Such a person operates under the false assumption that they are independent, severing the connection between the blessings they hold and the Creator who provided them.

What drives the refusal to spend?

At its core, miserliness functions as an act of profound ingratitude. Those who are stingy actively attempt to hide the bounty God has given them, a denial of divine favor that results in a humiliating torment prepared specifically for such ungrateful people (4:37). The refusal to part with wealth exposes a deep, underlying resentment toward the command to give. If God were to actually ask and press people for their possessions, they would react by being grudging, and this divine pressure would bring their concealed ill-will into the light (47:37). By turning away from the obligation to spend, the miser acts as though the Creator needs their wealth, forgetting the reality that God is entirely self-sufficient and inherently worthy of praise (57:24).

How does miserliness affect others?

Stinginess operates not merely as a private, isolated failing, but as a behavior its practitioners actively attempt to normalize in society. The verses repeatedly condemn those who are themselves miserly and then go on to order other people to be the same (4:37, 57:24). By instructing others to withhold their resources, they create a culture built on hiding divine bounty. What is the required balance?

The standard established to counter this stinginess is not a demand for believers to recklessly give away everything they own. Instead, those who follow the correct path are defined by strict moderation in how they manage and distribute their resources. When they spend, they are recognized by their ability to keep to a "just balance," ensuring that they are neither wasteful with their wealth nor niggardly in their charity (25:67).

The ultimate consequence for those who falsely believe that withholding is good for them takes a stark, physical form. The delusion that hoarding provides lasting security is entirely inverted when they face judgment. The very possessions they meanly withheld will not save them; instead, that hoarded wealth will be hung heavily around their necks on the Day of Resurrection (3:180).
