Insolence

13 verses

When individuals actively reject a truth they already recognize, this excess transforms into a blinding force. The Arabic term tughyan captures this specific form of insolence. As al-Tabari notes (Tafsir al-Tabari, 10/457), it represents going to extremes in denying known realities and persisting stubbornly in that denial. Rather than a simple lack of faith, this transgression manifests as a structural pride. Those who harbor it do not merely ignore divine messages; they demand spectacular proofs, asking why angels are not sent directly to them or why they cannot see their Lord face-to-face, entirely consumed by their own self-importance (25:21).

How Revelation Fuels Defiance It might seem logical that divine signs and stark warnings would humble a rebellious heart. Yet, the text describes a phenomenon where the very act of revelation accelerates transgression. God tells the People of the Book that they have no true basis for their religion unless they uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been sent down to them, yet this very revelation is sure to increase the insolence and defiance of many (5:68). Specific visions and tests, such as the cursed tree mentioned in the Quran, are provided as warnings, but they only serve to deepen this defiance (17:60).

This posture turns even mercy against itself. If God were to relieve these individuals of their distress and show them mercy, they would still blindly persist in their transgression (23:75). Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri observes that this overwhelming insolence drives a person by nature to deny, reject, and hurl the most extreme accusations (Aysar al-Tafasir, 5/171). This includes the audacious claim made by some that God Himself is "tight-fisted," when in reality, His hands are wide open to give as He pleases (5:64).

The Divine Response of Slack and Wandering If God were to hasten harm upon people as quickly as they wish to hasten good, their time would already be up (10:11). Instead, the divine response to deep-seated insolence is often to allow it space. God responds by mocking them and allowing them more slack, leaving those who do not expect to meet Him to wander blindly in their excesses (2:15, 10:11).

Al-Zamakhshari points out this deliberate extension of time (Tafsir al-Kashshaf, 1/68), emphasizing that this "slack" is a precise mechanism of consequence. Historically, physical dietary penalties were applied for disobedience, such as forbidding the Jews every animal with claws and specific fats of cattle and sheep (6:146). However, the severe psychological penalty for insolence is simply being abandoned to it. God turns their hearts and eyes away, exactly as they refused to believe the first time, leaving them to flounder in their obstinacy (6:110). Because no one can guide a person whom God has allowed to stray, they are left blundering about, trapped by the very independence they thought they possessed (7:186).

This rebellion infects the earth, driving the insolent to kindle the fire of war and spread corruption, though God consistently puts out those fires because He does not love those who corrupt (5:64). The threat of this wickedness is so severe that a young boy's life was ended to protect his faithful parents, out of the fear that he would eventually overwhelm them with his future insolence and disbelief (18:80). Ultimately, the slack given to the arrogant is only temporary, ending when God seizes out of each group those who were most disobedient towards the Lord of Mercy (19:69).

2:15 Al-Baqarah

God is mocking them, and allowing them more slack to wander blindly in their insolence.

5:64 Al-Ma'idah

The Jews have said, ‘God is tight-fisted,’ but it is they who are tight-fisted, and they are rejected for what they have said. Truly, God’s hands are open wide: He gives as He pleases. What has been sent down to you from your Lord is sure to increase insolence and defiance in many of them. We have sown enmity and hatred amongst them till the Day of Resurrection. Whenever they kindle the fire of war, God will put it out. They try to spread corruption in the land, but God does not love those who corrupt.

5:68 Al-Ma'idah

Say, ‘People of the Book, you have no true basis [for your religion] unless you uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and that which has been sent down to you from your Lord,’ but what has been sent down to you [Prophet] from your Lord is sure to increase many of them in their insolence and defiance: do not worry about those who defy [God].

6:110 Al-An'am

We would make their hearts and their eyes turn away, just as they did not believe the first time, and leave them to flounder in their obstinacy.

6:146 Al-An'am

We forbade for the Jews every animal with claws, and the fat of cattle and sheep, except what is on their backs and in their intestines, or that which sticks to their bones. This is how We penalized them for their disobedience: We are true to Our word.

7:186 Al-A'raf

No one can guide those God allows to stray: He leaves them blundering about in their insolence.

10:11 Yunus

If God were to hasten on for people the harm [they have earned] as they wish to hasten on the good, their time would already be up. But We leave those who do not expect to meet Us to wander blindly in their excesses.

17:60 Al-Isra

[Prophet], We have told you that your Lord knows all about human beings. The vision We showed you was only a test for people, as was the cursed tree [mentioned] in the Quran. We warn them, but this only increases their insolence.

18:80 Al-Kahf

The young boy had parents who were people of faith, and so, fearing he would trouble them through wickedness and disbelief,

19:69 Maryam

We shall seize out of each group those who were most disobedient towards the Lord of Mercy-

23:75 Al-Mu'minun

Even if We were to show them mercy and relieve them of distress, they would blindly persist in their transgression.

25:21 Al-Furqan

Those who do not fear to meet Us say, ‘Why are the angels not sent down to us?’ or ‘Why can we not see our Lord?’ They are too proud of themselves and too insolent.

67:21 Al-Mulk

Who can provide for you if He withholds His provision? Yet they persist in their insolence and their avoidance of the Truth.
