Universe Motion
حركة الكون
6 verses
If the heavens and the earth were to begin vanishing, no force apart from God could arrest their collapse (35:41). The physical universe is not a self-sustaining machine left to run indefinitely on its own momentum; it requires direct, continuous maintenance to exist from one moment to the next. Tracing the movement of this precise, harmonious design from beginning to end reveals the constant hand of divine power maintaining its structure (Wazifat al-Sura al-Fanniyya fi al-Quran, 218). The Quran frames the physical operation of the cosmos—its endurance, its orbits, its very stability—as a deliberate act of preservation. The fact that the physical realm holds together at all is tied to God being most forbearing and most forgiving, allowing creation the time to exist and function (35:41).
What drives the physical cycles? Four separate verses emphasize that the creation and operation of the heavens and the earth are bound to a "true purpose" (44:39, 45:22, 46:3, 64:3). This cosmic movement is not an accident of physics devoid of meaning. Al-Sha'rawi notes that God intends a "movement of peace" within the universe, insulating its massive physical operations from the erratic nature of human desires that would otherwise corrupt the natural order (Tafsir al-Sha'rawi, 8/ 5072). We observe this purposeful, rhythmic movement in phenomena like the sky and its recurring rain (86:11), acting in a precise, repeating cycle that serves life on earth. Yet, despite being constantly immersed in these deliberate physical motions, most people fail to comprehend the underlying intent behind the environment that sustains them (44:39).
Is the cosmic order permanent? The continuous motion and maintenance of the universe carry a strict expiration date. The heavens, the earth, and everything operating between them were established for a "specific term" (46:3). Their cycles of movement will not repeat forever. The reality that God actively keeps the heavens and earth from vanishing (35:41) demonstrates that their natural disposition is not eternal permanence; rather, their stability is a temporary reprieve granted for a set duration. Those who deny the truth consistently ignore the warning implicit in this finite timeline (46:3), mistakenly treating the physical world and its returning seasons as an indestructible, permanent fixture.
How does the cosmos serve human accountability? The massive, moving machinery of the heavens and the earth operates specifically to facilitate moral consequence. The physical universe exists for a true purpose: so that each soul can eventually be rewarded according to its deeds, ensuring no individual is wronged (45:22). The environment humans inhabit is a temporary testing ground carefully calibrated for their actions. God shaped human beings, made their physical forms good, and set them within this active, temporary cosmos because they will all ultimately return to Him (64:3). The physical forms of humanity and the physical structure of the universe are both deliberately crafted stages in a much larger trajectory.
The movement of the cosmos is entirely tethered to the human moral timeline. The physical laws governing the sky and its recurring rain (86:11) function solely to give humanity the duration it needs to act, before the specific term concludes. When that term is finally reached, the heavens and the earth will have fulfilled their true purpose, ending their cycles to reward each soul according to its deeds, ensuring they will not be wronged (45:22).

It was for a true purpose and a specific term that We created heaven and earth and everything in between, yet those who deny the truth ignore the warning they have been given.
