Obstinate

The desert Arabs who surrounded Medina, along with some of the city's own inhabitants, were not merely reluctant in their faith; they were actively entrenched in hypocrisy, making them the least likely to recognize the limits God had sent down (9:97, 9:101). This state of obstinacy—a deliberate, knowing resistance—represents a specific spiritual failing. It is not the passive ignorance of someone who has never encountered the message, but an active hostility toward revelation. As al-Qurtubi notes, this describes someone who deliberately opposes and repels the truth despite clearly recognizing it (Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 17/ 17).

What drives a person to reject clear signs?

In the Quran, stubbornness often stems from an inflated sense of self that blinds a person to divine authority. Al-Samin al-Halabi observes that the obstinate individual is frequently someone "impressed with what he has," choosing to oppose and contradict rather than submit (Umdat al-Huffaz, 3/ 130). This inward pride manifests outwardly as a flat refusal of the truth. The text points to a person who reacts to divine signs with absolute defiance: "No! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation" (74:16). The severity of this trait is starkly visible in the desert Arabs of the Prophet’s time, described as the most stubborn of all peoples in their disbelief, cementing themselves in a state where they refused to acknowledge God's boundaries (9:97).

How does stubbornness affect a community?

Obstinacy does not only destroy the individual who harbors it; it creates a destructive hierarchy where entire nations are led astray. The Quran cites the ancient nation of 'Ad, who rejected their Lord's signs and disobeyed His messengers (11:59). Rather than following divine guidance, the people of 'Ad chose to follow "the command of every obstinate tyrant." This reveals a pattern where communities align themselves with the most entrenched, arrogant leaders, compounding their own ruin by submitting to those who actively war against the truth. The tyrant’s refusal to yield becomes the standard for the society that follows him.

What is the fate of the obstinate?

The Quranic response to deliberate hostility is complete defeat. Those who entrenched themselves in hypocrisy around Medina were promised a double punishment before facing a painful return in the Hereafter (9:101). When messengers asked God to decide between them and those who rejected their message, the outcome was absolute: "every obstinate tyrant failed" (14:15). Their ruin in this life is followed by a harrowing reality in the next. As al-Durra explains regarding the aftermath for the obstinate tyrant, his punishment involves being forced to drink festering water in Hell (Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim - al-Durra, 5/ 26).

The ultimate judgment strips away any pretense the defiant maintain in this world. The final decree leaves no room for further argument, ordering the angels of punishment to "hurl every obstinate disbeliever into Hell" (50:24).
