Interpretation

13 verses

In the Quranic framework, interpretation (ta'wil) is not merely assigning a definition to a word, but understanding the ultimate reality to which a statement points. Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi defines the scholarly act as redirecting a verse from its immediate surface meaning to another plausible meaning (Qanun al-Ta'wil, 233). Yet the Quran frequently employs the term to describe a physical manifestation rather than a textual exercise. As Abd al-Rahman bin Qasim notes, interpretation in the Quran often refers to the actual occurrence or fulfillment of what was foretold (Hashiyat Muqaddimat al-Tafsir, 72). The text divides this concept between divine knowledge granted to prophets and the dangerous distortions attempted by those with corrupt intentions.

Who Decides the Meaning of Ambiguous Verses?

The Quran categorizes its own text into two types of verses: those that are definite in meaning, which serve as the cornerstone of the Scripture, and others that are ambiguous (3:7). The text explicitly warns against forcing a definitive interpretation onto the latter. People described as being perverse at heart actively pursue these ambiguities, attempting to pin down a specific meaning of their own to cause trouble and discord. The Quran establishes a strict limit on human comprehension here, stating that only God knows the true meaning. In contrast, those firmly grounded in knowledge accept the entirety of the text, stating they believe it is all from their Lord, without forcing an interpretation they cannot verify (3:7).

When humans attempt to manipulate scripture, interpretation shifts into distortion. The Quran criticizes groups who actively twist the meaning of revealed words to disparage religion, swapping respectful phrases for insults like "We hear and disobey" (4:46). God describes this deliberate distortion as a breach of their pledge, resulting in hardened hearts and a loss of the very knowledge they were told to remember (5:13). These individuals eagerly listen to lies and evaluate rulings based solely on their desires, telling one another to accept a judgment only if it aligns with what they already want, and to beware if it does not (5:41).

How Does the Quran View Dream Interpretation?

In the narrative of Joseph, interpretation moves from the theological to the intimately prophetic. Here, deciphering dreams is framed not as an acquired human skill, but as a direct divine intervention. God promises to teach Joseph how to interpret dreams as a means of perfecting His blessing upon him and the House of Jacob (12:6), an education that continues after Joseph is settled in Egypt (12:21).

Secular attempts to interpret visions consistently fail in this narrative. When two young men in prison ask Joseph the meaning of their dreams about pressing grapes and carrying bread, they do so because they recognize him as a knowledgeable man (12:36). Later, when the Egyptian king demands the meaning of his dream regarding seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, his counselors dismiss the visions as confusing and admit they are not skilled at dream-interpretation (12:43-44). It is only through Joseph, a freed prisoner acting on divine instruction, that the true meaning is uncovered (12:45).

Crucially, this form of interpretation culminates in physical reality. Years after his initial vision, when Joseph brings his parents to his throne and his brothers bow before him, he identifies that exact physical moment as the fulfillment of his childhood dream (12:100).

The Quran treats ultimate interpretation as an unveiling of reality that belongs to God. Human failure to grasp this often leads to outright rejection. People frequently deny what they cannot immediately comprehend, rejecting scripture before its prophecy or final meaning has yet been fulfilled for them (10:39). The text points to the end of earlier evildoers who refused to believe, demonstrating the consequence of denying a truth before its final reality takes shape.

3:7 Ali 'Imran

it is He who has sent this Scripture down to you [Prophet]. Some of its verses are definite in meaning- these are the cornerstone of the Scripture- and others are ambiguous. The perverse at heart eagerly pursue the ambiguities in their attempt to make trouble and to pin down a specific meaning of their own: only God knows the true meaning. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, ‘We believe in it: it is all from our Lord’- only those with real perception will take heed-

4:46 An-Nisa

Some Jews distort the meaning of [revealed] words: they say, ‘We hear and disobey,’ and ‘Listen,’ [adding the insult] ‘May you not hear,’ and ‘Raina [Look at us],’ twisting it abusively with their tongues so as to disparage religion. If they had said, ‘We hear and obey,’ ‘Listen,’ and ‘Unzurna [Look at us],’ that would have been better and more proper for them. But God has spurned them for their defiance; they believe very little.

5:13 Al-Ma'idah

But they broke their pledge, so We distanced them [from Us] and hardened their hearts. They distort the meaning of [revealed] words and have forgotten some of what they were told to remember: you [Prophet] will always find treachery in all but a few of them. Overlook this and pardon them: God loves those who do good.

5:41 Al-Ma'idah

Messenger, do not be grieved by those who race to surpass one another in disbelief- those who say with their mouths, ‘We believe,’ but have no faith in their hearts, and the Jews who listen eagerly to lies and to those who have not even met you, who distort the meanings of [revealed] words and say [to each other], ‘If you are given this ruling, accept it, but if you are not, then beware!’––if God intends some people to be so misguided, you will be powerless against God on their behalf. These are the ones whose hearts God does not intend to cleanse- a disgrace for them in this world, and then a heavy punishment in the Hereafter-

10:39 Yunus

But they are denying what they cannot comprehend- its prophecy has yet to be fulfilled for them. In the same way, those before them refused to believe- see what was the end of those evildoers!

12:6 Yusuf

This is about how your Lord will choose you, teach you to interpret dreams, and perfect His blessing on you and the House of Jacob, just as He perfected it earlier on your forefathers Abraham and Isaac: your Lord is all knowing and wise.’

12:21 Yusuf

The Egyptian who bought him said to his wife, ‘Look after him well! He may be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son.’ In this way We settled Joseph in that land and later taught him how to interpret dreams: God always prevails in His purpose, though most people do not realize it.

12:36 Yusuf

Two young men went into prison alongside him. One of them said, ‘I dreamed that I was pressing grapes’; the other said, ‘I dreamed that I was carrying bread on my head and that the birds were eating it.’ [They said], ‘Tell us what this means- we can see that you are a knowledgeable man.’

12:43 Yusuf

The king said, ‘I dreamed about seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones; seven green ears of corn and [seven] others withered. Counsellors, if you can interpret dreams, tell me the meaning of my dream.’

12:44 Yusuf

They said, ‘These are confusing dreams and we are not skilled at dream-interpretation,’

12:45 Yusuf

but the prisoner who had been freed at last remembered [Joseph] and said, ‘I shall tell you what this means. Give me leave to go.’

12:100 Yusuf

and took them up to [his] throne. They all bowed down before him and he said, ‘Father, this is the fulfilment of that dream I had long ago. My Lord has made it come true and has been gracious to me- He released me from prison and He brought you here from the desert- after Satan sowed discord between me and my brothers. My Lord is most subtle in achieving what He will; He is the All Knowing, the Truly Wise.

12:101 Yusuf

My Lord! You have given me authority; You have taught me something about the interpretation of dreams; Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Let me die in true devotion to You. Join me with the righteous.’
