Quranic theme
justice to a Jew
8 verses
When a guilty party attempts to escape punishment by throwing the blame for a stolen shield onto an innocent Jew, the Quran intervenes with eight sequential verses in Surah An-Nisa (4:105–112) demanding absolute legal impartiality. Rather than protecting the reputation of those who plotted the cover-up, the text publicly dismantles their defense, asserting that the very purpose of the revealed Scripture is to "judge between people in accordance with what God has shown you" (4:105). The verses establish a strict standard for legal justice where religious affiliation offers no shelter for deceit, and the truth of an accusation matters more than the identity of the accused.
Why does God reprimand those advocating for the guilty?
The Quran directly commands the Prophet to reject partisanship, issuing a strict prohibition: "Do not be an advocate for those who betray trust" (4:105). This reprimand swiftly extends to the broader community of believers who had unwittingly taken the side of the guilty party. The text strips away the illusion that legal maneuvering or vocal support in the material world holds any lasting value for the perpetrators.
Those who argue on behalf of the treacherous in this life are challenged to look past the immediate trial and consider the inevitable aftermath: "who will argue on their behalf with God on the Day of Resurrection? Who will be their defender?" (4:109). Defending a cover-up is framed not merely as a social misstep or an error in judgment, but as an act of self-destruction. The text warns the community not to argue for those who "betray their own souls," making it unequivocally clear that God "does not love anyone given to treachery and sin" (4:107).
What is the spiritual cost of framing an innocent person?
The individuals responsible for the theft believed their secret was secure because they conspired in the dark, successfully hiding their true actions from the public. The Quran shatters this false sense of security by mapping out the exact limits of their secrecy. They may hide from people, but they cannot hide from God, who is acutely present "when they plot at night, saying things that do not please Him" (4:108). God remains fully aware of every fabricated detail.
The text isolates the act of framing an innocent non-Muslim as a distinct and compounded crime. When a person commits an offense or a sin and then deliberately shifts the blame to someone guiltless, they do not actually shed their culpability. Instead, they actively weigh themselves down with "deceit as well as flagrant sin" (4:112). The verses reinforce that the damage of such calculated injustice is entirely internal, stating as a matter of doctrine that whoever commits a sin ultimately "does so against his own soul" (4:111).
Despite the severity of the betrayal and the public exposure of the nighttime conspiracy, the verses maintain that those involved can still repair the fracture they caused. The text instructs the Prophet himself to ask for forgiveness (4:106) and establishes a permanent rule for the perpetrators: anyone who does evil or wrongs their own soul, and then genuinely asks God for forgiveness, will find Him "most forgiving and merciful" (4:110). Without seeking that pardon, the conspirators remain burdened with their deceit, destined for a final judgment where no earthly advocate can step forward to defend them.

We have sent down the Scripture to you [Prophet] with the truth so that you can judge between people in accordance with what God has shown you. Do not be an advocate for those who betray trust.

They try to hide themselves from people, but they cannot hide from God. He is with them when they plot at night, saying things that do not please Him: He is fully aware of everything they do.

Yet anyone who does evil or wrongs his own soul and then asks God for forgiveness will find Him most forgiving and merciful.
He who commits sin does so against his own soul- God is all knowing and wise-
and anyone who commits an offence or a sin, and then throws the blame on to some innocent person, has burdened himself with deceit as well as flagrant sin.
