Bowing

The physical act of lowering the head marks a continuous thread of worship running from the sanctuary of Abraham to the followers of Muhammad. When God established the sacred House as a resort and sanctuary for people, He commanded Abraham and Ishmael to purify the spot where Abraham stood (2:125). This purification was ordered specifically for those who walk around the site, those who stay there, and those who physically bow and prostrate themselves in worship. This posture was not introduced to the final community in isolation but was tied to an ancient lineage of devotion. When Abraham was first shown the site of the House, the requirement to keep it pure and free of assigned partners was directly linked to accommodating those who stand, bow, and prostrate (22:26).

Who was commanded to bow? The instruction to lower the head in worship spans across different generations and figures. God directly instructs Mary to be devout to her Lord, to prostrate herself, and to "bow down with those who pray" (3:43). The Children of Israel are similarly addressed, told to keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and bow their heads alongside those who bow theirs (2:43). Al-Naysaburi notes (Ijaz al-Bayan, 1/90) that the explicit mention of bowing alongside the broader command to pray serves as a deliberate emphasis, pointing out that physical bowing was absent from the prayers of the People of the Book. Furthermore, he adds that it can denote a linguistic bowing—a state of profound internal submission. The repeated instruction to bow with those who bow establishes the action as a communal act, binding worshippers together in a shared posture of humility before their Creator.

How does bowing define the believers? Bowing operates as a defining characteristic of those allied with God. True allies of the believers are identified as God, His Messenger, and those who keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and bow down in worship (5:55). Ibn al-Jawzi records early commentary on this sequence, noting a view where the act of bowing in this context fuses the physical and the spiritual, indicating believers who maintain this state of submission even as they enact charity (Zad al-Masir, 1/561). The physical mechanics of bowing and prostrating are highly visible and serve as an outward metric of the community's devotion. Those who follow the Messenger are described as harsh toward disbelievers but compassionate toward one another, constantly seen kneeling and prostrating in pursuit of God’s bounty and good pleasure (48:29). This physical yielding fundamentally separates them from those who reject the message; a stark observation is made of those who, when told to "Bow down in prayer," simply refuse to do so (77:48).

To bow is to visibly enact the pursuit of divine reward. Believers are explicitly instructed to bow down, prostrate themselves, worship their Lord, and do good so that they may succeed (22:77). This continuous cycle of lowering the body and rising again, bearing the marks of prostration on their faces, is captured in the Torah and the Gospel through the image of a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises securely on its stem to the delight of its sowers (48:29).
