9 verses

In describing the relationship between the sexes, the Quran relies on physical closeness and structural protection, defining husbands and wives as garments for one another (2:187). This mutual covering provides both warmth and a shield from external exposure. As al-Zamakhshari notes on the inherent nature of spouses 2/ 186), human beings naturally lean toward and find familiarity in their own kind, and when a spouse is a part of them, that tranquility and love become most profound.

Where does physical intimacy belong?

The Quran firmly restricts sexual relations to marriage and, within its historical context, bonded slaves, stating that those who confine their intimacy to these bonds are entirely free from blame (23:6, 70:30). Those who lack the financial means to marry are instructed to remain chaste until God provides for them out of His bounty (24:33). The text actively shields vulnerable women from exploitation, explicitly forbidding men from forcing slave-girls into prostitution in a quest for short-term worldly gain. The verse emphasizes the women's own desire to remain honorable, adding that if they are coerced, God remains forgiving and merciful toward them (24:33).

What rules ensure fairness between spouses?

The text dismantles customs that trapped women in unwanted unions or stripped them of their wealth. It is unlawful to inherit women against their will or to treat a wife harshly merely to pressure her into returning the bride-gift she was given, unless she is guilty of something clearly outrageous (4:19). Men are commanded to live with their wives in accordance with what is fair and kind. If a husband develops a dislike for his wife, he is urged to exercise patience, as it may well be that he dislikes something in which God has actually placed much good (4:19). Distinct, strict boundaries were also placed on the Prophet. While general believers had a standard set of obligations regarding wives and slaves, the Prophet was eventually forbidden from taking any further wives or exchanging his existing wives for others, even if their beauty attracted him (33:50, 33:52).

How does the Quran govern marital relations?

Intimacy within marriage is recognized as a natural need subject to specific divine limits. The Quran notes that early believers were betraying themselves by avoiding their spouses during the nights of Ramadan fasts. God pardoned them, making it lawful to eat, drink, and lie with their wives until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black, though relations remain forbidden during devotional retreats in the mosques (2:187). God also directs husbands to refrain from physical intimacy during a wife's menstruation, identifying it as a painful condition, and to resume relations only after she is cleansed (2:222).

Wives are described metaphorically as fields, a term grounded in cultivation, care, and the generation of future life. Husbands are permitted to approach these fields whichever way they like, provided they remain mindful of God, remember that they will eventually meet Him, and actively send something good ahead for themselves (2:223).

2:187 Al-Baqarah

You [believers] are permitted to lie with your wives during the night of the fast: they are [close] as garments to you, as you are to them. God was aware that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy and pardoned you: now you can lie with them- seek what God has ordained for you- eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black. Then fast until nightfall. Do not lie with them during the nights of your devotional retreat in the mosques: these are the bounds set by God, so do not go near them. In this way God makes His messages clear to people, that they may guard themselves against doing wrong.

2:222 Al-Baqarah

They ask you [Prophet] about menstruation. Say, ‘Menstruation is a painful condition, so keep away from women during it. Do not approach them until they are cleansed; when they are cleansed, you may approach them as God has ordained. God loves those who turn to Him, and He loves those who keep themselves clean.

2:223 Al-Baqarah

Your wives are your fields, so go into your fields whichever way you like, and send [something good] ahead for yourselves. Be mindful of God: remember that you will meet Him.’ [Prophet], give good news to the believers.

4:19 An-Nisa

You who believe, it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will, nor should you treat your wives harshly, hoping to take back some of the bride-gift you gave them, unless they are guilty of something clearly outrageous. Live with them in accordance with what is fair and kind: if you dislike them, it may well be that you dislike something in which God has put much good.

23:6 Al-Mu'minun

except with their spouses or their slaves––with these they are not to blame,

24:33 An-Nur

Those who are unable to marry should keep chaste until God gives them enough out of His bounty. If any of your slaves wish to pay for their freedom, make a contract with them accordingly, if you know they have good in them, and give them some of the wealth God has given you. Do not force your slave-girls into prostitution, when they themselves wish to remain honourable, in your quest for the short-term gains of this world, although, if they are forced, God will be forgiving and merciful to them.

33:50 Al-Ahzab

Prophet, We have made lawful for you the wives whose bride gift you have paid, and any slaves God has assigned to you through war, and the daughters of your uncles and aunts on your father’s and mother’s sides, who migrated with you. Also any believing woman who has offered herself to the Prophet and whom the Prophet wishes to wed- this is only for you [Prophet] and not the rest of the believers: We know exactly what We have made obligatory for them concerning their wives and slave-girls- so you should not be blamed: God is most forgiving, most merciful.

33:52 Al-Ahzab

You [Prophet] are not permitted to take any further wives, nor to exchange the wives you have for others, even if these attract you with their beauty. But this does not apply to your slave-girls: God is watchful over all.

70:30 Al-Ma'arij

from all but their spouses or their slave-girls––there is no blame attached to [relations with] these,
