The Quran measures divine justice and awareness not just in celestial bodies, but in the microscopic anatomy of a date seed and floating particles of dust. To illustrate that no injustice will occur on the Day of Judgment, the text bypasses broad abstractions and points directly to the husk, the fine fibre, and the tiny groove on a date stone as the ultimate weights of human accountability.
The Anatomy of a Date Stone
When establishing the precision of God's judgment, the Quran repeatedly references the physical structures of a date seed. Believers who do good deeds, male or female, are promised they will enter Paradise without being wronged by as much as the "dip in a date stone" (4:124). This exacting standard applies equally to those who boast of their own righteousness; they are reminded that God purifies whomever He wills, and no one is wronged by so much as the seed's husk (4:49).
This exactness extends to moments of intense fear and worldly attachment. When fighting was ordained and some feared men as much as they feared God, asking for more time, they were told that worldly enjoyment is little. The Hereafter is far better for the mindful, where they will not be shortchanged by even the fibre in a date stone (4:77). The imagery also underscores divine sovereignty by exposing the powerlessness of false deities. The entities people invoke besides God do not control even the thin skin covering a date stone (35:13).
What Escapes the Record?
The divine record misses nothing, regardless of scale. In whatever matter a person is engaged, whatever part of the Quran they recite, and whatever work they do, God witnesses it. Not even the weight of a speck of dust in the earth or sky escapes the Lord, nor anything lesser or greater; it is all written in a clear record (10:61).
Reflecting on the record that omits neither small nor great things, classical commentators noted the intense precision of this ledger. As al-Tha'labi notes (Tafsir al-Tha'labi, 17/ 165), Ibn Abbas interpreted the smallest entry in the book of deeds as a mere smile, and the large as a laugh. When each community is summoned with its leader, those given their record in their right hand will read it with pleasure, knowing they have not been wronged in the least (17:71).
Dust in the Balance
The image of a floating speck defines the threshold of both reward and ultimate loss. While God does not wrong anyone by the weight of a speck of dust, He actively multiplies it when it comes to righteousness. He takes a minuscule good deed, doubles it, and adds a tremendous reward of His own (4:40). Yet, the same particulate imagery illustrates the futility of actions not rooted in faith. When God turns to the deeds done by those who rejected Him, He will not weigh them, but simply scatter them like dust (25:23).
In the scales of the Hereafter, human actions are never approximated or rounded off. A person's final standing depends on microscopic exactness, where every believer who did good enters Paradise without being shortchanged by the dip in a date stone. For the righteous, strict justice transitions into sheer grace, where God takes a single speck of dust, doubles it, and grants a tremendous reward of His own.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ ۖ وَإِن تَكُ حَسَنَةً يُضَـٰعِفْهَا وَيُؤْتِ مِن لَّدُنْهُ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
He does not wrong anyone by as much as the weight of a speck of dust: He doubles any good deed and gives a tremendous reward of His own.
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُزَكُّونَ أَنفُسَهُم ۚ بَلِ ٱللَّهُ يُزَكِّى مَن يَشَآءُ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا
[Prophet], have you considered those who claim purity for themselves? No! God purifies whoever He will: no one will be wronged by as much as the husk of a date stone.
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ قِيلَ لَهُمْ كُفُّوٓا۟ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ إِذَا فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَخْشَوْنَ ٱلنَّاسَ كَخَشْيَةِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ أَشَدَّ خَشْيَةً ۚ وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لِمَ كَتَبْتَ عَلَيْنَا ٱلْقِتَالَ لَوْلَآ أَخَّرْتَنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ قَرِيبٍ ۗ قُلْ مَتَـٰعُ ٱلدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا
[Prophet], do you not see those who were told, ‘Restrain yourselves from fighting, perform the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms’? When fighting was ordained for them, some of them feared men as much as, or even more than, they feared God, saying, ‘Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us? If only You would give us just a little more time.’ Say to them, ‘Little is the enjoyment in this world, the Hereafter is far better for those who are mindful of God: you will not be wronged by as much as the fibre in a date stone.
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ مِن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ نَقِيرًا
anyone, male or female, who does good deeds and is a believer, will enter Paradise and will not be wronged by as much as the dip in a date stone.
وَمَا تَكُونُ فِى شَأْنٍ وَمَا تَتْلُوا۟ مِنْهُ مِن قُرْءَانٍ وَلَا تَعْمَلُونَ مِنْ عَمَلٍ إِلَّا كُنَّا عَلَيْكُمْ شُهُودًا إِذْ تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَا يَعْزُبُ عَن رَّبِّكَ مِن مِّثْقَالِ ذَرَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَلَآ أَصْغَرَ مِن ذَٰلِكَ وَلَآ أَكْبَرَ إِلَّا فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مُّبِينٍ
In whatever matter you [Prophet] may be engaged and whatever part of the Quran you are reciting, whatever work you [people] are doing, We witness you when you are engaged in it. Not even the weight of a speck of dust in the earth or sky escapes your Lord, nor anything lesser or greater: it is all written in a clear record.
يَوْمَ نَدْعُوا۟ كُلَّ أُنَاسٍۭ بِإِمَـٰمِهِمْ ۖ فَمَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَقْرَءُونَ كِتَـٰبَهُمْ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا
On the Day when We summon each community, along with its leader, those who are given their record in their right hand will read it [with pleasure]. But no one will be wronged in the least:
وَقَدِمْنَآ إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ هَبَآءً مَّنثُورًا
and We shall turn to the deeds they have done and scatter them like dust.
يُولِجُ ٱلَّيْلَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِى ٱلَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ لَهُ ٱلْمُلْكُ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِن قِطْمِيرٍ
He makes the night merge into the day and the day into the night; He has subjected the sun and the moon- each runs for an appointed term. Such is God your Lord: all control belongs to Him. Those you invoke beside Him do not even control the skin of a date stone;
