfarer strips away the usual markers of status and security, leaving only an immediate human need. Meeting that need is treated not as a favor, but as a defining test of faith. The truly good are those who maintain their pledges, remain steadfast in adversity, and give away the wealth they cherish to those stranded on the road—these are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God (2:177).

Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.
They ask you [Prophet] what they should give. Say, ‘Whatever you give should be for parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. God is well aware of whatever good you do.
Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,
It is permitted for you to catch and eat seafood- an enjoyment for you and the traveller- but hunting game is forbidden while you are in the state of consecration [for pilgrimage]. Be mindful of God to whom you will be gathered.
Know that one-fifth of your battle gains belongs to God and the Messenger, to close relatives and orphans, to the needy and travellers, if you believe in God and the revelation We sent down to Our servant on the day of the decision, the day when the two forces met in battle. God has power over all things.
Alms are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travellers in need. This is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise.
[Another of them] said, ‘Do not kill Joseph, but, if you must, throw him into the hidden depths of a well where some caravan may pick him up.’
Some travellers came by. They sent someone to draw water and he let down his bucket. ‘Good news!’ he exclaimed. ‘Here is a boy!’ They hid him like a piece of merchandise- God was well aware of what they did-
Give relatives their due, and the needy, and travellers- do not squander your wealth wastefully:
So give their due to the near relative, the needy, and the wayfarer- that is best for those whose goal is God’s approval: these are the ones who will prosper.
Consider the fire you kindle-
is it you who make the wood for it grow or We?
We made it a reminder, and useful to those who kindle it,
Whatever gains God has turned over to His Messenger from the inhabitants of the villages belong to God, the Messenger, kinsfolk, orphans, the needy, the traveller in need- this is so that they do not just circulate among those of you who are rich––so accept whatever the Messenger gives you, and abstain from whatever he forbids you. Be mindful of God: God is severe in punishment.
