Approach

26 verses
When the Quran speaks of the approaching Reckoning, classical scholars note the immense weight of the word. Muhammad Abu Zahra explains that this concept of approach signifies the absolute certainty of its occurrence (Zahrat al-Tafasir, 9/4825), while Abu al-Sa'ud connects it to the looming onset of the Hour and its terrible conditions (Tafsir Abi al-Sa'ud, 6/53). This urgency carries over into the way human beings physically and morally navigate daily boundaries. God sets clear limits, and the command is frequently not just to abstain from a sin, but to avoid drawing anywhere near it.
The Buffer of Divine Limits The very first prohibition given to humanity was a matter of physical proximity. God allowed Adam and his wife to eat freely in the Garden, but warned them, "do not go near this tree, or you will both become wrongdoers" (2:35, 7:19). This principle of a spatial buffer applies directly to major earthly transgressions. Believers are commanded to stay well away from committing obscenities, whether in secret or out in the open, and are told not to kill their children in fear of poverty (6:151). The same strict boundary protects the vulnerable; the property of orphans must not be approached except with the best intentions until they come of age (6:152). Boundaries also define sacred time. During the nights of the fast, believers may eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black, but when engaging in devotional retreats in the mosques, marital intimacy is suspended. These restrictions are declared as "the bounds set by God, so do not go near them" (2:187).
Purity in Proximity Drawing near to sacred acts or marital relations requires a strict state of cleansing. Spousal intimacy is fundamentally framed as profound closeness, with husbands and wives described as garments to one another (2:187). Yet, this closeness pauses during menstruation, described as a painful condition where husbands are told, "Do not approach them until they are cleansed" (2:222). Once cleansed, they may approach as God ordained, treating their wives as fields to go into while sending something good ahead for themselves (2:223).
Worship itself demands physical readiness and sobriety. Believers are explicitly commanded not to come anywhere near the prayer if intoxicated, having to wait until they know exactly what they are saying; nor can they approach if they are in a state of major ritual impurity—though they may pass through the mosque—until they have bathed (4:43). If they are ill, on a journey, have relieved themselves, or had intercourse, and cannot find water, they must find clean sand to wipe their faces and hands. Sacred spaces are similarly protected by these rules of approach. Because polytheism renders a person spiritually unclean, those who ascribe partners to God are forbidden from coming near the Sacred Mosque (9:28). Ultimately, true proximity to God is realized in worship, a pairing observed by Bint al-Shati (Al-Tafsir al-Bayani, 2/35), who points out that drawing near is directly coupled with the physical act of prostration.
Hostile Approaches While believers must guard how they approach God's limits, they must also defend against what approaches them. Satan outlines a strategy of total envelopment to cultivate human ingratitude, vowing, "I will come at them- from their front and their back, from their right and their left" (7:17). Misdirected human approach is equally condemned as a severe transgression of bounds, as seen when Lot's people lusted after men rather than women (7:81).
The primary defense against these corrupting forces lies in continuous observance. The believer is instructed to keep up the prayer at both ends of the day, and during parts of the night, for good things drive bad away—this is a reminder for those who are aware (11:114).

We said, ‘Adam, live with your wife in this garden. Both of you eat freely there as you will, but do not go near this tree, or you will both become wrongdoers.’
You [believers] are permitted to lie with your wives during the night of the fast: they are [close] as garments to you, as you are to them. God was aware that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy and pardoned you: now you can lie with them- seek what God has ordained for you- eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black. Then fast until nightfall. Do not lie with them during the nights of your devotional retreat in the mosques: these are the bounds set by God, so do not go near them. In this way God makes His messages clear to people, that they may guard themselves against doing wrong.
They ask you [Prophet] about menstruation. Say, ‘Menstruation is a painful condition, so keep away from women during it. Do not approach them until they are cleansed; when they are cleansed, you may approach them as God has ordained. God loves those who turn to Him, and He loves those who keep themselves clean.
Your wives are your fields, so go into your fields whichever way you like, and send [something good] ahead for yourselves. Be mindful of God: remember that you will meet Him.’ [Prophet], give good news to the believers.
You who believe, do not come anywhere near the prayer if you are intoxicated, not until you know what you are saying; nor if you are in a state of major ritual impurity- though you may pass through the mosque- not until you have bathed; if you are ill, on a journey, have relieved yourselves, or had intercourse, and cannot find any water, then find some clean sand and wipe your faces and hands with it. God is always ready to pardon and forgive.
Say, ‘Come! I will tell you what your Lord has really forbidden you. Do not ascribe anything as a partner to Him; be good to your parents; do not kill your children in fear of poverty’- We will provide for you and for them- ‘ stay well away from committing obscenities, whether openly or in secret; do not take the life God has made sacred, except by right. This is what He commands you to do: perhaps you will use your reason.
Stay well away from the property of orphans, except with the best [intentions], until they come of age; give full measure and weight, according to justice’- We do not burden any soul with more than it can bear- ‘ when you speak, be just, even if it concerns a relative; keep any promises you make in God’s name. This is what He commands you to do, so that you may take heed’-
I will come at them- from their front and their back, from their right and their left- and You will find that most of them are ungrateful.’
But you and your wife, Adam, live in the Garden. Both of you eat whatever you like, but do not go near this tree or you will become wrongdoers.’
You lust after men rather than women! You transgress all bounds!’
Believers, those who ascribe partners to God are truly unclean: do not let them come near the Sacred Mosque after this year. If you are afraid you may become poor, [bear in mind that] God will enrich you out of His bounty if He pleases: God is all knowing and wise.
[Prophet], keep up the prayer at both ends of the day, and during parts of the night, for good things drive bad away- this is a reminder for those who are aware.
You will have no more corn from me if you do not bring him to me, and you will not be permitted to approach me.’
And do not go anywhere near adultery: it is an outrage, and an evil path.
Do not go near the orphan’s property, except with the best [intentions], until he reaches the age of maturity. Honour your pledges: you will be questioned about your pledges.
with frivolous hearts. The evildoers conferred in secret: ‘Is this man anything but a mortal like yourselves? Are you going to fall under his spell with your eyes wide open?’
But the deeds of those who disbelieve are like a mirage in a desert: the thirsty person thinks there will be water but, when he gets there, he finds only God, who pays him his account in full- God is swift in reckoning.
Must you, unlike [other] people, lust after males
How can you lust after men instead of women? What fools you are!’
Throw down your staff.’ When he saw his staff moving like a snake, he fled in fear and would not return. Again [he was called]: ‘Moses! Draw near! Do not be afraid, for you are one of those who are safe.
How can you lust after men, waylay travellers, and commit evil in your gatherings?’ the only answer his people gave was, ‘Bring God’s punishment down on us, if what you say is true.’
and they will turn on one another accusingly.
They will turn to one another with questions:
which falsehood cannot touch from any angle, a Revelation sent down from the Wise One, Worthy of All Praise-
so why did their gods not help them, those they set up as gods besides God to bring them nearer to Him? No indeed! They failed them utterly: it was all a lie of their own making.
They turn to one another and say,
