prostration

20 verses

Shadows cast to the right and left, moving across the ground in a constant, obedient submission to God (16:48). The Quran frames prostration not merely as a human religious ritual, but as the default physical and spiritual posture of the entire universe. Sun, moon, stars, mountains, trees, and animals all yield to their Creator (22:18). Yet, while everything in the heavens and earth falls into this order naturally, human beings possess the unique capacity to either join this cosmic act of worship or stubbornly refuse. The physical motion of bowing down separates those who recognize their place in creation from those who turn away in pride.

Who or what prostrates to God?

The text extends the concept of prostration far beyond the confines of human prayer. Every beast that moves across the earth, along with the angels in the heavens, submits to God, entirely free from arrogance (16:49). Even the beings who live directly in the presence of the Lord are not too proud to worship; they continuously glorify Him and bow down before Him (7:206). This universal submission includes the vast physical elements of the natural world—the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, and the trees—alongside many human beings (22:18). By bowing, a person aligns their physical body with the involuntary submission of the natural world, entering a state of obedience that the rest of creation already maintains seamlessly.

How do believers approach prostration?

For those who choose to submit, the act of prostration is deeply tied to the quiet, unseen hours of the night. The Quran highlights individuals who spend the night bowed down or standing in front of their Lord (25:64). This dedication extends across religious history, recognizing upright individuals among the People of the Book who recite God’s revelations during the night and bow down in worship (3:113). Prostration rarely stands in isolation; it belongs to a broader sequence of active devotion. True believers are characterized as those who turn to God in repentance, praise Him, observe His limits, order what is good, and forbid what is wrong (9:112). God established sacred geography specifically for this physical act, commanding Abraham to purify the site of the House for those who circle it, stand to pray, bow, and prostrate (22:26). The act is intimately observed by the Creator, who watches the Prophet's own movements among the worshippers (26:219).

Why do some refuse to bow?

Refusal to physically humble oneself is framed squarely as a symptom of arrogance. When told specifically to bow down before the Lord of Mercy, those who reject faith mock the command, demanding to know, "What is the Lord of Mercy?" as they turn even further away in aversion (25:60). While angels and the natural world submit willingly, human defiance brings explicit consequences. The text warns that for many who refuse to bow, punishment is well deserved; anyone disgraced by God in this manner will find no one else able to grant them honor (22:18).

Rather than joining the rebellion of those who turn away, the faithful are instructed to root themselves in the posture of the obedient universe. The physical act of lowering oneself to the ground is inextricably linked to ultimate spiritual victory. True success requires the believer to bow down, prostrate themselves, worship their Lord, and actively do good (22:77). When faced with the arrogance of the world, the directive remains direct and physical: celebrate the glory of your Lord and be among those who bow down to Him (15:98).

3:113 Ali 'Imran

But they are not all alike. There are some among the People of the Book who are upright, who recite God’s revelations during the night, who bow down in worship,

7:206 Al-A'raf

[even] those who live in the presence of your Lord are not too proud to worship Him: they glorify Him and bow down before Him.

9:112 At-Tawbah

[The believers are] those who turn to God in repentance; who worship and praise Him; who bow down and pros-trate themselves; who order what is good and forbid what is wrong and who observe God’s limits. Give glad news to such believers.

15:98 Al-Hijr

Celebrate the glory of your Lord and be among those who bow down to Him:

16:48 An-Nahl

Do the [disbelievers] not observe the things that God has created, casting their shadows right and left, submitting themselves to God obediently?

16:49 An-Nahl

It is to God that everything in the heavens and earth submits, every beast that moves, even the angels- they are free from arrogance:

22:18 Al-Hajj

Do you not realize [Prophet] that everything in the heavens and earth submits to God: the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals? So do many human beings, though for many others punishment is well deserved. Anyone disgraced by God will have no one to honour him: God does whatever He will.

22:26 Al-Hajj

We showed Abraham the site of the House, saying, ‘Do not assign partners to Me. Purify My House for those who circle around it, those who stand to pray, and those who bow and prostrate themselves.

22:77 Al-Hajj

Believers, bow down, prostrate yourselves, worship your Lord, and do good so that you may succeed.

25:60 Al-Furqan

Yet when they are told, ‘Bow down before the Lord of Mercy,’ they say, ‘What is the Lord of Mercy? Should we bow down before anything you command?’ and they turn even further away.

25:64 Al-Furqan

those who spend the night bowed down or standing, worshipping their Lord,

26:219 Ash-Shu'ara

and sees your movements among the worshippers:

32:15 As-Sajdah

The only people who truly believe in Our messages are those who, when they are reminded of them, bow down in worship, cele-brate their Lord’s praises, and do not think themselves above this.

39:9 Az-Zumar

What about someone who worships devoutly during the night, bowing down, standing in prayer, ever mindful of the life to come, hoping for his Lord’s mercy? Say, ‘How can those who know be equal to those who do not know?’ Only those who have understanding will take heed.

41:37 Fussilat

The night, the day, the sun, the moon, are only a few of His signs. Do not bow down in worship to the sun or the moon, but bow down to God who created them, if it is truly Him that you worship.

48:29 Al-Fath

Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God’s bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations. This is how they are pictured in the Torah and the Gospel: like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds.

50:40 Qaf

proclaim His praise in the night and at the end of every prayer;

53:62 An-Najm

Bow down before God and worship.

76:26 Al-Insan

bow down before Him, and glorify Him at length by night.

96:19 Al-'Alaq

No! Do not obey him [Prophet]: bow down in worship and draw close.
