John the Baptist

The announcement of John arrived while his father Zachariah stood praying in the sanctuary. The elderly man had just petitioned his Lord for an heir, asking specifically for a gift from God's grace: "grant me virtuous offspring: You hear every prayer" (3:38). The angels answered this supplication immediately, calling out to him where he stood. They delivered the news of a son who would grow to confirm a Word from God, explicitly describing the future child as noble, chaste, and a prophet among the righteous (3:39). Adding to the distinction of this miraculous birth, God declared that He had personally selected the boy's name, informing Zachariah, "We have chosen this name for no one before him" (19:7).
How did Zachariah receive the promise?
Despite having just prayed for virtuous offspring, Zachariah met the angelic announcement with shock. He questioned the physical mechanics of the promise, asking his Lord how fathering a son was possible given that his wife was barren and his own body had grown old and frail (3:40, 19:8). An angel affirmed that God simply does whatever He will (3:40). The divine response entirely bypassed biological limitations by pointing to the original act of human existence: "This is what your Lord has said: 'It is easy for Me: I created you, though you were nothing before'" (19:9).
Still processing the reality of the impending birth, Zachariah asked his Lord for a sign to anchor his understanding. He was informed that his sign would be a period of enforced silence; he would lose the physical ability to speak to anyone for three full days and nights (19:10). When he eventually emerged from the sanctuary to face his community, he could not vocalize the news of his future son. Instead, he communicated entirely through gestures, signaling to his people to continue praising God morning and evening (19:11).
What qualities marked his life?
The Quranic description of John focuses heavily on his spiritual disposition and early maturity. He is grouped in a wider lineage of righteous men—alongside his father Zachariah, Jesus, Elijah, Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah, and Lot—whom God explicitly favored over other people (6:85-86). Yet John's individual portrait remains intensely centered on his youth. He did not have to wait for the traditional age of adulthood to receive spiritual insight, as God intervened to grant him wisdom while he was still a boy (19:12).
His temperament was shaped by specific attributes bestowed directly by his Creator. Alongside his early wisdom, he was granted tenderness from God, as well as a deep purity and a profoundly devout nature (19:13). These traits fulfilled the angels' earlier promise that he would live as a noble and chaste prophet (3:39).
These internal qualities of tenderness and purity were paired with a strict, unyielding commitment to divine revelation. The text anchors his prophetic mission not in a detailed account of his later ministry, but in a direct instruction delivered to him in his youth. Endowed with early wisdom and devoutness, he was simply commanded, "John, hold on to the Scripture firmly" (19:12).

هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُۥ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبْ لِى مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ ٱلدُّعَآءِ
There and then Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, ‘Lord, from Your grace grant me virtuous offspring: You hear every prayer.’
فَنَادَتْهُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَهُوَ قَآئِمٌ يُصَلِّى فِى ٱلْمِحْرَابِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحْيَىٰ مُصَدِّقًۢا بِكَلِمَةٍ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَسَيِّدًا وَحَصُورًا وَنَبِيًّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
The angels called out to him, while he stood praying in the sanctuary, ‘God gives you news of John, confirming a Word from God. He will be noble and chaste, a prophet, one of the righteous.’
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِى غُلَـٰمٌ وَقَدْ بَلَغَنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ وَٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرٌ ۖ قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱللَّهُ يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَآءُ
He said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a son when I am so old and my wife is barren?’ [An angel] said, ‘It will be so: God does whatever He will.’
وَزَكَرِيَّا وَيَحْيَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَإِلْيَاسَ ۖ كُلٌّ مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
Zachariah, John, Jesus, and Elijah- every one of them was righteous-
وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَٱلْيَسَعَ وَيُونُسَ وَلُوطًا ۚ وَكُلًّا فَضَّلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah, and Lot. We favoured each one of them over other people,
يَـٰزَكَرِيَّآ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ ٱسْمُهُۥ يَحْيَىٰ لَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا
‘Zachariah, We bring you good news of a son whose name will be John––We have chosen this name for no one before him.’
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِى غُلَـٰمٌ وَكَانَتِ ٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرًا وَقَدْ بَلَغْتُ مِنَ ٱلْكِبَرِ عِتِيًّا
He said, ‘Lord, how can I have a son when my wife is barren, and I am old and frail?’
قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ قَالَ رَبُّكَ هُوَ عَلَىَّ هَيِّنٌ وَقَدْ خَلَقْتُكَ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ تَكُ شَيْـًٔا
He said, ‘This is what your Lord has said: “It is easy for Me: I created you, though you were nothing before.” ’
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجْعَل لِّىٓ ءَايَةً ۚ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَـٰثَ لَيَالٍ سَوِيًّا
He said, ‘Give me a sign, Lord.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to anyone for three full [days and] nights.’
فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلْمِحْرَابِ فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِمْ أَن سَبِّحُوا۟ بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا
He went out of the sanctuary to his people and signalled to them to praise God morning and evening.
يَـٰيَحْيَىٰ خُذِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ بِقُوَّةٍ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْحُكْمَ صَبِيًّا
[We said], ‘John, hold on to the Scripture firmly.’ While he was still a boy, We granted him wisdom,
وَحَنَانًا مِّن لَّدُنَّا وَزَكَوٰةً ۖ وَكَانَ تَقِيًّا
tenderness from Us, and purity. He was devout,
وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ وَلَمْ يَكُن جَبَّارًا عَصِيًّا
kind to his parents, not domineering or rebellious.
وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمَ وُلِدَ وَيَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّا
Peace was on him the day he was born, the day he died, and it will be on him the day he is raised to life again.
فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥ يَحْيَىٰ وَأَصْلَحْنَا لَهُۥ زَوْجَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًا وَرَهَبًا ۖ وَكَانُوا۟ لَنَا خَـٰشِعِينَ
We answered him––We gave him John, and cured his wife of barrenness- they were always keen to do good deeds. They called upon Us out of longing and awe, and humbled themselves before Us.
