In the Quranic vocabulary, the word for mother (umm) extends beyond the woman who bears a child to denote the origin or core of a thing. The text refers to Mecca as the "Mother of Cities" (6:92) and describes the divine source of all revelation as the "Mother of the Scripture" (13:39). When addressing human motherhood, however, the Quran shifts from grand metaphors to precise legal and physical realities, mapping out the exact financial rights of nursing mothers, their fixed shares of inheritance, and the absolute limits of their religious veneration.

How does the Quran regulate infant care? The foundational text on maternal care focuses on the physical rights and boundaries of nursing. The Quran establishes a standard two-year period for mothers who wish to complete the suckling of their infants (2:233). During this time, the financial burden of clothing and maintenance falls entirely on the father, who must provide for the mother in a fair manner. The guiding legal principle in this arrangement is that a child should not be weaponized in family disputes: "no mother shall be made to suffer harm on account of her child, nor any father on account of his" (2:233). Parents are free to wean the infant early through mutual consent and consultation. If they cannot agree, or if the mother does not nurse, the father must hire and pay a wet nurse. Commenting on this alternative, al-Zamakhshari observes a subtle Quranic reproach toward a mother who creates unnecessary hardship in nursing arrangements, noting that if she is difficult, the child will simply be nursed by another woman (Al-Kashshaf, 4/ 559).

What are a mother's legal and financial rights? A mother receives a mathematically guaranteed share of her deceased child's estate, protected from being written out of a will. If the deceased leaves behind children, the mother inherits one-sixth of the total estate—a ceiling that al-Sa'di confirms remains fixed whenever there are offspring (Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman, 166). If the deceased has no children and no brothers, her share increases to one-third (4:11). The text also secures the financial rights of the mother's other children; surviving siblings are granted a sixth or a third of the estate (4:12), a verse that Ibn Kamal Pasha explicitly links to siblings connected solely through the mother (Tafsir, 3/ 36).

Beyond wealth, the title of mother permanently alters marriage eligibility. A man is strictly forbidden from marrying his biological mother or his wife's mother (4:23). This inviolable status physically extends to the woman who nurses him. As al-Bayhaqi points out, the Quran elevates the "milk-mother" to the exact legal standing of the biological mother concerning marriage prohibitions (Ahkam al-Quran, 1/ 256).

How is the maternal bond portrayed? The Quran frequently highlights the intense emotional weight of the maternal tie. When Moses returns from Sinai to find his people worshipping the golden calf, he violently seizes his brother Aaron by the hair. To defuse Moses's rage and plead for mercy, Aaron bypasses their shared prophethood and appeals directly to their deepest shared vulnerability: "Son of my mother, these people overpowered me!" (7:150).

The text is equally protective of the humanity of Mary, the Quran's most prominently mentioned mother. To dismantle claims of Jesus's divinity, the verses repeatedly emphasize his mother's mortal nature, noting simply that "his mother was a virtuous woman; both ate food" (5:75). On the Day of Judgment, God will interrogate Jesus, asking if he ever commanded humanity to take him and his mother as two gods alongside God—a charge Jesus categorically denies (5:116). Ultimately, the text situates both figures entirely under divine authority, asking whether anyone could have prevented God if He willed to destroy the Messiah, his mother, and everyone else on earth (5:17).

2:233 Al-Baqarah

Mothers suckle their children for two whole years, if they wish to complete the term, and clothing and maintenance must be borne by the father in a fair manner. No one should be burdened with more than they can bear: no mother shall be made to suffer harm on account of her child, nor any father on account of his. The same duty is incumbent on the father’s heir. If, by mutual consent and consultation, the couple wish to wean [the child], they will not be blamed, nor will there be any blame if you wish to engage a wet nurse, provided you pay as agreed in a fair manner. Be mindful of God, knowing that He sees everything you do.

4:11 An-Nisa

Concerning your children, God commands you that a son should have the equivalent share of two daughters. If there are only daughters, two or more should share two-thirds of the inheritance, if one, she should have half. Parents inherit a sixth each if the deceased leaves children; if he leaves no children and his parents are his sole heirs, his mother has a third, unless he has brothers, in which case she has a sixth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. You cannot know which of your parents or your children is more beneficial to you: this is a law from God, and He is all knowing, all wise.

4:12 An-Nisa

You inherit half of what your wives leave, if they have no children; if they have children, you inherit a quarter. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If you have no children, your wives’ share is a quarter; if you have children, your wives get an eighth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If a man or a woman dies leaving no children or parents, but a single brother or sister, he or she should take one-sixth of the inheritance; if there are more siblings, they share one-third between them. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts, with no harm done to anyone: this is a commandment from God: God is all knowing and benign to all.

4:23 An-Nisa

You are forbidden to take as wives your mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal and maternal aunts, the daughters of brothers and daughters of sisters, your milk-mothers and milk-sisters, your wives’ mothers, the stepdaughters in your care- those born of women with whom you have consummated marriage, if you have not consummated the marriage, then you will not be blamed- wives of your begotten sons, two sisters simultaneously- with the exception of what is past: God is most forgiving and merciful-

5:17 Al-Ma'idah

Those who say, ‘God is the Messiah, the son of Mary,’ are defying the truth. Say, ‘If it had been God’s will, could anyone have prevented Him from destroying the Messiah, son of Mary, together with his mother and everyone else on earth? Control of the heavens and earth and all that is between them belongs to God: He creates whatever He will. God has power over everything.’

5:75 Al-Ma'idah

The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger; other messengers had come and gone before him; his mother was a virtuous woman; both ate food [like other mortals]. See how clear We make these signs for them; see how deluded they are.

5:110 Al-Ma'idah

Then God will say, ‘Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour to you and to your mother: how I strengthened you with the holy spirit, so that you spoke to people in your infancy and as a grown man; how I taught you the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; how, by My leave, you fashioned the shape of a bird out of clay, breathed into it, and it became, by My leave, a bird; how, by My leave, you healed the blind person and the leper; how, by My leave, you brought the dead back to life; how I restrained the Children of Israel from [harming] you when you brought them clear signs, and those of them who disbelieved said, “This is clearly nothing but sorcery”;

5:116 Al-Ma'idah

When God says, ‘Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to people, “Take me and my mother as two gods alongside God”?’ he will say, ‘May You be exalted! I would never say what I had no right to say- if I had said such a thing You would have known it: You know all that is within me, though I do not know what is within You, You alone have full knowledge of things unseen-

6:92 Al-An'am

This is a blessed Scripture that We have sent down to confirm what came before it and for you to warn the Mother of Cities and all around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in this Scripture, and do not neglect their prayers.

7:150 Al-A'raf

On his return to his people, angry and aggrieved, Moses said, ‘How foul and evil is what you have done in my absence! Were you so keen to bring your Lord’s judgement forward?’ He threw the tablets down and seized his brother by the hair, pulling him towards him. Aaron said, ‘Son of my mother, these people overpowered me! They almost killed me! Do not give my enemies reason to rejoice! Do not include me with these evildoers!’

13:39 Ar-Ra'd

God erases or confirms whatever He will, and the source of Scripture is with Him.

19:28 Maryam

Sister of Aaron! Your father was not an evil man; your mother was not unchaste!’

19:32 Maryam

to cherish my mother. He did not make me domineering or graceless.

20:38 Taha

We inspired your mother, saying,

20:40 Taha

Your sister went out, saying, “I will tell you someone who will nurse him,” then We returned you to your mother so that she could rejoice and not grieve. Later you killed a man, but We saved you from distress and tried you with other tests. You stayed among the people of Midian for years, then you came here as I ordained.

20:94 Taha

He said, ‘Son of my mother- let go of my beard and my hair!- I was afraid you would say, “You have caused division among the children of Israel and have not heeded what I said.”’

22:2 Al-Hajj

on the Day you see it, every nursing mother will think no more of her baby, every pregnant female will miscarry, you will think people are drunk when they are not, so severe will be God’s torment.

23:50 Al-Mu'minun

We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign; We gave them shelter on a peaceful hillside with flowing water.

24:61 An-Nur

No blame will be attached to the blind, the lame, the sick.Whether you eat in your own houses, or those of your fathers, your mothers, your brothers, your sisters, your paternal uncles, your paternal aunts, your maternal uncles, your maternal aunts, houses you have the keys for, or any of your friends’ houses, you will not be blamed: you will not be blamed whether you eat in company or separately. When you enter any house, greet one another with a greeting of blessing and goodness as enjoined by God. This is how God makes His messages clear to you so that you may understand.

28:7 Al-Qasas

We inspired Moses’ mother, saying, ‘Suckle him, and then, when you fear for his safety, put him in the river: do not be afraid, and do not grieve, for We shall return him to you and make him a messenger.’

28:10 Al-Qasas

The next day, Moses’ mother felt a void in her heart––if We had not strengthened it to make her one of those who believe, she would have revealed everything about him––

28:13 Al-Qasas

We restored him to his mother in this way, so that she might be comforted, not grieve, and know that God’s promise is true, though most of them do not know.

28:59 Al-Qasas

Your Lord would never destroy towns without first raising a messenger in their midst to recite Our messages to them, nor would We destroy towns unless their inhabitants were evildoers.

31:14 Luqman

We have commanded people to be good to their parents: their mothers carried them, with strain upon strain, and it takes two years to wean them. Give thanks to Me and to your parents- all will return to Me.

42:7 Ash-Shuraa

So We have revealed an Arabic Quran to you, in order that you may warn the capital city and all who live nearby. And warn [especially] about the Day of Gathering, of which there is no doubt, when some shall be in the Garden and some in the blazing Flame.

43:4 Az-Zukhruf

It is truly exalted in the Source of Scripture kept with Us, and full of wisdom.

46:15 Al-Ahqaf

We have commanded man to be good to his parents: his mother struggled to carry him and struggled to give birth to him- his bearing and weaning took a full thirty months. When he has grown to manhood and reached the age of forty he [may] say, ‘Lord, help me to be truly grateful for Your favours to me and to my parents; help me to do good work that pleases You; make my offspring good. I turn to You; I am one of those who devote themselves to You.’

80:35 'Abasa
