Partition

In the Quran, a partition (hijab) is rarely just a physical curtain dividing a room; it acts as a decisive boundary where racing horses vanish into the distance (38:32), where mortal sight fails before the Divine, and where human minds seal themselves off from belief. The concept defines absolute limits—separating the seen from the unseen, the private from the public, and the believer from the denier.

Physical Screens and Domestic Boundaries

When describing physical space, the Quran uses partitions to establish seclusion and social propriety. When Mary withdrew from her family toward the east, she secluded herself away behind a screen, securing complete privacy just before God sent His Spirit to appear before her as a perfected man (19:16-17). The physical veil created a sanctuary apart from human intrusion.

In Madinah, the partition became a formal domestic boundary within the household of the Prophet. Believers were instructed that if they needed to ask his wives for an item, they were required to do so from behind a screen, an act the Quran describes as purer for the hearts of both parties (33:53). This injunction arrived alongside firm social regulations regarding the Prophet’s private space. Visitors were told not to enter his apartments for a meal without permission, nor to linger and talk after eating. The verse notes that such lingering offended the Prophet, but he shrank from asking them to leave, whereas God does not shrink from the truth. Abu Zayd al-Tha'alibi notes that this text served as a direct divine discipline for heavy, overstaying guests (Al-Jawahir al-Hisan, 4/356).

Invisible Barriers of the Heart

Beyond architecture, the Quran describes psychological and spiritual barriers that block human comprehension. A partition can be an imperceptible wall separating two conflicting states of the soul. During the Prophet's recitation of the Quran, God placed an invisible barrier between him and those who refused to believe in the life to come (17:45). They could hear the physical sounds of the recitation, but a divine veil prevented the meaning from penetrating their understanding.

The disbelievers themselves recognized and weaponized this cognitive wall. They openly declared to the Prophet that their hearts were encased against his faith and their ears heavy, asserting, "there is a barrier between us and you" (41:5). They used the reality of this partition to demand a complete separation of paths, telling him to do whatever he wanted, and they would do the same.

The Veil Between Creator and Mortal

The most absolute partition governs how God interacts with creation. The Quran establishes that the disparity between the Creator and the created is so vast that no mortal is granted direct, unveiled speech with God. He communicates exclusively through inspiration, by sending a messenger to reveal His command, or by speaking "from behind a veil" (42:51).

While this veil protects mortal limits in this world, in the hereafter, a partition becomes the ultimate deprivation. The definitive punishment for those who denied the truth is a permanent severing of sight and presence. On the Day of Judgment, the wrongdoers will find no proximity or audience, but will instead be strictly screened off from their Lord (83:15).
