Saul and Samuel

5 verses

The confrontation between the Israelites and the forces of Goliath culminates in an abrupt shift of power, where David kills Goliath and God immediately grants him sovereignty, wisdom, and knowledge of whatever He pleased (2:251). This victory establishes a fundamental historical mechanism: if God did not drive some groups back by means of others, the earth would become completely corrupt. Yet this decisive battle serves as the endpoint of a longer process regarding the nature of divine kingship, tracing back through the selection of an unlikely commander, a miraculous sign of validation, and a stringent test of loyalty on the march to war.

Why did the people object to Talut?

When their prophet initially announces that God has appointed Talut to be their king, the immediate reaction from the people is resistance (2:247). They argue that they possess a greater right to rule than he does, pointing specifically to his lack of great wealth. The prophet answers by entirely redefining the criteria for leadership. He explains that God has explicitly chosen Talut over them and equipped him with two distinct advantages: great knowledge and stature. Rather than relying on noble lineage or financial accumulation, the divine selection prioritizes mental and physical capability. The prophet reminds them that God is magnanimous and all-knowing, granting His authority to whoever He pleases.

What was the sign of his authority?

To validate this unconventional choice of leader, the prophet offers a physical miracle to the doubting Israelites. The definitive sign of Talut's authority is the return of the Ark of the Covenant (2:248). This retrieval is not achieved through a military campaign or human effort; rather, the Ark is carried directly to them by the angels. Inside this vessel rests a gift of tranquility from their Lord, alongside relics left behind by the followers of Moses and Aaron. The prophet states that the arrival of this sacred object serves as a clear sign for them, provided they are true believers.

How did Talut test the soldiers?

Having established his authority, Talut sets out with his forces and institutes a strict physical and psychological trial. He informs the soldiers that God will test them with a river: anyone who drinks deeply from it will no longer belong with him, while those who refrain entirely—or scoop up just one handful—will remain in his ranks (2:249). The vast majority fail the test, drinking deep from the water. Even among the few who successfully cross the river and keep faith, seeing the sheer size of Goliath and his warriors induces immediate despair. They openly confess that they have no strength that day against the enemy.

At this moment of severe numerical disadvantage, a smaller faction within the remaining ranks—specifically those who knew they were going to meet their Lord—shifts the focus from military odds to divine permission (2:249). They remind their companions how often a small force has defeated a large army because God is with those who are steadfast. Stepping onto the battlefield to face Goliath and his warriors, they do not ask for superior weapons or reinforcements, but look to the heavens and pray for God to pour patience on them, make them stand firm, and help them against the disbelievers (2:250).

2:247 Al-Baqarah

Their prophet said to them, ‘God has now appointed Talut to be your king,’ but they said, ‘How can he be king over us when we have a greater right to rule than he? He does not even have great wealth.’ He said, ‘God has chosen him over you, and has given him great knowledge and stature. God grants His authority to whoever He pleases: God is magnanimous, all knowing.’

2:248 Al-Baqarah

Their prophet said to them, ‘The sign of his authority will be that the Ark [of the Covenant] will come to you. In it there will be [the gift of] tranquillity from your Lord and relics of the followers of Moses and Aaron, carried by the angels. There is a sign in this for you if you believe.’

2:249 Al-Baqarah

When Talut set out with his forces, he said to them, ‘God will test you with a river. Anyone who drinks from it will not belong with me, but anyone who refrains from tasting it will belong with me; if he scoops up just one handful [he will be excused].’ But they all drank [deep] from it, except for a few. When he crossed it with those who had kept faith, they said, ‘We have no strength today against Goliath and his warriors.’ But those who knew that they were going to meet their Lord said, ‘How often a small force has defeated a large army with God’s permission! God is with those who are steadfast.’

2:250 Al-Baqarah

And when they met Goliath and his warriors, they said, ‘Our Lord, pour patience on us, make us stand firm, and help us against the disbelievers,’

2:251 Al-Baqarah

and so with God’s permission they defeated them. David killed Goliath, and God gave him sovereignty and wisdom and taught him what He pleased. If God did not drive some back by means of others the earth would be completely corrupt, but God is bountiful to all.
