Alcohol

9 verses
Before the Quran instituted a categorical ban on intoxicating drinks, early Muslims lived in a society deeply attached to them. As Al-Baghawi notes (تفسير البغوي - إحياء التراث, 1/ 277), there was nothing the Arabs of that era loved more, and nothing proved harder for them to give up. Rather than outlawing it overnight, the Quran addressed alcohol through a deliberate sequence of verses, guiding a community from recognition of its harm to temporary restriction, and finally to total abstention.
How was alcohol prohibited?
According to Ibn Kathir (تفسير ابن كثير - ط ابن الجوزي, 3/ 463), the ruling on alcohol was revealed across three distinct verses. The first direct assessment responded to believers questioning the practice. The Quran acknowledged a duality in the substance, stating, "There is great sin in both, and some benefit for people: the sin is greater than the benefit" (2:219).
Later, a practical boundary was drawn around the daily prayers. Muslims were instructed not to come "anywhere near the prayer if you are intoxicated, not until you know what you are saying" (4:43). Because observant Muslims pray five times throughout the day, this severely limited when a person could consume alcohol without violating their religious obligations.
The final stage arrived with absolute terms. The Quran labels intoxicants, along with gambling and idolatry, as "repugnant acts- Satan’s doing" and commands believers to shun them (5:90). The reasoning provided is social and spiritual: Satan uses these tools to "incite enmity and hatred among you, and to stop you remembering God and prayer" (5:91). The revelation of this final, definitive ban prompted immediate anxiety among the living for the deceased; as Al-Zamakhshari records 1/ 676), the companions worried about the fate of their brothers who had died before the prohibition while still consuming alcohol.
Does the Quran mention wine outside of Islamic law?
Beyond establishing rulings, the Quran references the pressing and serving of wine as a historical and natural reality. In the story of Joseph, a fellow prisoner describes a dream where he is "pressing grapes." Joseph interprets this to mean the young man will survive and eventually "serve his master with wine" (12:36, 12:41).
On a broader scale, the raw materials used for these drinks are highlighted as natural blessings before human interference. The text notes that from the fruits of date palms and grapes, people take both "sweet juice and wholesome provisions," framing this agricultural cycle as a sign for those who use their reason (16:67).
What is the wine of Paradise?
While earthly intoxicants are banned for their capacity to breed hatred and cloud the mind, the Quran promises a purified equivalent in the hereafter. The Garden promised to the pious features not only rivers of water, fresh milk, and clarified honey, but "rivers of wine, a delight for those who drink" (47:15). This heavenly drink is entirely distinct from its earthly counterpart, offering joy without the loss of intellect or ritual purity, and believers are promised they will be served a "sealed nectar" (83:25).
This eternal provision is set in sharp contrast to the fate of those stuck in the Fire, who are instead given "boiling water to drink that tears their bowels" (47:15).

They ask you [Prophet] about intoxicants and gambling: say, ‘There is great sin in both, and some benefit for people: the sin is greater than the benefit.’ They ask you what they should give: say, ‘Give what you can spare.’ In this way, God makes His messages clear to you, so that you may reflect
You who believe, do not come anywhere near the prayer if you are intoxicated, not until you know what you are saying; nor if you are in a state of major ritual impurity- though you may pass through the mosque- not until you have bathed; if you are ill, on a journey, have relieved yourselves, or had intercourse, and cannot find any water, then find some clean sand and wipe your faces and hands with it. God is always ready to pardon and forgive.
You who believe, intoxicants and gambling, idolatrous practices, and [divining with] arrows are repugnant acts- Satan’s doing- shun them so that you may prosper.
With intoxicants and gambling, Satan seeks only to incite enmity and hatred among you, and to stop you remembering God and prayer. Will you not give them up?
Two young men went into prison alongside him. One of them said, ‘I dreamed that I was pressing grapes’; the other said, ‘I dreamed that I was carrying bread on my head and that the birds were eating it.’ [They said], ‘Tell us what this means- we can see that you are a knowledgeable man.’
Fellow prisoners, one of you will serve his master with wine; the other will be crucified and the birds will peck at his head. That is the end of the matter on which you asked my opinion.’
From the fruits of date palms and grapes you take sweet juice and wholesome provisions. There truly is a sign in this for people who use their reason.
Here is a picture of the Garden promised to the pious: rivers of water forever pure, rivers of milk forever fresh, rivers of wine, a delight for those who drink, rivers of honey clarified and pure, [all] flow in it; there they will find fruit of every kind; and they will find forgiveness from their Lord. How can this be compared to the fate of those stuck in the Fire, given boiling water to drink that tears their bowels?
They will be served a sealed nectar,
