When the Quran addresses the act of studying, it binds the rigorous examination of scripture directly to sincere devotion to God. In its historical context, the text frames the revelation of the Quran as a necessary intervention to remove the Arabs' excuse of ignorance. Without it, they could have argued on the Day of Judgment that "Scriptures were only sent down to two communities before us: we were not aware of what they studied" (6:156). By granting a new, localized text to examine, the Quran transforms study from a distant practice of older communities into an immediate standard of proof.

What is the purpose of studying scripture?

The Quran defines the ultimate goal of teaching and closely examining a text as complete servitude to God. It explicitly rejects the notion that a prophet, having been granted scripture and wisdom, would leverage that knowledge to demand personal obedience or self-aggrandizement. Instead, a true messenger instructs his followers: "You should be devoted to God because you have taught the Scripture and studied it closely" (3:79). The direct result of rigorous study is meant to be a deeper devotion to the divine. In his commentary on this verse, al-Tabari notes (Tafsir al-Tabari, 6/546) that the "studying" mentioned here refers directly to the Quran, as the verse explicitly pairs it with teaching "the Book," making the study of the revelation itself the priority over secondary fields of law that had not yet been established.

How was the concept of study used against the Prophet?

Before the Quran, the immediate audience in Mecca did not possess a legacy of sacred texts. The Quran points out this historical void, noting that God had "not given them any books to study nor sent any warner before you" (34:44). Because of this unfamiliarity, the detailed arguments, historical narratives, and varied explanations of the new revelation shocked its listeners. God states that He details His signs "in various ways" to make the truth clear for those with knowledge (6:105). Yet, this intellectual depth provoked suspicion among opponents who could not fathom an unlettered man producing such material independently. They weaponized the concept of study against him, accusing him by saying, "You have been studying" (6:105)—an allegation that he must have been secretly tutored by scholars of earlier traditions.

How does the Quran challenge unstudied beliefs?

Because studying is established as the prerequisite for valid religious knowledge, the Quran frequently targets claims that lack a textual foundation. Those who opposed the message often relied on inherited tribal customs to determine truth, falsehood, or divine favor. The Quran dismisses these assumptions by highlighting their lack of source material. It reminds the audience of their historical reality, emphasizing that God had not previously provided them with "any books to study" (34:44). Consequently, any inherited dogma they held about the unseen or divine law was entirely ungrounded.

This insistence on scriptural study fundamentally shifts how truth is verified. Rather than accepting ancestral habits or baseless spiritual claims, the reader is directed back to the primary text. When confronting those who invent false religious certainties, the Quran demands hard evidence of their study, dismantling the very foundation of their arrogance with a stark question: "Do you have a Scripture that tells you" (68:37).
