Wave

In the Quran, the image of a wave frequently serves as a sudden equalizer, stripping away human arrogance in the face of nature’s raw power. When ships sail on calm seas, passengers rejoice in a favorable wind, but the sudden arrival of waves from all sides reduces them to absolute vulnerability, leaving them certain there is no escape (10:22). The same waters that allow ships to plow their course so people can seek God’s bounty and extract fresh fish and ornaments (35:12) can transform instantly into an inescapable force. In these moments, the physical weight of water crashing over a vessel brings an immediate recognition of human dependence on the Creator.
Why do waves make people pray sincerely? When passengers are caught in a violent storm, the text describes waves looming over those on board like giant shadows (31:32). Surrounded by walls of water, their reaction is immediate: they call out to God, dedicating their religion entirely to Him. All reliance on worldly power vanishes as they profess sincere devotion, promising that if they are saved from this terror, they will be truly thankful (10:22). Yet, the narrative highlights a stark human inconsistency. Once God has delivered them safely back to dry land, this intense spiritual clarity dissipates. Some begin to waver in their faith, a reversion that the Quran states is the mark of a treacherous, thankless person who refuses to acknowledge divine signs (31:32).
How are waves described in the flood of Noah? During the great deluge, the Ark carried its passengers on waters that swelled into waves towering like mountains (11:42). The staggering scale of these waves forms the backdrop for the final, desperate exchange between Noah and his son. As the water rises, Noah calls out, urging his son to come aboard and not remain with the disbelievers. Trusting in the physical earth rather than divine decree, the son insists he will seek refuge on a mountain to escape the flood. Noah warns him that on that specific day, there is no refuge from God’s command except for those who receive His mercy. The argument is ended not by words, but by the water itself; the waves physically cut them off from each other, and the son is drowned among those left behind (11:43).
What do waves symbolize beyond the physical ocean? Beyond literal storms, the crushing weight and obscurity of a turbulent sea are used to illustrate intense spiritual blindness. The internal state of someone without faith is compared to shadows trapped within a deep sea, covered by wave upon wave, with thick clouds pressing down from above (24:40). These stacked layers of darkness are so suffocating that if a person holds out their own hand, they are scarcely able to see it. The chaotic, overlapping movement of water also serves as a vision of the end of times. Before the Trumpet is blown to gather all of humanity together, the Quran warns that people will be left to surge against one another like crashing waves (18:99).
The ocean is a source of life where two bodies of water—one sweet and pleasant, the other salty and bitter—exist side by side for human benefit (35:12). Yet it remains a domain where human control is an illusion. To be caught in the deep, buried beneath wave upon wave with storm clouds sealing the sky above, is to be enveloped in a darkness where a person to whom God gives no light has no light at all (24:40).

It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are sailing on ships and rejoicing in the favouring wind, a storm arrives: waves come at those on board from all sides and they feel there is no escape. Then they pray to God, professing sincere devotion to Him, ‘If You save us from this we shall be truly thankful.’
It sailed with them on waves like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who stayed behind, ‘Come aboard with us, my son, do not stay with the disbelievers.’
But he replied, ‘I will seek refuge on a mountain to save me from the water.’ Noah said, ‘Today there is no refuge from God’s command, except for those on whom He has mercy.’ The waves cut them off from each other and he was among the drowned.
On that Day, We shall let them surge against each other like waves and then the Trumpet will be blown and We shall gather them all together.
Or like shadows in a deep sea covered by wave upon wave, with clouds above- layer upon layer of darkness- if he holds out his hand, he is scarcely able to see it. The one to whom God gives no light has no light at all.
When the waves loom over those on board like giant shadows they call out to God, devoting their religion entirely to Him. But, when He has delivered them safely to land, some of them waver- only a treacherous, thankless person refuses to acknowledge Our signs.
The two bodies of water are not alike- one is palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink, the other salty and bitter- yet from each you eat fresh fish and extract ornaments to wear, and in each you see the ships ploughing their course so that you may seek God’s bounty and be grateful.
