The Quran treats the physical boundaries of a household as an absolute limit, placing a resident's right to seclusion above the social expectation to host. Before crossing any threshold, a person must ask permission and offer greetings to those inside, a practice established as the best course of action (24:27). This boundary persists even when a house sits empty. If no one is home to grant permission, visitors are strictly barred from walking inside (24:28).
What if a visitor is turned away?
The requirement to seek permission is paired with an uncompromising rule regarding rejection. If a person knocks and the inhabitants simply say, "Go away," the visitor must leave immediately. The text does not treat this as an insult; instead, it calls the act of turning back "more proper for you," noting that God knows well what people do (24:28). The only homes exempt from the rule of permission are uninhabited places that provide a "useful service," where entering carries no risk of intruding on someone’s private life (24:29).
Social familiarity relaxes some rules around hospitality, though it never removes the requirement to announce one's arrival. The blind, the lame, and the sick bear no blame regarding these gatherings, and relatives may eat freely in each other's spaces. Whether at the homes of parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, or friends whose keys one holds, dining together or separately is entirely permissible (24:61). Yet, upon entering any of these houses, visitors must still offer a greeting of blessing and goodness enjoined by God.
When do family members need permission to enter a room?
Privacy rules in the Quran extend inward to the residents of the same house, linking physical boundaries to periods of rest and undress. Slaves and children who have not yet reached puberty are commanded to ask permission before entering private quarters during three distinct windows: before the dawn prayer, when garments are set aside in the midday heat, and after the evening prayer (24:58). The text designates these as "three times for privacy." Outside of these specific hours, younger household members and attendants may move around freely and mingle without asking leave.
This tiered system of access ends abruptly at maturity. Once children reach puberty, they lose the daytime exemptions. From that point forward, they must ask permission to enter a room at all times, fully matching the strict etiquette required of their elders (24:59).
How long should a guest stay?
Beyond the front door, the text regulates a guest's footprint on a host's time, using the Prophet’s own household to demonstrate boundaries. Believers were explicitly instructed not to enter his apartments for a meal unless permitted, and specifically warned against arriving early to linger while the food was being readied (33:53). Once the meal concluded, the command was simply to leave. Guests who stayed late to talk offended the Prophet, who shrank from asking them to depart; the text corrects this social friction by stating that "God does not shrink from the truth" (33:53).
This respect for seclusion also governed how outsiders sought attention. People who stood outside the Prophet’s private rooms and shouted for him were described as lacking understanding (49:4). The standard of proper conduct required them to wait patiently outside until he emerged on his own schedule (49:5).
The rules governing interaction with the Prophet’s wives further cement these physical limits. When asking them for something, men were instructed to do so from behind a screen. The Quran grounds this physical barrier in spiritual protection, stating that communicating through a partition is purer both for the hearts of those asking and those answering (33:53).

Believers, do not enter other people’s houses until you have asked permission to do so and greeted those inside- that is best for you: perhaps you will bear this in mind.
If you find no one in, do not enter unless you have been given permission to do so. If you are told, ‘Go away’, then do so- that is more proper for you. God knows well what you do.
You will not be blamed for entering houses where no one lives, and which could provide you with some useful service. God knows everything you do openly and everything you conceal.
Believers, your slaves and any who have not yet reached puberty should ask your permission to come in at three times of day: before the dawn prayer; when you lay your garments aside in the midday heat; and after the evening prayer. These are your three times for privacy; at other times, there is no blame on you or them if you move around each other freely. In this way God makes messages clear: God is all knowing, all wise.
When your children reach puberty, they should [always] ask your permission to enter, like their elders do. This is how God makes His messages clear to you: God is all knowing, all wise.
No blame will be attached to the blind, the lame, the sick.Whether you eat in your own houses, or those of your fathers, your mothers, your brothers, your sisters, your paternal uncles, your paternal aunts, your maternal uncles, your maternal aunts, houses you have the keys for, or any of your friends’ houses, you will not be blamed: you will not be blamed whether you eat in company or separately. When you enter any house, greet one another with a greeting of blessing and goodness as enjoined by God. This is how God makes His messages clear to you so that you may understand.
Believers, do not enter the Prophet’s apartments for a meal unless you are given permission to do so; do not linger until [a meal] is ready. When you are invited, go in; then, when you have taken your meal, leave. Do not stay on and talk, for that would offend the Prophet, though he would shrink from asking you to leave. God does not shrink from the truth. When you ask his wives for something, do so from behind a screen: this is purer both for your hearts and for theirs. It is not right for you to offend God’s Messenger, just as you should never marry his wives after him: that would be grievous in God’s eyes.
but most of those who shout to you [Prophet] from outside your private rooms lack understanding.
It would have been better for them if they had waited patiently for you to come out to them but God is all forgiving and merciful.
