Drop

15 verses

The Quran repeatedly points to a single drop of fluid (nutfah) as the great equalizer of human existence. From this spilt-out essence, placed in a secure biological sanctuary, the architecture of a human being emerges. The text uses this microscopic beginning not merely as a biological statement, but as a theological challenge: a reminder of what a person is before they learn to speak, argue, or doubt. Commenting on the divine ability to bring the living from the dead, Ibn Abbas notes this continuous cycle, observing that God brings the living human from this lifeless drop, and extracts the lifeless drop from the living human (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 8/303).

How does the Quran describe the stages after the drop?

The nutfah is situated as the second stage in a chronological sequence, following the initial creation of humanity from dust or an essence of clay (23:12, 40:67). Once secured in a "safe place" (23:13), the fluid undergoes a highly specific series of transformations. It becomes a "clinging form," then a "lump of flesh" that is both "shaped and unshaped" (22:5). Ibn Kamal Basha details this physical transition, explaining that the white drop is altered gradually over time until it becomes a red clinging form (Tafsir Ibn Kamal Basha, 7/173). From that lump, bones are formed and clothed with flesh, eventually developing into another entirely distinct creation (23:14). This progression from dust to fluid to flesh culminates in an infant brought forth into the world, destined for maturity and eventually old age (40:67).

Why is the drop linked to human arrogance?

Across several chapters, the mention of the nutfah serves to puncture human pride. The Quran directly contrasts the frailty of a person's physical origin with their later capacity for arrogance. It asks how a man created from a mere drop of fluid can grow up to "openly challenge" or "dispute" his Creator (16:4, 36:77). In one narrative, a believer rebukes his boastful companion by asking how he could lose faith in the One who shaped him from dust and "a small drop of fluid" into a man (18:37). The stark shift from an ejected drop of sperm (53:46) to an articulate, combative adult is presented as irrefutable proof of God's capability. For those who doubt the Resurrection, the text points to this initial assembly as evidence: the God who constructs a human from a drop can just as easily rebuild them (22:5).

What does the drop determine about a person?

The differentiation of human biology is tethered directly to this initial fluid. The Quran specifies that God created the two sexes, male and female, "from an ejected drop of sperm" (53:45-46). This single drop is the pivotal point from which gender is established. Furthermore, the development of the drop into a human life operates under absolute divine oversight. No conception or birth occurs outside of His knowledge, and the ultimate lifespan of the resulting person—whether they die young, reach their appointed term, or live to an age where "they forget all they once knew"—is bound to a precise Record (22:5, 35:11).

The sequence of creation stands as a continuous demonstration of divine power over mere matter. The fluid that rests in the womb is kept there for an appointed time by God's choice alone, just as rain is sent down to swell lifeless earth into joyous growth (22:5). From an essence of clay down to a drop of spilt-out sperm (75:37), the physical form is entirely dependent on the One who shapes it, clothes its bones with flesh, and brings it forth to live its term.

16:4 An-Nahl

He created man from a drop of fluid, and yet man openly challenges Him.

18:37 Al-Kahf

His companion retorted, ‘Have you no faith in Him who created you from dust, from a small drop of fluid, then shaped you into a man?

22:5 Al-Hajj

People, [remember,] if you doubt the Resurrection, that We created you from dust, then a drop of fluid, then a clinging form, then a lump of flesh, both shaped and unshaped: We mean to make Our power clear to you. Whatever We choose We cause to remain in the womb for an appointed time, then We bring you forth as infants and then you grow and reach maturity. Some die young and some are left to live on to such an age that they forget all they once knew. You sometimes see the earth lifeless, yet when We send down water it stirs and swells and produces every kind of joyous growth:

23:12 Al-Mu'minun

We created man from an essence of clay,

23:13 Al-Mu'minun

then We placed him as a drop of fluid in a safe place,

23:14 Al-Mu'minun

then We made that drop into a clinging form, and We made that form into a lump of flesh, and We made that lump into bones, and We clothed those bones with flesh, and later We made him into other forms––glory be to God, the best of creators!––

35:11 Fatir

It is God who created you from dust and later from a drop of fluid; then He made you into two sexes; no female conceives or gives birth without His knowledge; no person grows old or has his life cut short, except in accordance with a Record: all this is easy for God.

36:77 Ya-Sin

Can man not see that We created him from a drop of fluid? Yet- lo and behold!- he disputes openly,

40:67 Ghafir

It is He who created you from dust, then from a drop of fluid, then from a tiny, clinging form, then He brought you forth as infants, then He allowed you to reach maturity, then He let you grow old- though some of you die sooner- and reach your appointed term so that you may reflect.

53:45 An-Najm

that He Himself created the two sexes, male and female,

53:46 An-Najm

from an ejected drop of sperm;

75:37 Al-Qiyamah

Was he not just a drop of spilt-out sperm,

75:39 Al-Qiyamah

fashioning from it the two sexes, male and female?

76:2 Al-Insan

We created man from a drop of mingled fluid to put him to the test; We gave him hearing and sight;

80:19 'Abasa

He creates him from a droplet, He proportions him,
