Slaves

13 verses

Rather than addressing an abstract institution, the Quran regulates the immediate reality of enslaved men and women living within households, treating them as spiritual peers who require bride-gifts, consent, and specific codes of privacy. The text dictates terms for intimacy, commands financial fairness when seeking to marry them, and repeatedly weaves their presence into the daily rituals of family life.

Marrying an enslaved woman

The text provides clear legal avenues for marrying those held in captivity. If a man fears he cannot treat multiple free wives equitably, he is instructed to marry only one, or to marry his slave, as a means to avoid bias (4:3). For a believer who lacks the financial means to marry a free woman, the Quran explicitly permits marrying a believing slave (4:25). This is not an informal arrangement; the marriage requires the direct consent of the woman’s people and the payment of proper bride-gifts. God reminds the believers that He knows the depth of their faith, and socially, "you are [all] part of the same family" (4:25). To protect these women, the Quran insists they be taken as married wives rather than secret lovers, dictating that if they commit adultery while married, their legal punishment is exactly half that of a free woman. Intimacy is strictly regulated, legally restricted to spouses or slaves (23:6), and the Prophet himself receives direct revelation regarding the slaves assigned to him through war, making them lawful to him alongside wives whose bride-gifts he has paid (33:50).

Household privacy and daily treatment

Because slaves lived and worked alongside families, the Quran outlines distinct rules for domestic interaction and modesty. Believing women—including the Prophet's wives—are permitted to relax their modesty rules, such as letting their headscarves fall to reveal their necklines, in front of their own slaves just as they would with their fathers, sons, or brothers (24:31, 33:55). Yet, this physical access is balanced with strict rights to personal privacy. Slaves, along with children who have not yet reached puberty, must ask for permission before entering a room during three specific periods: before the dawn prayer, when garments are laid aside in the midday heat, and after the evening prayer (24:58). Outside of these three designated times of privacy, the text notes there is no blame on anyone for moving around each other freely. Above all household mechanics, the Quran places a firm ethical command on the owner: believers must worship God alone, and be unequivocally good to parents, orphans, travelers, and their slaves, warning that God does not like arrogant or boastful people (4:36).

A metaphor against polytheism

Beyond legal rights and domestic boundaries, the social reality of slavery is leveraged as a theological argument against polytheism. The Quran asks human beings to examine their own hesitation to share their wealth with those they own. It points out that God gives some people more provision than others, yet those given more are unwilling to pass it on to their slaves so that they become financial equals (16:71). Using an example drawn directly from their own lives, God asks the listeners if they make their slaves full partners with an equal share in their wealth, or if they fear them as they fear their social peers (30:28). By highlighting how absurd a master would find it to share equal sovereignty with his slave, the Quran illustrates the irrationality of associating created beings as equal partners with the Creator. The revelation asks how people can refuse to acknowledge God's blessings by assigning Him partners, when they themselves refuse to accept the slaves they possess as equals.

4:3 An-Nisa

If you fear that you will not deal fairly with orphan girls, you may marry whichever [other] women seem good to you, two, three, or four. If you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one, or your slave(s): that is more likely to make you avoid bias.

4:24 An-Nisa

women already married, other than your slaves.God has ordained all this for you. Other women are lawful to you, so long as you seek them in marriage, with gifts from your property, looking for wedlock rather than fornication. If you wish to enjoy women through marriage, give them their bride-gift- this is obligatory- though if you should choose mutually, after fulfilling this obligation, to do otherwise [with the bride-gift], you will not be blamed: God is all knowing and all wise.

4:25 An-Nisa

If any of you does not have the means to marry a believing free woman, then marry a believing slave- God knows best [the depth of] your faith: you are [all] part of the same family- so marry them with their people’s consent and their proper bride-gifts. [Make them] married women, not adulteresses or lovers. If they commit adultery when they are married, their punishment will be half that of free women. This is for those of you who fear that you will sin; it is better for you to practise selfrestraint. God is most forgiving and merciful,

4:36 An-Nisa

Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,

16:71 An-Nahl

God has given some of you more provision than others. Those who have been given more are unwilling to pass their provision on to the slaves they possess so that they become their equals. How can they refuse to acknowledge God’s blessings?

23:6 Al-Mu'minun

except with their spouses or their slaves––with these they are not to blame,

24:31 An-Nur

And tell believing women that they should lower their glances, guard their private parts, and not display their charms beyond what [it is acceptable] to reveal; they should let their headscarves fall to cover their necklines and not reveal their charms except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their womenfolk, their slaves, such men as attend them who have no sexual desire, or children who are not yet aware of women’s nakedness; they should not stamp their feet so as to draw attention to any hidden charms. Believers, all of you, turn to God so that you may prosper.

24:58 An-Nur

Believers, your slaves and any who have not yet reached puberty should ask your permission to come in at three times of day: before the dawn prayer; when you lay your garments aside in the midday heat; and after the evening prayer. These are your three times for privacy; at other times, there is no blame on you or them if you move around each other freely. In this way God makes messages clear: God is all knowing, all wise.

30:28 Ar-Rum

He gives you this example, drawn from your own lives: do you make your slaves full partners with an equal share in what We have given you? Do you fear them as you fear each other? This is how We make Our messages clear to those who use their reason.

33:50 Al-Ahzab

Prophet, We have made lawful for you the wives whose bride gift you have paid, and any slaves God has assigned to you through war, and the daughters of your uncles and aunts on your father’s and mother’s sides, who migrated with you. Also any believing woman who has offered herself to the Prophet and whom the Prophet wishes to wed- this is only for you [Prophet] and not the rest of the believers: We know exactly what We have made obligatory for them concerning their wives and slave-girls- so you should not be blamed: God is most forgiving, most merciful.

33:52 Al-Ahzab

You [Prophet] are not permitted to take any further wives, nor to exchange the wives you have for others, even if these attract you with their beauty. But this does not apply to your slave-girls: God is watchful over all.

33:55 Al-Ahzab

The Prophet’s wives are not to blame [if they are seen by] their fathers, their sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, or their slaves. [Wives of the Prophet], be mindful of God. God observes everything.

70:30 Al-Ma'arij

from all but their spouses or their slave-girls––there is no blame attached to [relations with] these,
