Sincere

12 verses

Rather than identifying with a specific sectarian label, the Quran repeatedly commands the Prophet Muhammad to follow the religion of Abraham, a man described as hanif—possessing pure, upright, and sincere faith (16:123). This primordial monotheism strips away later historical divisions, pointing back to a state of being wholly directed toward God without associating any partners with Him. The Quran frames this sincerity not merely as a theological stance, but as a total orientation of the self.

Why is Abraham the central model of sincerity?

When contemporaries suggested that right guidance required becoming Jewish or Christian, the Quran countered by pointing to Abraham, who existed long before those religious categories formed (2:135). He was "neither a Jew nor a Christian," but rather an upright man devoted entirely to God, never acting as an idolater (3:67). The text establishes his creed as the absolute standard, instructing the Prophet to declare that God speaks the truth, and that humanity should follow Abraham's religion (3:95). To follow his path is to align with truth, as God Himself took Abraham as a friend for his unyielding faith (4:125). He was a standalone exemplar, devoutly obedient and resolutely pure in a polytheistic world (16:120).

What defines this upright state?

The Arabic term hanif appears consistently alongside the strict rejection of polytheism. Classical commentators expand on this deliberate posture of the human heart. In Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur (3/92), the early exegete Khusayf defines the hanif simply as al-mukhlis—the thoroughly sincere. Al-Qushayri notes (Lata'if al-Isharat, 2/327) that it means being straight in religion, or "inclining completely toward the truth."

The Quran illustrates this inclination through the physical metaphor of orientation, commanding the believer to set their face toward religion as a person of pure faith (10:105). As Ibn Abbas explains (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 11/334), "your face is your action." True sincerity, therefore, is not just a private internal feeling but a deliberate alignment of all one's deeds toward Him who created the heavens and the earth (6:79). Because of this complete focus, the religion itself is described as a straight path (6:161).

Is this devotion a learned behavior or a natural state?

This upright religion is not presented as an alien ideology imposed on humanity, but as the fitrah—the original, natural disposition that God instilled directly into mankind (30:30). Maintaining this innate purity requires practicing the core tenets of true religion: worshiping God alone, keeping up regular prayer, and paying prescribed alms (98:5). By standing firm in this pure faith, a person remains anchored in the reality of God's unalterable creation, even though most people fail to realize it (30:30).

Abandoning this singular devotion to assign partners to God violently severs a person from their natural state. The Quran compares the one who compromises this pure monotheism to someone who has been hurled down from the skies, abruptly snatched up by birds or flung to a distant, desolate place by the wind (22:31).

2:135 Al-Baqarah

They say, ‘Become Jews or Christians, and you will be rightly guided.’ Say [Prophet], ‘No, [ours is] the religion of Abraham, the upright, who did not worship any god besides God.’

3:67 Ali 'Imran

Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. He was upright and devoted to God, never an idolater,

3:95 Ali 'Imran

[Prophet], say, ‘God speaks the truth, so follow Abraham’s religion: he had true faith and he was never an idolater.’

4:125 An-Nisa

Who could be better in religion than those who direct themselves wholly to God, do good, and follow the religion of Abraham, who was true in faith? God took Abraham as a friend.

6:79 Al-An'am

I have turned my face as a true believer towards Him who created the heavens and the earth. I am not one of the polytheists.’

6:161 Al-An'am

Say, ‘My Lord has guided me to a straight path, an upright religion, the faith of Abraham, a man of pure faith. He was not a polytheist.’

10:105 Yunus

[Prophet], set your face towards religion as a man of pure faith. Do not be one of those who join partners with God;

16:120 An-Nahl

Abraham was truly an example: devoutly obedient to God and true in faith. He was not an idolater;

16:123 An-Nahl

Then We revealed to you [Muhammad], ‘Follow the creed of Abraham, a man of pure faith who was not an idolater.’

22:31 Al-Hajj

Devote yourselves to God and assign Him no partners, for the person who does so is like someone who has been hurled down from the skies and snatched up by the birds or flung to a distant place by the wind.

30:30 Ar-Rum

So [Prophet] as a man of pure faith, stand firm and true in your devotion to the religion. This is the natural disposition God instilled in mankind- there is no altering God’s creation- and this is the right religion, though most people do not realize it.

98:5 Al-Bayyinah

though all they are ordered to do is worship God alone, sincerely devoting their religion to Him as people of true faith, keep up the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms, for that is the true religion.
