The first recorded oath of sincere counsel in the Quran is a deception. Seeking to trick Adam and Eve, Satan swore to them, ‘I am giving you sincere advice’ (7:21). Yet this exact concept of sincere counsel—nush—becomes the defining defense of the prophets when their nations accuse them of madness or error. When the people of Noah tell him he is astray, he counters that he knows things from God they do not, stating, ‘I am delivering my Lord’s messages to you and giving you sincere advice’ (7:62).

How do the prophets advise their people?

Across the seventh chapter of the Quran, the messengers pair the strict transmission of revelation with the posture of a sincere advisor. When Hud is called foolish by his people, he does not merely claim prophetic authority; he grounds his relationship with them in trust, replying, ‘I am your sincere and honest adviser’ (7:68).

This role requires absolute selflessness. Analyzing the linguistic structure of these declarations, Ibn Ashur notes (Al-Tahrir wa'l-Tanwir, 8-b/ 194) that the Arabic phrasing often attaches a specific preposition (lam) to the act of advising. This grammatical choice indicates exclusivity—it demonstrates that the advisor intends solely the good of the person being advised, without seeking to bring any benefit or material gain to themselves.

Because their counsel was free of personal ambition, the prophets persisted even as they faced severe hostility. Their genuine attachment to their people made the rejection painful. After the destruction of his nation, Shu'ayb turns away, remarking that he had delivered God's messages and given sincere advice, finally asking himself, ‘why should I grieve for people who refused to believe?’ (7:93).

Can advice alter a person's fate?

The Quran shows that practical, urgent advice can save a life when it is heeded. Moses benefited from an unnamed man who came running from the furthest part of the city to warn him that the authorities were plotting his assassination. The man urged him, ‘leave- this is my sincere advice’ (28:20), prompting Moses to flee safely to Midian.

However, spiritual counsel has strict limitations. Even a prophet's dedication cannot force belief or redirect a heart that insists on rejection. Noah ultimately warns his defiant nation that his own earnest efforts are bound by divine will: ‘My advice will be no use to you if God wishes to leave you to your delusions: He is your Lord and to Him you will be returned’ (11:34).

The act of advising is an attempt to mend a flaw in another, a difficult dynamic for human pride to accept. As Isma'il Haqqi records (Ruh al-Bayan, 10/ 62), classical scholars likened the meticulous action of an advisor seeking the betterment of the advised to the careful mending of torn fabric. People frequently resent having their flaws pointed out, preferring the comfort of their current state. This resistance forms the tragedy of the ruined nations, cemented in Salih's parting words to his destroyed people: ‘I delivered my Lord’s messages to you and gave you sincere advice, but you did not like those who gave sincere advice’ (7:79).
