Hijab

8 verses

The Arabic term hijab operates across the Quran as a boundary line—a physical curtain, an invisible spiritual wall, or a metaphysical screen separating two domains. Before becoming primarily associated with dress codes, the text utilized the concept to define the privacy of the Prophet’s home, the obstinacy of a closed heart, and the vast distance between humanity and the Divine.

How does God communicate with humanity?

God explicitly states that no mortal is granted direct speech with Him except through specific channels: through revelation, by sending a messenger, or "from behind a veil" (42:51). This veil preserves the majesty of the unseen Creator while allowing His command to bridge the gap to the physical world. The concept of a physical screen also precedes divine encounters on earth. When Mary withdrew from her family to a place in the east, she secluded herself away behind a physical barrier; only after she isolated herself did God send His Spirit to appear before her in the form of a perfected man (19:16–17).

How does the text describe spiritual and physical barriers?

Beyond domestic curtains, the Quran frequently deploys the idea of an invisible barrier to illustrate the divide created by disbelief. When the Prophet recited the Quran, an "invisible barrier" was actively placed between him and those who rejected the life to come (17:45). The disbelievers themselves recognized and boasted of this separation, declaring their hearts encased and their ears heavy, telling the Prophet that a distinct "barrier" stood between his call and them (41:5). The imagery of being swallowed behind a veil also appears in the narrative of Solomon, whose beloved horses were brought before him and ran until they finally disappeared entirely from his sight (38:32).

When was the screen mandated for the Prophet’s household?

The most direct legislative use of the term addresses the private living quarters of the Prophet. Believers are instructed not to enter his apartments for a meal without an invitation, nor to linger in conversation after eating, because such behavior offended him though he shrank from asking them to leave (33:53). If they needed to ask his wives for something, the men were commanded to do so "from behind a screen," a separation described as purer for the hearts of both parties.

The commentator Abu Zayd al-Tha'alibi notes (Al-Jawahir al-Hisan, 4/356) that the verse served as etiquette taught by God to correct burdensome guests, prompting the Prophet to literally draw a curtain to establish space. The revelation of this boundary was deeply anticipated by his companions; Ibn al-Jawzi records (Zad al-Masir, 3/479) that Umar had previously spotted the Prophet's wife Sawdah going out at night and called out to her, expressing a strong hope that a formal barrier of separation would be revealed to protect the household's privacy. The verse simultaneously cements a permanent boundary around the Prophet's wives, declaring it a grievous offense in God's eyes for any man to marry them after him (33:53).

While physical screens established order and respect within the early community, the text reserves its most severe application of a barrier for the hereafter. For those who insisted on keeping their hearts veiled from the truth in this life, the ultimate consequence is an impenetrable separation; on that Day, they will be screened off from their Lord (83:15).

17:45 Al-Isra

Mention in the Quran the story of Mary. She withdrew from her family to a place to the east

19:17 Maryam

and secluded herself away; We sent Our Spirit to appear before her in the form of a perfected man.

33:53 Al-Ahzab

Believers, do not enter the Prophet’s apartments for a meal unless you are given permission to do so; do not linger until [a meal] is ready. When you are invited, go in; then, when you have taken your meal, leave. Do not stay on and talk, for that would offend the Prophet, though he would shrink from asking you to leave. God does not shrink from the truth. When you ask his wives for something, do so from behind a screen: this is purer both for your hearts and for theirs. It is not right for you to offend God’s Messenger, just as you should never marry his wives after him: that would be grievous in God’s eyes.

38:32 Sad

he kept saying, ‘My love of fine things is part of my remembering my Lord!’ until [the horses] disappeared from sight-

41:5 Fussilat

They say, ‘Our hearts are encased against [the faith] you call us to; our ears are heavy; there is a barrier between us and you. So you do whatever you want, and so shall we.’

42:51 Ash-Shuraa

It is not granted to any mortal that God should speak to him except through revelation or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger to reveal by His command what He will: He is exalted and wise.

83:15 Al-Mutaffifin

No indeed! On that Day they will be screened off from their Lord,
