Equality
29 verses
When evaluating human deeds, the divine standard operates with absolute precision, promising that anyone who believes and acts righteously will enter Paradise without being wronged by so much as the dip in a date stone (4:124). The text frames human standing not through inherited rank, but through a strict parity of spiritual opportunity. Rather than enforcing a flat uniformity where all things are treated exactly alike, equality functions as identical access to God's reward, paired with a sharp differentiation between truth and falsehood.
Are men and women judged equally?
The verses explicitly guarantee identical spiritual returns for both sexes. God assures believers that He will not allow the deeds of anyone to be lost, stating, "whether you are male or female, each is like the other" (3:195). The requirement for this reward rests uniformly on two pillars: possessing faith and doing good deeds. Whoever meets these conditions is promised a "good life" in this world and a future reward calculated according to the best of their actions (16:97). There is no separate metric for salvation; the promise of Gardens graced with flowing streams belongs to anyone who suffers harm, emigrates, or is killed striving for the divine cause, entirely regardless of gender (3:195).
Where does the text reject equality?
While spiritual opportunity is universally open, the verses frequently insist that fundamentally different states and actions are not equal. Believers are commanded not to liken bad to good, even if the sheer abundance of the bad appears dazzling (5:100). The text uses stark physical contrasts to illustrate spiritual disparities, asking if the blind person is equal to the one who can see, or if the depths of darkness are equal to the light (13:16). A creator is not indistinguishable from what is created, just as those who merely follow revelation are not like those who falsely claim to possess the unseen or the treasures of God (13:16, 6:50).
This principle directly shapes the valuation of human deeds. Tending the Sacred Mosque or giving water to pilgrims cannot be considered equal to believing in the Last Day and actively striving in God’s path; they are not equal in God's eyes (9:19). Even among believers, those who stay at home without a valid incapacity do not stand on equal footing with those who commit their possessions and themselves to striving. God raises the strivers to a rank above, granting them a tremendous reward over those who remain passive, though a good reward is promised to all who believe (4:95). Similarly, a person who commands justice and walks a straight path is never equal to a man who remains a burden to his carer and achieves nothing good (16:76).
How does equality function in restitution?
In matters of penalty, equality is expressed as strict equivalence to the offense. If a person in the state of consecration for pilgrimage intentionally kills game, the penalty is exacted through an equivalent offering. Two just men must judge a domestic animal to be equivalent to the killed game, which is then brought to the Kaba. Alternatively, the offender must feed the needy or fast an equivalent number of days in order to fully taste the gravity of the deed (5:95). As al-Tha'labi notes (Tafsir al-Thalabi, 5/46), the very concept of retribution in such verses is rooted in al-musawawah and al-mumathalah (equality and equivalence), ensuring the consequence precisely matches the act.
Every human action falls under this exacting scale, where neither a false god nor a presumed status can offer protection from disgrace (17:22). The ultimate standing of any individual rests on looking past the dazzling abundance of what is bad, holding to faith and good deeds to secure a reward where not a single effort is lost.

Their Lord has answered them: ‘I will not allow the deeds of any one of you to be lost, whether you are male or female, each is like the other [in rewards]. I will certainly wipe out the bad deeds of those who emigrated and were driven out of their homes, who suffered harm for My cause, who fought and were killed. I will certainly admit them to Gardens graced with flowing streams, as a reward from God: the best reward is with God.’
Those believers who stay at home, apart from those with an incapacity, are not equal to those who commit themselves and their possessions to striving in God’s way. God has raised such people to a rank above those who stay at home- although He has promised all believers a good reward, those who strive are favoured with a tremendous reward above those who stay at home-
anyone, male or female, who does good deeds and is a believer, will enter Paradise and will not be wronged by as much as the dip in a date stone.
You who believe, do not kill game while you are in the state of consecration [for pilgrimage]. If someone does so intentionally the penalty is an offering of a domestic animal brought to the Kaba, equivalent- as judged by two just men among you- to the one he has killed; alternatively, he may atone by feeding the needy or by fasting an equivalent number of days, so that he may taste the full gravity of his deed. God forgives what is past, but if anyone re-offends, God will exact the penalty from him: God is mighty, and capable of exacting the penalty.
Say [Prophet], ‘Bad cannot be likened to good, though you may be dazzled by how abundant the bad is. Be mindful of God, people of understanding, so that you may prosper.’
Say, ‘I do not have the treasures of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.’ Say, ‘Is a blind person like one who can see? Why will you not reflect?’
Do you consider giving water to pilgrims and tending the Sacred Mosque to be equal to the deeds of those who believe in God and the Last Day and who strive in God’s path? They are not equal in God’s eyes. God does not guide such benighted people.
Say [Prophet], ‘Who is Lord of the heavens and the earth?’ Say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Why do you take protectors other than Him, who can neither benefit nor harm even themselves?’ Say, ‘Are the blind equal to those who can see? And are the depths of darkness equal to the light?’ Have the partners they assign to God created anything like His creation so that their creation is indistinguishable from His? Say, ‘God is the Creator of all things: He is the One, the All Compelling.’
God presents another illustration: two men, one of them dumb, unable to do anything, a burden to his carer- whatever task he directs him to, he achieves nothing good- can he be considered equal to one who commands justice and is on the straight path?
To whoever, male or female, does good deeds and has faith, We shall give a good life and reward them according to the best of their actions.
Set up no other god beside God, or you will end up disgraced and forsaken.
In that case, We would have made you taste a double punishment in this life, and a double punishment after death and then you would have found no one to help you against Us.
They replied, ‘It makes no difference to us whether you warn us or not,
So, is someone who believes equal to someone who defies God? No, they are not equal.
The two bodies of water are not alike- one is palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink, the other salty and bitter- yet from each you eat fresh fish and extract ornaments to wear, and in each you see the ships ploughing their course so that you may seek God’s bounty and be grateful.
The blind and the seeing are not alike,
nor are darkness and light;
shade and heat are not alike,
nor are the living and the dead. God makes anyone He wills hear [His message]: you cannot make those in their graves hear.
It is all the same to them whether you warn them or not: they will not believe.
but would We treat those who believe and do good deeds and those who spread corruption on earth as equal? Would We treat those who are aware of God and those who recklessly break all bounds in the same way?
What about someone who worships devoutly during the night, bowing down, standing in prayer, ever mindful of the life to come, hoping for his Lord’s mercy? Say, ‘How can those who know be equal to those who do not know?’ Only those who have understanding will take heed.
Whoever does evil will be repaid with its like; whoever does good and believes, be it a man or a woman, will enter Paradise and be provided for without measure.
The blind and the sighted are not equal, just as those who believe and do good works and those who do evil are not equal: how seldom you reflect!
People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should recognize one another. In God’s eyes, the most honoured of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware.
and set up other gods alongside God. Hurl him into severe punishment!’-
Why should you not give for God’s cause when God alone will inherit what is in the heavens and earth? Those who gave and fought before the triumph are not like others: they are greater in rank than those who gave and fought afterwards. But God has promised a good reward to all of them: God is fully aware of all that you do.
there is no comparison between the inhabitants of the Fire and the inhabitants of Paradise- and the inhabitants of Paradise are the successful ones.
whoever has done an atom’s-weight of good will see it,
