Before a human foot touched the earth, the angels anticipated destruction. When Allah told them, "I am putting a successor on earth," they met the announcement with bewilderment. They asked how He could place someone there who would cause damage and bloodshed, pointing out that they themselves constantly celebrate His praise and proclaim His holiness (2:30). The Creator’s response to their concern was not an explanation of human nature, but a definitive statement of His own supreme awareness: "I know things you do not."
Why did the angels bow to Adam?
The elevation of Adam was rooted directly in a demonstration of knowledge. Allah personally taught Adam "all the names" of things, a cognitive capacity withheld from the rest of creation. To prove this distinction, Allah presented these subjects to the angels and challenged them: "Tell me the names of these if you truly [think you can]" (2:31).
The angels recognized their inherent limits. They glorified Allah, admitting, "We have knowledge only of what You have taught us. You are the All Knowing and All Wise" (2:32). When Allah told Adam to tell them the names, and he successfully did so, it validated the unique status granted to this new successor. Allah then addressed the angels, asking if He had not told them that He knows what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, as well as what they reveal and conceal (2:33).
Following this proof, Allah commanded the angels to bow down before Adam. They all complied immediately. The sole exception was Iblis, who refused the command and was arrogant, marking himself permanently as one of the disobedient (2:34).
How did Satan cause the fall?
Following this honour, Adam and his wife were settled in a garden of absolute provision. Allah instructed them to live there and eat freely wherever they willed. Their continued residence rested on a single, clear boundary: He warned them not to go near one specific tree, explicitly stating that doing so would make them wrongdoers (2:35).
Satan, however, intervened. The text notes simply that Satan "made them slip," successfully causing them to breach that solitary restriction. This single error removed them entirely from the state they were in (2:36). The consequence was immediate expulsion. Allah decreed, "Get out, all of you!" and established that on earth they would be enemies to one another, finding only a temporary place to stay and a livelihood for a fixed time.
The descent from the garden, while a demotion, was paired with immediate divine instruction. Adam received specific words directly from his Lord to seek pardon, and Allah—the Ever Relenting, the Most Merciful—accepted his repentance (2:37). Even though the physical consequence remained and they were ordered out of the garden to begin their earthly tenure, Allah attached a permanent guarantee to their departure: guidance will certainly come from Him, and there will be no fear for those who follow it, nor will they grieve (2:38).

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى جَاعِلٌ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ ٱلدِّمَآءَ وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
[Prophet], when your Lord told the angels, ‘I am putting a successor on earth,’ they said, ‘How can You put someone there who will cause damage and bloodshed, when we celebrate Your praise and proclaim Your holiness?’ but He said, ‘I know things you do not.’
وَعَلَّمَ ءَادَمَ ٱلْأَسْمَآءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنۢبِـُٔونِى بِأَسْمَآءِ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
He taught Adam all the names [of things], then He showed them to the angels and said, ‘Tell me the names of these if you truly [think you can].’
قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَآ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
They said, ‘May You be glorified! We have knowledge only of what You have taught us. You are the All Knowing and All Wise.’
قَالَ يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ أَنۢبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَنۢبَأَهُم بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَأَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ
Then He said, ‘Adam, tell them the names of these.’ When he told them their names, God said, ‘Did I not tell you that I know what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and that I know what you reveal and what you conceal?’
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِـَٔادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
When We told the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ they all bowed. But not Iblis, who refused and was arrogant: he was one of the disobedient.
وَقُلْنَا يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ ٱسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَكُلَا مِنْهَا رَغَدًا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
We said, ‘Adam, live with your wife in this garden. Both of you eat freely there as you will, but do not go near this tree, or you will both become wrongdoers.’
فَأَزَلَّهُمَا ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِمَّا كَانَا فِيهِ ۖ وَقُلْنَا ٱهْبِطُوا۟ بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَـٰعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ
But Satan made them slip, and removed them from the state they were in. We said, ‘Get out, all of you! You are each other’s enemy. On earth you will have a place to stay and livelihood for a time.’
فَتَلَقَّىٰٓ ءَادَمُ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ كَلِمَـٰتٍ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Then Adam received some words from his Lord and He accepted his repentance: He is the Ever Relenting, the Most Merciful.
قُلْنَا ٱهْبِطُوا۟ مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا ۖ فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّى هُدًى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَاىَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
We said, ‘Get out, all of you! But when guidance comes from Me, as it certainly will, there will be no fear for those who follow My guidance nor will they grieve-
