Sacrifice
11 verses
When the two sons of Adam each presented an offering, the fundamental rule governing this act was established: God only accepts the sacrifice of those who are mindful of Him (5:27). The physical act of giving something up is inseparable from the inner state of the person offering it. The history of this rite spans from those early brothers to past nations who demanded prophets produce a sacrifice consumed by fire from heaven (3:183), up to the immense trials of later messengers. At its core, the command requires directing the act entirely to the Creator, as the Prophet was instructed to pray to his Lord and make his sacrifice to Him alone (108:2).
How does sacrifice function during the pilgrimage?
The physical rites of sacrifice are heavily detailed in the context of the Ka'ba and the Sacred Months. The animals designated for offering—along with the garlands placed upon them to mark their purpose—are elevated as inviolable symbols of God's rites, serving as a means of support for people (5:2, 5:97). Pilgrims must send an offering if they are prevented from completing the major or minor pilgrimage, delaying the shaving of their heads until the animal reaches its destination (2:196).
The texts provide exact contingencies for those who lack the means to offer a physical animal, such as a sheep, as noted by Bakr bin al-Ala regarding the permissible offerings (Ahkam al-Quran, 1/164). Those unable to afford the sacrifice during a break between pilgrimages must fast for three days during the journey and seven upon returning home, making ten days in all (2:196). If a pilgrim is ill or has a scalp ailment requiring them to shave their head early, they compensate by fasting, feeding the poor, or offering a sacrifice. Similar compensations apply if a pilgrim violates the state of consecration by intentionally killing game; they must bring an equivalent domestic animal to the Ka'ba, as judged by two just men, or compensate by feeding the needy or fasting an equivalent number of days (5:95).
How are the sacrificed animals used?
The purpose of the animal extends into practical sustenance and gratitude. Camels are explicitly named as part of God's sacred rites. The command is to invoke God’s name over them as they stand lined up for sacrifice (22:36). Once they fall down dead, the meat is distributed immediately to the community. The directive specifies feeding yourselves, feeding the content poor who do not ask for help, and feeding those who actively beg (22:36). The animals are subjected to human use in this specific way to generate thankfulness.
What was the momentous sacrifice?
Beyond the annual rites, sacrifice features as the severest test of human surrender. When Abraham saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his son, he asked the boy for his thoughts (37:102). The son's reply demonstrated total steadfastness, telling his father to do exactly as commanded. Because of this absolute willingness to give up what was most beloved, God ransomed the son with a "momentous sacrifice" (37:107).
The physical animals brought to the Ka'ba and the precise rules for making up missed rites are outward expressions of this complete internal surrender. The believer's offerings are fundamentally tied to the command to declare that their prayers, their sacrifice, their life, and their death are all entirely for God, Lord of all the Worlds (6:162).

Complete the pilgrimages, major and minor, for the sake of God. If you are prevented [from doing so], then [send] whatever offering for sacrifice you can afford, and do not shave your headsuntil the offering has reached the place of sacrifice. If any of you is ill, or has an ailment of the scalp, he should compensate by fasting, or feeding the poor, or offering sacrifice. When you are in safety, anyone wishing to take a break between the minor pilgrimage and the major one must make whatever offering he can afford. If he lacks the means, he should fast for three days during the pilgrimage, and seven days on his return, making ten days in all. This applies to those whose household is not near the Sacred Mosque. Always be mindful of God, and be aware that He is stern in His retribution.
To those who say, ‘God has commanded us not to believe in any messenger unless he brings us an offering that fire [from heaven] consumes,’ say [Prophet], ‘Messengers before me have come to you with clear signs, including the one you mention. If you are sincere, why did you kill them?’
so, you who believe, do not violate the sanctity of God’s rites, the Sacred Month, the offerings, their garlands, nor those going to the Sacred House to seek the bounty and pleasure of their Lord––but when you have completed the rites of pilgrimage you may hunt. Do not let your hatred for the people who barred you from the Sacred Mosque induce you to break the law: help one another to do what is right and good; do not help one another towards sin and hostility. Be mindful of God, for His punishment is severe.
[Prophet], tell them the truth about the story of Adam’s two sons: each of them offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one and not the other. One said, ‘I will kill you,’ but the other said, ‘God only accepts the sacrifice of those who are mindful of Him.
You who believe, do not kill game while you are in the state of consecration [for pilgrimage]. If someone does so intentionally the penalty is an offering of a domestic animal brought to the Kaba, equivalent- as judged by two just men among you- to the one he has killed; alternatively, he may atone by feeding the needy or by fasting an equivalent number of days, so that he may taste the full gravity of his deed. God forgives what is past, but if anyone re-offends, God will exact the penalty from him: God is mighty, and capable of exacting the penalty.
God has made the Ka'ba- the Sacred House- a means of support for people, and the Sacred Months, the animals for sacrifice and their garlands: all this. Know that God has knowledge of all that is in the heavens and earth and that He is fully aware of all things.
Say, ‘My prayers and sacrifice, my life and death, are all for God, Lord of all the Worlds;
We have made camels part of God’s sacred rites for you. There is much good in them for you, so invoke God’s name over them as they are lined up for sacrifice, then, when they have fallen down dead, feed yourselves and those who do not ask, as well as those who do. We have subjected them to you in this way so that you may be thankful.
When the boy was old enough to work with his father, Abraham said, ‘My son, I have seen myself sacrificing you in a dream. What do you think?’ He said, ‘Father, do as you are commanded and, God willing, you will find me steadfast.’
We ransomed his son with a momentous sacrifice,
so pray to your Lord and make your sacrifice to Him alone––
