Nearness
القرب
10 verses
The Quran defines divine nearness not through physical distance, but through anatomy and arithmetic. God is described as closer to a human being than their own jugular vein (50:16), and present in any secret conversation as the uncounted participant—the fourth person among three, or the sixth among five (58:7). This proximity establishes a state of absolute awareness where nothing is hidden. While no human vision can take Him in, He takes in all vision as the All Subtle and All Aware (6:103).
How close is God to human thoughts and secrets?
The texts illustrate God's presence as immediate and inescapable, beginning at the level of internal human consciousness. Because He created humanity, God knows exactly what the human soul whispers to itself (50:16). This internal nearness—tighter than the essential blood vessels in a person's neck—is mirrored externally in social interactions. In private gatherings, regardless of the number of participants, God is explicitly present. He is the fourth when three people converse secretly, and the sixth when five speak in private, accompanying them wherever they may be on earth (58:7). Every action and conversation will ultimately be shown to them on the Day of Resurrection. Because everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him (4:126), this total awareness serves as a strict boundary. The Quran specifically commands believers not to behave like those who left their homes full of conceit, showing off to others and barring people from the way of God, reminding them that God has full knowledge of all their deeds (8:47).
Does God draw near during hardship and prayer?
The concept of divine nearness shifts from a state of total omniscience to a direct promise of intervention when individuals face trials or call out in prayer. When believers questioned the Prophet Muhammad about God's proximity, the revealed response bypasses the Prophet as an intermediary entirely: "[Prophet], if My servants ask you about Me, I am near" (2:186). This closeness is explicitly tied to action. God states that He responds to those who call Him, asking in return that they respond to Him and maintain their belief so they may be guided.
This nearness of response is especially critical during periods of severe trial. The Quran reminds believers that previous generations suffered such intense misfortune and hardship that they were completely shaken. Even the messengers and the believers alongside them cried out in desperation, "When will God's help arrive?" The text answers this historical despair with a permanent principle: "Truly, God's help is near" (2:214).
Where is God at the moment of death?
Human perception of proximity reaches its ultimate limit at the end of life. When a dying person's soul comes up to their throat, relatives and companions typically gather tightly around them, gazing helplessly at the process (56:83-84). To the gathered family watching the life leave their relative, the physical distance between them and the dying person is a matter of inches. Yet the Quran overrides this visual reality. At this exact threshold, the unseen divine presence supersedes the physical closeness of the family in the room, stating plainly to the onlookers: "We are nearer to him than you, though you do not see Us" (56:85).

[Prophet], if My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I respond to those who call Me, so let them respond to Me, and believe in Me, so that they may be guided.
Do you suppose that you will enter the Garden without first having suffered like those before you? They were afflicted by misfortune and hardship, and they were so shaken that even [their] messenger and the believers with him cried, ‘When will God’s help arrive?’ Truly, God’s help is near.
It is to God that everything in the heavens and earth belongs: God is fully aware of all things.
No vision can take Him in, but He takes in all vision. He is the All Subtle, the All Aware.
Do not be like those who came out of their homes full of conceit, showing off to people, and barring others from the way of God- God has full knowledge of all that they do.
We created man––We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein––
When the soul of a dying man comes up to his throat
while you gaze on-
We are nearer to him than you, though you do not see Us-
Do you not see [Prophet] that God knows everything in the heavens and earth? There is no secret conversation between three people where He is not the fourth, nor between five where He is not the sixth, nor between less or more than that without Him being with them, wherever they may be. On the Day of Resurrection, He will show them what they have done: God truly has full knowledge of everything.
