takes his brother Benjamin

14 verses

Before the king’s drinking-cup goes missing, Joseph pulls his brother aside to reveal a secret kept from the rest of the caravan. "I am your brother," he tells him privately, instructing him not to be saddened by their siblings' past actions (12:69). This quiet reunion sets the stage for a public confrontation that will force the older brothers to answer for their history.

How does Joseph legally detain his brother?

Once the brothers' provisions are loaded, Joseph hides a drinking-cup inside his brother's pack (12:70). An announcer suddenly cries out, accusing the caravan of being thieves. When the brothers turn and ask what is missing, they are told the king's cup is gone, with a guaranteed reward of a camel-load of grain for its return (12:71-72).

Swearing by God, the brothers protest that they are not thieves and did not come to the land to make mischief (12:73). The officials press them, asking what the penalty should be if they are caught lying. Unwittingly, the brothers dictate their sibling's fate by answering according to their own customs: the punishment for theft is the enslavement of the person in whose bag the item is found (12:74-75). Joseph begins the inspection, deliberately searching the older brothers' bags first before pulling the cup from his brother’s pack (12:76).

Why was the staged theft necessary?

The Quran specifies that this sequence was a legally necessary maneuver orchestrated from above. Under the Egyptian king's law, Joseph had no authority to detain his brother as a penalty for theft (12:76). However, the brothers' own tradition, which they had just established as the binding rule for this search, allowed the victim to take the thief.

By prompting the brothers to state the penalty themselves, Joseph secures the right to keep his brother close. The text frames this not as Joseph's personal deception, but as a direct intervention: "In this way We devised a plan for Joseph" (12:76). The verse places this tactical success within a broader hierarchy of wisdom, noting that above everyone possessing knowledge is the One who is all-knowing (12:76).

How do the older brothers react to the accusation?

Trapped by their own words, the brothers immediately distance themselves from the accused. They remark, "If he is a thief then his brother was a thief before him," slandering Joseph to his face without realizing his identity (12:77). Joseph keeps his secrets, silently noting that they are in a far worse situation and that God knows the truth of their claims (12:77).

Desperate, they plead with the "mighty governor" to take one of them in his place, citing the heartbreak it will cause their elderly father (12:78). Joseph refuses the offer, stating it would be fundamentally unjust to punish anyone other than the man found with the stolen property (12:79).

Having lost all hope of persuading the governor, the brothers withdraw to confer privately. The eldest among them is paralyzed by the weight of their history. He reminds the others of the solemn pledge their father extracted from them in God's name before they departed, and forces them to recall how they had already failed in their duty regarding Joseph years earlier (12:80). Refusing to face his father's grief a second time, the eldest declares he will not leave Egyptian land until his father grants him permission, or until God decides for him, as He is the best decider (12:80).

12:70 Yusuf

They replied, ‘The king’s drinking-cup is missing,’ and, ‘Whoever returns it will get a camel-load [of grain],’ and, ‘I give you my word.’

12:73 Yusuf

They said, ‘By God! You must know that we did not come to make mischief in your land: we are no thieves.’

12:74 Yusuf

They asked them, ‘And if we find that you are lying, what penalty shall we apply to you?’

12:75 Yusuf

and they answered, ‘The penalty will be [the enslavement of] the person in whose bag the cup is found: this is how we punish wrongdoers.’

12:76 Yusuf

[Joseph] began by searching their bags, then his brother’s, and he pulled it out from his brother’s bag. In this way We devised a plan for Joseph- if God had not willed it so, he could not have detained his brother as a penalty under the king’s law- We raise the rank of whoever We will. Above everyone who has knowledge there is the One who is all knowing.

12:77 Yusuf

[His brothers] said, ‘If he is a thief then his brother was a thief before him,’ but Joseph kept his secrets and did not reveal anything to them. He said, ‘You are in a far worse situation. God knows best the truth of what you claim.’

12:78 Yusuf

He replied, ‘God forbid that we should take anyone other than the person on whom we found our property: that would be unjust of us.’

12:80 Yusuf

When they lost hope of [persuading] him, they withdrew to confer with each other: the eldest of them said, ‘Do you not remember that your father took a solemn pledge from you in the name of God and before that you failed in your duty with regard to Joseph? I will not leave this land until my father gives me leave or God decides for me- He is the best decider-

12:81 Yusuf

so go back to your father and say, “Your son stole. We can only tell you what we saw. How could we guard against the unforeseen?

12:82 Yusuf

Ask in the town where we have been; ask the people of the caravan we travelled with: we are telling the truth.”’
