Disputing God’s messages without authority stems from a thirst for a greatness the human heart will never actually attain (40:56). In the Quranic worldview, boasting (التفاخر, al-tafakhur) is a spiritual blindness. It was this exact preoccupation with wealth and children that diverted the Quraysh from accepting the message, as noted in Al-Mawsu'ah al-Qur'aniyyah Khasais al-Suwar (12/ 147). This endless competition for status occupies people entirely until they die and enter their graves, an observation drawn from Al-Mukhtasar fi Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim (1/ 600). Consumed by this illusion, the boastful remain steeped in hostility (38:2).
Why do we boast?
The Quran identifies boasting as a fragile reaction to shifting worldly fortunes. When a person is touched by hardship and God subsequently grants them mercy, a common reaction is to declare that misfortune has permanently vanished, leaving the person exultant and boastful rather than grateful (11:10). This pride is tied to an unhealthy attachment to material outcomes. To cure this, believers are told not to grieve over what they miss, nor to gloat over what they gain (57:23).
Pride in sheer numbers or material advantage is repeatedly shown to be an illusion. During the Battle of Hunayn, the believers were well pleased with their large numbers, but this multitude proved useless; despite its spaciousness, the earth seemed to close in on them, and they turned tail and fled (9:25).
How does pride show in our behavior?
Arrogance physically manifests in how a person moves and interacts with others. The Quran strictly forbids turning one's nose up at people or walking about the earth arrogantly (31:18). It paints a stark picture of the rejecter who walks back to his people with a conceited swagger (75:33).
This physical haughtiness is the opposite of the social duty demanded of believers. True worship of God is paired directly with being good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, neighbors near and far, travelers, and slaves—immediately followed by the warning that God does not like arrogant, boastful people (4:36). To boast is to sever these communal ties, placing oneself above the very people one is commanded to serve.
Where does arrogance lead?
When confronted with the truth, a boastful person's arrogance drives them further into transgression. When told to "Beware of God," this pride acts as a barrier, leading them directly into sin (2:206). In their hearts, they harbor the "fury of ignorance," a stark contrast to the tranquility God sends down upon His Messenger and the believers (48:26).
By turning scornfully aside, the boastful person not only damages their own soul but leads others away from God's path. Disgrace in this world awaits such a person, and on the Day of Resurrection, they will be made to taste the suffering of the Fire (22:9).

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُ ٱتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ أَخَذَتْهُ ٱلْعِزَّةُ بِٱلْإِثْمِ ۚ فَحَسْبُهُۥ جَهَنَّمُ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ ٱلْمِهَادُ
When he is told, ‘Beware of God,’ his arrogance leads him to sin. Hell is enough for him: a dreadful resting place.
۞ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَيْـًٔا ۖ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـٰنًا وَبِذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلْجَارِ ذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْجَارِ ٱلْجُنُبِ وَٱلصَّاحِبِ بِٱلْجَنۢبِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ مُخْتَالًا فَخُورًا
Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,
لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ۙ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ
God has helped you [believers] on many battlefields, even on the day of the Battle of Hunayn. You were well pleased with your large numbers, but they were of no use to you: the earth seemed to close in on you despite its spaciousness, and you turned tail and fled.
وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَـٰهُ نَعْمَآءَ بَعْدَ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ ذَهَبَ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتُ عَنِّىٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَفَرِحٌ فَخُورٌ
And if We let him taste mercy after some harm has touched him, he is sure to say, ‘Misfortune has gone away from me.’ He becomes exultant and boastful.
ثَانِىَ عِطْفِهِۦ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ لَهُۥ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا خِزْىٌ ۖ وَنُذِيقُهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ عَذَابَ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
turning scornfully aside to lead others away from God’s path. Disgrace in this world awaits such a person and, on the Day of Resurrection, We shall make him taste the suffering of the Fire.
وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ
Do not turn your nose up at people, nor walk about the place arrogantly, for God does not love arrogant or boastful people.
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى عِزَّةٍ وَشِقَاقٍ
Yet the disbelievers are steeped in arrogance and hostility.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَـٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمْ ۙ إِن فِى صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَـٰلِغِيهِ ۚ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ
As for those who, with no authority to do so, dispute God’s messages, there is nothing in their hearts but a thirst for a greatness they will never attain. Seek refuge in God, for He is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.
إِذْ جَعَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلْحَمِيَّةَ حَمِيَّةَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِيَّةِ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَلْزَمَهُمْ كَلِمَةَ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَكَانُوٓا۟ أَحَقَّ بِهَا وَأَهْلَهَا ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمًا
While the disbelievers had fury in their hearts- the fury of ignorance- God sent His tranquillity down on to His Messenger and the believers and made binding on them [their] promise to obey God, for that was more appropriate and fitting for them. God has full knowledge of all things.
لِّكَيْلَا تَأْسَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَاتَكُمْ وَلَا تَفْرَحُوا۟ بِمَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ
so you need not grieve for what you miss or gloat over what you gain. God does not love the conceited, the boastful,
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ
walking back to his people with a conceited swagger.
