10 verses

The boundary between fair commerce and exploitation is sharply drawn in the Quran's treatment of wealth. Financial exchange relies on a single, binding condition: to "trade by mutual consent" without wrongfully consuming another's property or bringing lethal harm upon one another (4:29). While daily business is expected—Ibn Nur al-Din points out that pilgrims may even carry trade goods during Hajj without censure as they seek God's bounty (تيسير البيان لأحكام القرآن, 1/ 355)—the accumulation of profit is strictly bound by ethical and spiritual restrictions.

How does the Quran regulate business contracts?

The foundational rule of Islamic commerce is the absolute prohibition of usury. The Quran refutes those who claim "Trade and usury are the same," declaring that God permits trade but forbids usurious interest (2:275). Those who insist on taking usury are described as rising on the Day of Resurrection like someone tormented by Satan’s touch. Those who heed the warning and stop may keep their past gains, leaving their judgment to God, but those who revert to the practice become inhabitants of the Fire (2:275).

To protect lawful commerce from doubt, debts contracted for a stated term must be put in writing (2:282). A scribe must record the terms justly as the debtor dictates, fearing God enough to not diminish the amount. Two men must act as witnesses; if two men are not available, one man and two approved women are called, so if one woman forgets, the other can remind her. An exception exists for immediate retail: if merchandise is present and handed over on the spot, there is no blame in skipping the written contract, though having witnesses during the exchange is still instructed, and neither scribes nor witnesses may be harmed (2:282).

When does commerce become a distraction?

Worldly commerce constantly threatens to pull human attention away from the divine. Al-Baghawi notes that trade is specifically singled out in the text because it is the most powerful force diverting people from prayer and obedience This tension is visible when the Quran reprimands believers who scatter toward trade or entertainment, leaving the Prophet standing alone, reminding them that God’s gift is better than any commerce and that He is the best provider (62:11).

The ultimate test of a merchant's character lies in their priorities. The text warns that if the "trade which you fear will decline" becomes dearer than God, His Messenger, and striving in His cause, believers must wait for God to bring about His punishment (9:24). True success belongs to men in houses of worship who celebrate God's glory morning and evening—individuals not distracted by commerce or profit from remembering God, maintaining prayer, and paying prescribed alms, driven by the fear of a day when hearts and eyes will turn over (24:36-37).

What is the ultimate spiritual bargain?

Beyond the marketplace, the Quran frequently frames salvation itself as a commercial transaction. Those who reject truth are described as having "bought error in exchange for guidance," meaning their trade reaps no profit (2:16). Commenting on this loss, Ibn Kamal Pasha observes that they lost their way to the path of true trade, expressing astonishment at the sheer scale of their ruin

In contrast, God directly offers a "bargain that will save you from painful torment" (61:10). The currency of this higher commerce is not gold or merchandise, but devotion. Those who recite scripture, maintain their prayers, and give secretly and openly from their provisions are investing in a trade that will never decline (35:29).

2:16 Al-Baqarah

They have bought error in exchange for guidance, so their trade reaps no profit, and they are not rightly guided.

2:275 Al-Baqarah

But those who take usury will rise up on the Day of Resurrection like someone tormented by Satan’s touch. That is because they say, ‘Trade and usury are the same,’ but God has allowed trade and forbidden usury. Whoever, on receiving God’s warning, stops taking usury may keep his past gains- God will be his judge- but whoever goes back to usury will be an inhabitant of the Fire, there to remain.

2:282 Al-Baqarah

You who believe, when you contract a debt for a stated term, put it down in writing: have a scribe write it down justly between you. No scribe should refuse to write: let him write as God has taught him, let the debtor dictate, and let him fear God, his Lord, and not diminish [the debt] at all. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate, then let his guardian dictate justly. Call in two men as witnesses. If two men are not there, then call one man and two women out of those you approve as witnesses, so that if one of the two women should forget the other can remind her. Let the witnesses not refuse when they are summoned. Do not disdain to write the debt down, be it small or large, along with the time it falls due: this way is more equitable in God’s eyes, more reliable as testimony, and more likely to prevent doubts arising between you. But if the merchandise is there and you hand it over, there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses present whenever you trade with one another, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness, for if you did cause them harm, it would be a crime on your part. Be mindful of God, and He will teach you: He has full knowledge of everything.

4:29 An-Nisa

You who believe, do not wrongfully consume each other’s wealth but trade by mutual consent. Do not kill each other, for God is merciful to you.

9:24 At-Tawbah

Say [Prophet], ‘If your fathers, sons, brothers, wives, tribes, the wealth you have acquired, the trade which you fear will decline, and the dwellings you love are dearer to you than God and His Messenger and the struggle in His cause, then wait until God brings about His punishment.’ God does not guide those who break away.

24:36 An-Nur

shining out in houses of worship. God has ordained that they be raised high and that His name be remembered in them, with men in them celebrating His glory morning and evening:

24:37 An-Nur

men who are not distracted, either by commerce or profit, from remembering God, keeping up the prayer, and paying the prescribed alms, fearing a day when hearts and eyes will turn over.

35:29 Fatir

Those who recite God’s scripture, keep up the prayer, give secretly and openly from what We have provided for them, may hope for a trade that will never decline:

61:10 As-Saf

You who believe, shall I show you a bargain that will save you from painful torment?

62:11 Al-Jumu'ah

Yet they scatter towards trade or entertainment whenever they observe it, and leave you [Prophet] standing there. Say, ‘God’s gift is better than any entertainment or trade: God is the best provider.’
