The physical progression of human gestation begins as a "light burden" before the mother eventually "grows heavy" (7:189). Rather than treating this biological process as a mere mechanical sequence, the Quran frames the womb as a site of direct divine attention, where humans are formed in "threefold depths of darkness" (39:6). From the initial extraction of fluid to the breathing of the spirit, every phase is overseen by a Creator who claims exclusive knowledge of what remains hidden inside.
How are the stages of gestation described?
The text outlines both the physical toll on the mother and the biological formation of the child through distinct phases. Gestation begins subtly; a mother initially carries a "light burden" and continues "going about freely" before her condition changes and she "grows heavy" (7:189). Within her body, the child is not formed instantly but develops "in one stage after another" while shielded deep within "threefold depths of darkness" (39:6).
This process of creation starts from an "extract of underrated fluid" (32:8). Following this physical origin, the Creator moulds the child and breathes His Spirit into him, endowing the developing human with three specific faculties: hearing, sight, and minds (32:9). The timeline of these physical stages was analyzed closely by classical commentators to understand biological realities. Reflecting on the text's broader statements regarding weaning and gestation, scholars deduced the absolute boundaries of fetal viability; as noted in Al-Tafsir al-Mazhari (8/403), the shortest possible duration for a human pregnancy to result in a living child is six months.
What is hidden in the womb?
The unseen environment of the womb belongs strictly to the domain of divine omniscience. The Quran insists that "no female conceive or give birth" without God's explicit awareness (41:47). This oversight extends beyond the existence of the child to the precise anatomical changes of the mother. God knows exactly "how much their wombs shrink or swell," declaring that everything has its exact measure with Him (13:8). Commentators offer specific physiological interpretations of this shrinking and swelling. Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri writes (Aysar al-Tafasir, 3/11) that this refers to physical fluctuations that can either decrease or increase the duration of the pregnancy itself. Examining the same verse, al-Baghawi explains (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 4/298) that a decrease in the womb denotes a miscarriage, while an increase signifies the full and complete formation of the infant.
God asserts that "knowledge of what is hidden in the womb" belongs entirely to Him, categorizing it alongside unseen future events like the coming of the Hour, the falling of rain, and the land where a soul will die (31:34). He is aware of every individual from the moment they are produced from the earth and while they remain in their "hiding places in your mothers’ wombs" (53:32). Because of this profound vulnerability and dependence on the unseen, parents are described at the heaviest point of pregnancy turning to God, praying, "If You give us a good child we shall certainly be grateful" (7:189).
The period of pregnancy is therefore an act of total reliance on the One who dictates exactly what "comes out of its sheath" (41:47). Every life emerges solely because the Lord holds control, shaping a human mind and breathing His Spirit into the threefold darkness, followed by the pointed question: "How seldom you are grateful!" (32:9).

۞ هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَٰحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا ۖ فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّىٰهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلًا خَفِيفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهِۦ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَثْقَلَت دَّعَوَا ٱللَّهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَئِنْ ءَاتَيْتَنَا صَـٰلِحًا لَّنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ
It is He who created you all from one soul, and from it made its mate so that he might find comfort in her: when one [of them] lies with his wife and she conceives a light burden, going about freely, then grows heavy, they both pray to God, their Lord, ‘If You give us a good child we shall certainly be grateful,’
ٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَحْمِلُ كُلُّ أُنثَىٰ وَمَا تَغِيضُ ٱلْأَرْحَامُ وَمَا تَزْدَادُ ۖ وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ عِندَهُۥ بِمِقْدَارٍ
God knows what every female bears and how much their wombs shrink or swell- everything has its measure with Him;
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ ٱلْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلْأَرْحَامِ ۖ وَمَا تَدْرِى نَفْسٌ مَّاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَدًا ۖ وَمَا تَدْرِى نَفْسٌۢ بِأَىِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌۢ
Knowledge of the Hour [of Resurrection] belongs to God; it is He who sends down the relieving rain and He who knows what is hidden in the womb. No soul knows what it will reap tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die; it is God who is all knowing and all aware.
ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُۥ مِن سُلَـٰلَةٍ مِّن مَّآءٍ مَّهِينٍ
then made his descendants from an extract of underrated fluid.
ثُمَّ سَوَّىٰهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِۦ ۖ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ
Then He moulded him; He breathed from His Spirit into him; He gave you hearing, sight, and minds. How seldom you are grateful!
خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَٰحِدَةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَأَنزَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ ثَمَـٰنِيَةَ أَزْوَٰجٍ ۚ يَخْلُقُكُمْ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ خَلْقًا مِّنۢ بَعْدِ خَلْقٍ فِى ظُلُمَـٰتٍ ثَلَـٰثٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ لَهُ ٱلْمُلْكُ ۖ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُصْرَفُونَ
He created you all from a single being, from which He made its mate; He gave you four kinds of livestock in pairs; He creates you in your mothers’ wombs, in one stage after another, in threefold depths of darkness. Such is God, your Lord; He holds control, there is no god but Him. How can you turn away?
۞ إِلَيْهِ يُرَدُّ عِلْمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ ۚ وَمَا تَخْرُجُ مِن ثَمَرَٰتٍ مِّنْ أَكْمَامِهَا وَمَا تَحْمِلُ مِنْ أُنثَىٰ وَلَا تَضَعُ إِلَّا بِعِلْمِهِۦ ۚ وَيَوْمَ يُنَادِيهِمْ أَيْنَ شُرَكَآءِى قَالُوٓا۟ ءَاذَنَّـٰكَ مَا مِنَّا مِن شَهِيدٍ
Knowledge of the Hour belongs solely to Him and no crop comes out of its sheath, nor does any female conceive or give birth, without His knowledge. On the Day He asks them, ‘Where are My partners?’ they will answer, ‘We admit to You that none of us can see [them]’:
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
As for those who avoid grave sins and foul acts, though they may commit small sins, your Lord is ample in forgiveness. He has been aware of you from the time He produced you from the earth and from your hiding places in your mothers’ wombs, so do not assert your own goodness:He knows best who is mindful of Him.
