Before his father was even born, the prophet Jacob (يعقوب) was promised to his grandparents as an "additional gift" (21:72) from God. When Abraham's wife stood nearby and laughed at the news of having a child in her old age, she was immediately given the good news of Isaac, and after him, Jacob (11:71). As Ibn Kathir notes (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/647), this glad tiding meant Abraham and Sarah knew their lineage would continue, promising them not just a son, but a grandson. He was born into a legacy of revelation, stepping into a chain of chosen men that God guided to establish monotheism.
How does the Quran describe Jacob's prophethood?
When Abraham abandoned his people and the idols they worshipped, God compensated him by granting him Isaac and Jacob, elevating both to prophethood (19:49). The Quran establishes Jacob as a recipient of divine revelation in the exact same manner as Noah, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (4:163). God declares that He guided Jacob and made him righteous, blessing him and his household with a "noble reputation" (19:50).
The Quran instructs Muslims to explicitly declare their belief in the revelation given to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, making no distinction between any of God's messengers (3:84). He is counted among the elite group of prophets from the seed of Abraham and Israel who possessed a deep, emotional connection to the divine word.
What is Jacob's role in the story of Joseph?
Jacob's life is most visibly detailed in the Quran through the trials of his son, Joseph. He was the patriarch of a large family—al-Tabari records the names of his eldest son Rubil, alongside Sham'un, Lawi, Yahudha, Ribalon, Yashjur, and a daughter, Dinah (Jami al-bayan, 3/112). These sons would form the ancestral roots of the Tribes of Israel.
Throughout the decades of separation from Joseph, the Quran highlights Jacob's profound, God-given understanding. Even when he gave his sons specific instructions upon entering a city to request grain, the Quran clarifies this did not alter God's will, but merely satisfied a wish within Jacob, noting explicitly that "He knew well what We had taught him, though most people do not" (12:68). This religious grounding passed directly to Joseph, who later declared in an Egyptian prison that he followed the faith of his forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, refusing to worship anything besides God (12:38).
Who are the heirs of Jacob?
The spiritual and prophetic legacy of Jacob carried immense weight for the generations that followed. His descendants formed a continuous line of prophets who carried the scripture to their people. The Quran lists David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron among his guided descendants (6:84), along with Zachariah, John, Jesus, and Elijah, noting that every one of them was righteous (6:85).
The spiritual inheritance of his household was so revered that centuries later, the prophet Zachariah specifically prayed for a son who would be his own heir and "the heir of the family of Jacob," asking God to make this successor well-pleasing (19:6).
Jacob stands as a central pillar in the lineage of monotheism, rewarded for the sacrifices of his grandfather and carrying the burden of prophethood forward. He preserved the belief in one God through the severe trials of his own household, emerging as a man of immense patience and knowledge. Among the prophets blessed by God from the seed of Abraham, he belonged to those who, when the revelations of the Lord of Mercy were recited to them, fell to their knees and wept (19:58).

قُلْ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ وَمَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَٱلنَّبِيُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ مُسْلِمُونَ
Say [Muhammad], ‘We [Muslims] believe in God and in what has been sent down to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes. We believe in what has been given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We do not make a distinction between any of the [prophets]. It is to Him that we devote ourselves.’
۞ إِنَّآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ كَمَآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ نُوحٍ وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ وَعِيسَىٰ وَأَيُّوبَ وَيُونُسَ وَهَـٰرُونَ وَسُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۚ وَءَاتَيْنَا دَاوُۥدَ زَبُورًا
We have sent revelation to you [Prophet] as We did to Noah and the prophets after him, to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon- to David We gave the book [of Psalms]-
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ كُلًّا هَدَيْنَا ۚ وَنُوحًا هَدَيْنَا مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِۦ دَاوُۥدَ وَسُلَيْمَـٰنَ وَأَيُّوبَ وَيُوسُفَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
We gave him Isaac and Jacob, each of whom We guided, as We had guided Noah before, and among his descendants were David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron- in this way We reward those who do good-
وَزَكَرِيَّا وَيَحْيَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَإِلْيَاسَ ۖ كُلٌّ مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
Zachariah, John, Jesus, and Elijah- every one of them was righteous-
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ قَآئِمَةٌ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهَا بِإِسْحَـٰقَ وَمِن وَرَآءِ إِسْحَـٰقَ يَعْقُوبَ
His wife was standing [nearby] and laughed. We gave her good news of Isaac and, after him, of Jacob.
وَٱتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشْرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ
and I follow the faith of my forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Because of God’s grace to us and to all mankind, we would never worship anything beside God, but most people are ungrateful.
وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةً فِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَا ۚ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
and, when they entered as their father had told them, it did not help them against the will of God, it merely satisfied a wish of Jacob’s. He knew well what We had taught him, though most people do not.
يَرِثُنِى وَيَرِثُ مِنْ ءَالِ يَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَٱجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا
to be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him well pleasing [to You].’
فَلَمَّا ٱعْتَزَلَهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا نَبِيًّا
When he left his people and those they served beside God, We granted him Isaac and Jacob and made them both prophets:
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِنَا وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ عَلِيًّا
We granted Our grace to all of them, and gave them a noble reputation.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ ءَادَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَٱجْتَبَيْنَآ ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ خَرُّوا۟ سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا ۩
These were the prophets God blessed- from the seed of Adam, of those We carried in the Ark with Noah, from the seed of Abraham and Israel- and those We guided and chose. When the revelations of the Lord of Mercy were recited to them, they fell to their knees and wept,
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ نَافِلَةً ۖ وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا صَـٰلِحِينَ
and We gave him Isaac and Jacob as an additional gift, and made each of them righteous.
