those righteous
15 verses
The exclamation that introduces the Companions of the Right anchors their identity in sheer wonder. Twice in a single sequence, the text pauses to marvel at their condition, asking, "Those on the Right––what people they are!" (56:8, 56:27). This repetition frames their ultimate destination as an astonishing reality. The verses immediately following this dual exclamation do not list their earthly deeds or the trials they survived; instead, the focus shifts entirely to the physical and social peace of their final environment. The picture painted is one of complete natural sanctuary, elevating the most prized elements of the natural world while stripping away every trace of danger or scarcity.
What is the natural environment of the Right?
The habitat designed for these individuals replaces the hostile elements of nature with absolute, uninterrupted comfort. They are placed in an environment where they dwell among "thornless lote trees" (56:28). This specific botanical detail alters a familiar, naturally defensive desert plant, stripping it of its sharp points to ensure that interaction with the surroundings brings no harm or pain. Alongside these safe trees grow "clustered acacia" (56:29), a visual indicating dense, heavy blooms or vegetation that signify thriving, abundant life.
To shelter the inhabitants, the environment casts a "spreading shade" (56:30). Rather than a fleeting or narrow shadow that disappears with the moving sun, this canopy is expansive and permanent, offering constant relief. Beneath this shelter lies "constantly flowing water" (56:31), an image of endless, effortless nourishment that requires no labor to draw, store, or protect. It is a landscape engineered for perpetual ease, entirely removing the harshness of the sun and the anxiety of drought.
How is their provision described?
The sustenance provided in this resting place is characterized by its sheer volume and absolute accessibility. The residents find themselves surrounded by "abundant fruits" (56:32), but the text places its heaviest emphasis on the permanent nature of this harvest. These fruits are explicitly described with two defining traits: "unfailing, unforbidden" (56:33).
The term "unfailing" indicates a complete absence of agricultural cycles; there are no seasons of scarcity, no winter die-offs, no crop failures, and no decay. The supply is continuous and entirely reliable. Simultaneously, "unforbidden" removes all boundaries, physical barriers, or ownership restrictions. There is no concept of rationing, trespassing, or waiting for permission. The provision is not merely endless in quantity, but it is freely available to be consumed at any moment without consequence, labor, or limitation.
Who do they share this space with?
Beyond the botanical landscape and endless sustenance, the social environment is completed by the presence of "incomparable companions" (56:34). These companions are not bound by the standard biology or history of human existence; the text specifies that they are a unique manifestation, declaring that "We have specially created––" (56:35) them for this exact reality. They are introduced as "virginal" (56:36), presenting an existence untouched by prior sorrow, aging, or worldly complications.
Their emotional and social disposition is entirely harmonious, described directly as "loving" (56:37). This guarantees that relationships within this space are completely free of friction, resentment, or misunderstanding. Furthermore, they are "of matching age" (56:37), establishing a dynamic of pure peer companionship. This specific trait removes generational divides, hierarchies, or power imbalances, resulting in an atmosphere anchored in mutual affection and permanent youth.
Every element designed for those on the Right systematically dismantles the anxieties of mortal life. The physical surroundings offer shelter without thorns and rivers that never dry, while the social reality is populated by loving peers. They remain in an estate defined entirely by what is thriving and accessible, dwelling endlessly amid clustered acacia and spreading shade, where the harvest is unfailing and unforbidden.
