Ascension

8 verses

The human impulse to conquer the sky appears in the Quran both as an arrogant demand for proof and a metaphor for the sheer difficulty of reaching beyond mortal limits. As Ibn Qutaybah observes (Gharib al-Quran, 491), the Arabic term for ascension (sa'ud) is linguistically rooted in the concept of a steep, physically exhausting obstacle. Man seeks to scale the heavens by his own force, demanding visual confirmation of the unseen. Yet the text systematically redirects this attention away from physical altitude, focusing instead on the invisible realities and moral actions that are constantly moving upward toward the Creator.

The Demand for the Sky Opponents of the prophets repeatedly demand physical ascension as a rigid precondition for their faith. They challenge the messenger to ascend into the sky and bring back a tangible book they can read, a demand answered by simply reminding them that a messenger is nothing more than a mortal (17:93). To those who presume authority over the universe and reject divine revelation, the Quran issues a dismissive challenge: if they truly control the heavens and the earth and everything between them, "let them climb their ropes" (38:10).

The text stresses that physical elevation cannot cure a deeply rooted spiritual blindness. Even if God opened a literal gateway into Heaven and these skeptics rose higher and higher through it, their disbelief would remain completely intact (15:14). Sweeping architectural ascents are similarly reduced to mere worldly trinkets. The Quran notes that God could easily furnish the houses of disbelievers with roofs of silver and sweeping silver staircases to ascend. This extreme luxury is withheld only so that such staggering wealth does not cause all of mankind to become a single nation of disbelievers (43:33).

What Actually Rises While humans concern themselves with climbing to achieve dominance or verify miracles, the text redefines what genuinely elevates a person. When addressing those who desire authority, the Quran definitively states that "all power belongs to God" (35:10). True elevation is not achieved by human bodies scaling the sky. Instead, it is "good words" that naturally rise up to Him, and it is God Himself who "lifts up the righteous deed" (35:10). The spiritual ascent requires no physical ropes or silver architecture, only sincere action. Conversely, those who plot evil find no upward movement; a severe torment awaits them, and their plotting will ultimately come to nothing.

The Cosmic Timeline Beyond human deeds, ascension is the fundamental direction of the entire cosmos. God is explicitly named the "Lord of the Ways of Ascent" (70:3). These unseen pathways are actively traversed by the angels and the Spirit, ascending to Him on a Day whose staggering length spans fifty thousand years (70:4). The immense time scales emphasize a reality far larger than the immediate demands of earthly skeptics.

This upward movement of all existence is a fixed conclusion. The effort to climb through one's own arrogance leads only to ruin—a punishment that early scholars like Ibn al-Jawzi described, using the same linguistic root, as an agonizingly steep and inescapable path (Zad al-Masir, 4/363). True ascent belongs entirely to the Divine order, where God runs everything from the heavens to the earth, until everything ascends to Him in the end on a Day measuring a thousand years in human reckoning (32:5).

17:93 Al-Isra

or have a house made of gold; or ascend into the sky- even then, we will not believe in your ascension until you send a real book down for us to read.’ Say, ‘Glory be to my Lord! Am I anything but a mortal, a messenger?’

32:5 As-Sajdah

Do they control the heavens and earth and everything between? Let them climb their ropes:

43:33 Az-Zukhruf

If it were not that all mankind might have become a single nation [of disbelievers], We could have given all those who disbelieve in the Lord of Mercy houses with roofs of silver, sweeping staircases to ascend,

70:3 Al-Ma'arij

from God, the Lord of the Ways of Ascent,

70:4 Al-Ma'arij

by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him, on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years.
