Jacob (Israel)

Before he was even born, the arrival of Jacob was announced as a sudden, secondary wave of good news to a laughing woman. When God sent messengers to the wife of Abraham, she was told she would bear a son named Isaac, and immediately after him, a grandson named Jacob (11:71). The Quran presents Jacob—also identified directly by the name Israel (19:58)—not as an isolated patriarch, but as a central link in a strict monotheistic sequence.
How does the Quran describe Jacob's prophetic lineage?
Jacob is consistently cited as the bridge between the founding patriarchs and the later prophets of the Israelites. When Abraham abandoned his people and the entities they served besides God, God rewarded him by granting him Isaac and Jacob, establishing them both as prophets with a noble reputation (19:49-50). The Quran describes Jacob as an "additional gift" to Abraham, with God making each of them righteous and guiding them just as He had guided Noah before them (21:72, 6:84).
From this specific lineage, God guided a long succession of messengers. The descendants of this line include David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Zachariah, John, Jesus, and Elijah (6:84-85). Because of this unified chain, the Quran instructs believers to declare their faith in what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, expressly commanding them to make no distinction between any of these prophets (3:84). The revelation sent to Jacob and the Tribes is fundamentally the same message given to Noah and, ultimately, to Muhammad (4:163).
What knowledge and traits did Jacob possess?
Beyond his role as a patriarch, the Quran highlights Jacob’s distinct spiritual understanding during the events involving his sons. The text notes that while his instructions to his sons upon entering a city could not help them against the will of God, they satisfied a specific wish within Jacob himself. The Quran affirms his wisdom, stating explicitly, "He knew well what We had taught him, though most people do not" (12:68).
His primary spiritual legacy was an unwavering commitment to worshiping God alone. Years later, his son Joseph would cite this exact heritage while speaking to others, declaring that he follows the faith of his forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Joseph attributes this pure monotheism entirely to God's grace, noting that their family would never worship anything beside God, even if most people remain ungrateful (12:38).
How is the family of Jacob remembered?
The spiritual inheritance of Jacob carried immense weight for centuries after his death. The idea of the "family of Jacob" represented a standard of prophetic continuity. When the elderly prophet Zachariah stood in the sanctuary, he prayed specifically for a successor who would be his own heir and "the heir of the family of Jacob," asking the Lord to make this child well-pleasing (19:6).
This chosen sequence of prophets, descending through the seed of Adam, those carried in the Ark with Noah, and the seed of Abraham and Israel, maintained a direct awe before their Creator. When the revelations of the Lord of Mercy were recited to them, they fell to their knees and wept (19:58).

قُلْ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ وَمَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَٱلنَّبِيُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ مُسْلِمُونَ
Say [Muhammad], ‘We [Muslims] believe in God and in what has been sent down to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes. We believe in what has been given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We do not make a distinction between any of the [prophets]. It is to Him that we devote ourselves.’
۞ إِنَّآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ كَمَآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ نُوحٍ وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ وَعِيسَىٰ وَأَيُّوبَ وَيُونُسَ وَهَـٰرُونَ وَسُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۚ وَءَاتَيْنَا دَاوُۥدَ زَبُورًا
We have sent revelation to you [Prophet] as We did to Noah and the prophets after him, to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon- to David We gave the book [of Psalms]-
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ كُلًّا هَدَيْنَا ۚ وَنُوحًا هَدَيْنَا مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِۦ دَاوُۥدَ وَسُلَيْمَـٰنَ وَأَيُّوبَ وَيُوسُفَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
We gave him Isaac and Jacob, each of whom We guided, as We had guided Noah before, and among his descendants were David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron- in this way We reward those who do good-
وَزَكَرِيَّا وَيَحْيَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَإِلْيَاسَ ۖ كُلٌّ مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
Zachariah, John, Jesus, and Elijah- every one of them was righteous-
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ قَآئِمَةٌ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهَا بِإِسْحَـٰقَ وَمِن وَرَآءِ إِسْحَـٰقَ يَعْقُوبَ
His wife was standing [nearby] and laughed. We gave her good news of Isaac and, after him, of Jacob.
وَٱتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشْرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ
and I follow the faith of my forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Because of God’s grace to us and to all mankind, we would never worship anything beside God, but most people are ungrateful.
وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةً فِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَا ۚ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
and, when they entered as their father had told them, it did not help them against the will of God, it merely satisfied a wish of Jacob’s. He knew well what We had taught him, though most people do not.
يَرِثُنِى وَيَرِثُ مِنْ ءَالِ يَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَٱجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا
to be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him well pleasing [to You].’
فَلَمَّا ٱعْتَزَلَهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا نَبِيًّا
When he left his people and those they served beside God, We granted him Isaac and Jacob and made them both prophets:
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِنَا وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ عَلِيًّا
We granted Our grace to all of them, and gave them a noble reputation.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ ءَادَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَٱجْتَبَيْنَآ ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ خَرُّوا۟ سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا ۩
These were the prophets God blessed- from the seed of Adam, of those We carried in the Ark with Noah, from the seed of Abraham and Israel- and those We guided and chose. When the revelations of the Lord of Mercy were recited to them, they fell to their knees and wept,
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ نَافِلَةً ۖ وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا صَـٰلِحِينَ
and We gave him Isaac and Jacob as an additional gift, and made each of them righteous.
