Rather than isolating worship to a single weekly observance, the scriptural rhythm of prayer tracks the physical movement of the sun. Across twenty verses, the text anchors the remembrance of God to specific astronomical shifts: the fading of the night, the sun passing its zenith, and the onset of darkness. This daily cycle transforms ordinary transitions of light into a structured practice. As al-Baghawi notes regarding these verses (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 2/282), the early scholar Mujahid recognized this framework as a prescribed obligation with a fixed time set by God upon the believers.

When are the daily prayers prescribed?

The verses explicitly outline the daily windows for worship. Believers are instructed to perform regular prayers in the period from the time the sun passes its zenith until the darkness of the night, alongside a specific recitation at dawn (17:78). This dawn recitation is singled out as being continuously witnessed. Additional verses expand on this daytime and nighttime structure. The Prophet is told to keep up the prayer at both ends of the day and during parts of the night, with the assurance that these good actions drive away the bad (11:114). God’s glory is to be celebrated in the evening and morning, as well as in the late afternoon and at midday (30:17–18). Even the physical earth participates in this schedule; the mountains are described as joining in this rhythmic glorification at sunrise and sunset (38:18).

How do these times shape household privacy?

The fixed hours of prayer are so central to daily life that they dictate domestic etiquette. The text establishes three specific periods of privacy based directly on the prayer schedule: before the dawn prayer, during the midday heat, and after the evening prayer (24:58). During these windows, children who have not reached puberty and household slaves must explicitly ask permission before entering private rooms. Ibn al-Ahnaf explains (Al-Bustan fi I'rab Mushkilat al-Quran, 1/354) that these are designated as times of vulnerability precisely because people routinely lay their everyday clothing aside to rest. Outside of these prayer-anchored boundaries, household members are free to move around one another freely without blame.

What about worship in the depths of the night?

Beyond the daytime and evening schedule, the night holds a distinct status for voluntary prayer. The command to proclaim God's praise continues into the dark hours and at the end of every prayer (50:40). Believers are encouraged to wake up and pray during the night as an extra offering, with the promise that God may raise them to a highly praised status (17:79). This nighttime devotion requires a physical effort to break from rest; the righteous are characterized as those whose sides actively shun their beds so they can pray to their Lord in a state of fear and hope (32:16).

The command to maintain this rhythm requires endurance against both fatigue and the hostilities of the day. The Prophet is instructed to bear opposition with patience and to celebrate the praise of his Lord before the rising and setting of the sun (50:39). This constant return to worship, persisting from the beginning to the end of the day, is prescribed so that the one praying may find true contentment (20:130).

11:114 Hud

وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ طَرَفَىِ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِ يُذْهِبْنَ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ذِكْرَىٰ لِلذَّٰكِرِينَ

[Prophet], keep up the prayer at both ends of the day, and during parts of the night, for good things drive bad away- this is a reminder for those who are aware.

17:78 Al-Isra

أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِدُلُوكِ ٱلشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَقُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ ۖ إِنَّ قُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا

So perform the regular prayers in the period from the time the sun is past its zenith till the darkness of the night, and [recite] the Quran at dawn- dawn recitation is always witnessed––

17:79 Al-Isra

وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِۦ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا

and dur-ing the night wake up and pray, as an extra offering of your own, so that your Lord may raise you to a [highly] praised status.

20:130 Taha

فَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا ۖ وَمِنْ ءَانَآئِ ٱلَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْ وَأَطْرَافَ ٱلنَّهَارِ لَعَلَّكَ تَرْضَىٰ

so [Prophet] be patient with what they say- celebrate the praise of your Lord, before the rising and setting of the sun, celebrate His praise during the night, and at the beginning and end of the day, so that you may find contentment-

24:36 An-Nur

فِى بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ ٱللَّهُ أَن تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيهَا ٱسْمُهُۥ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ فِيهَا بِٱلْغُدُوِّ وَٱلْـَٔاصَالِ

shining out in houses of worship. God has ordained that they be raised high and that His name be remembered in them, with men in them celebrating His glory morning and evening:

24:58 An-Nur

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِيَسْتَـْٔذِنكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا۟ ٱلْحُلُمَ مِنكُمْ ثَلَـٰثَ مَرَّٰتٍ ۚ مِّن قَبْلِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلْفَجْرِ وَحِينَ تَضَعُونَ ثِيَابَكُم مِّنَ ٱلظَّهِيرَةِ وَمِنۢ بَعْدِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلْعِشَآءِ ۚ ثَلَـٰثُ عَوْرَٰتٍ لَّكُمْ ۚ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَا عَلَيْهِمْ جُنَاحٌۢ بَعْدَهُنَّ ۚ طَوَّٰفُونَ عَلَيْكُم بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

Believers, your slaves and any who have not yet reached puberty should ask your permission to come in at three times of day: before the dawn prayer; when you lay your garments aside in the midday heat; and after the evening prayer. These are your three times for privacy; at other times, there is no blame on you or them if you move around each other freely. In this way God makes messages clear: God is all knowing, all wise.

30:17 Ar-Rum

فَسُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ حِينَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُونَ

So celebrate God’s glory in the evening, in the morning-

30:18 Ar-Rum

وَلَهُ ٱلْحَمْدُ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَعَشِيًّا وَحِينَ تُظْهِرُونَ

praise is due to Him in the heavens and the earth- in the late afternoon, and at midday.

32:16 As-Sajdah

تَتَجَافَىٰ جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ ٱلْمَضَاجِعِ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

Their sides shun their beds in order to pray to their Lord in fear and hope; they give to others some of what We have given them.

38:18 Sad

إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا ٱلْجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِ

We made the mountains join him in glorifying Us at sunset and sunrise;
