Wealth consumed wrongfully stands in direct contrast to trade conducted by mutual consent (4:29). The text establishes commerce (al-bay') not merely as a worldly necessity, but as a strictly regulated interaction that tests human fairness. It aggressively defends the legitimacy of trade against those who try to equate it with exploitative lending. When warning those who take usury, the verses address their specific justification: the claim that "Trade and usury are the same" (2:275). The response is absolute—God permitted trade but forbade usury. As Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri notes (Aysar al-Tafasir, 1/ 269), while people attempt to blur the lines to justify their practices, the divine ruling permanently separates the two concepts, demanding that those who receive the warning stop taking usury and keep only their past gains.
How does the Quran regulate commercial contracts?
The longest single verse in the scripture entirely governs the recording of financial transactions. When contracting a debt for a stated term, believers are commanded to put it in writing (2:282). This requires a scribe to document the terms justly between the parties, writing exactly as God has taught him without refusal. The debtor must dictate the terms, fearing God and not diminishing the amount. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate, their guardian assumes the responsibility to dictate justly.
The process also demands two male witnesses, or one man and two women from approved witnesses, ensuring that if one forgets, the other can remind her. The instruction emphasizes that recording the debt—whether small or large, along with its due date—is more equitable, reliable as testimony, and prevents future doubts arising between parties. However, an exception is granted for merchandise present on the spot and handed over immediately; in such spot trades, there is no blame if the transaction is left unwritten, though witnesses are still required whenever trading occurs (2:282).
When does commerce become a spiritual liability?
Even lawful trade can become a hazard if it displaces higher obligations. The verses warn against loving "the trade which you fear will decline" more than God, His Messenger, and striving in His cause (9:24). This friction appears practically during congregational worship. The text describes an instance where individuals scattered toward trade or entertainment, leaving the Prophet standing alone (62:11). The reminder given is that God’s gift is better than any commercial gain, as He is the best provider. Conversely, high praise is reserved for men who occupy houses of worship, shining out as they celebrate His glory morning and evening—individuals who are not distracted by commerce or profit from remembering God, keeping up prayer, and paying alms (24:36-37).
The vocabulary of commerce frequently shifts into the spiritual realm, turning human choices into literal transactions. Those who reject the truth are described as having "bought error in exchange for guidance," resulting in a trade that reaps no profit (2:16). Believers are instead offered a different bargain: reciting God’s scripture, maintaining the prayer, and giving from their provisions secretly and openly constitutes "a trade that will never decline" (35:29). The ultimate proposition is presented not in gold or silver, but as a direct exchange with the Creator—a bargain that will save you from painful torment (61:10).

They have bought error in exchange for guidance, so their trade reaps no profit, and they are not rightly guided.
But those who take usury will rise up on the Day of Resurrection like someone tormented by Satan’s touch. That is because they say, ‘Trade and usury are the same,’ but God has allowed trade and forbidden usury. Whoever, on receiving God’s warning, stops taking usury may keep his past gains- God will be his judge- but whoever goes back to usury will be an inhabitant of the Fire, there to remain.
You who believe, when you contract a debt for a stated term, put it down in writing: have a scribe write it down justly between you. No scribe should refuse to write: let him write as God has taught him, let the debtor dictate, and let him fear God, his Lord, and not diminish [the debt] at all. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate, then let his guardian dictate justly. Call in two men as witnesses. If two men are not there, then call one man and two women out of those you approve as witnesses, so that if one of the two women should forget the other can remind her. Let the witnesses not refuse when they are summoned. Do not disdain to write the debt down, be it small or large, along with the time it falls due: this way is more equitable in God’s eyes, more reliable as testimony, and more likely to prevent doubts arising between you. But if the merchandise is there and you hand it over, there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses present whenever you trade with one another, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness, for if you did cause them harm, it would be a crime on your part. Be mindful of God, and He will teach you: He has full knowledge of everything.
You who believe, do not wrongfully consume each other’s wealth but trade by mutual consent. Do not kill each other, for God is merciful to you.
Say [Prophet], ‘If your fathers, sons, brothers, wives, tribes, the wealth you have acquired, the trade which you fear will decline, and the dwellings you love are dearer to you than God and His Messenger and the struggle in His cause, then wait until God brings about His punishment.’ God does not guide those who break away.
shining out in houses of worship. God has ordained that they be raised high and that His name be remembered in them, with men in them celebrating His glory morning and evening:
men who are not distracted, either by commerce or profit, from remembering God, keeping up the prayer, and paying the prescribed alms, fearing a day when hearts and eyes will turn over.
Those who recite God’s scripture, keep up the prayer, give secretly and openly from what We have provided for them, may hope for a trade that will never decline:
You who believe, shall I show you a bargain that will save you from painful torment?
Yet they scatter towards trade or entertainment whenever they observe it, and leave you [Prophet] standing there. Say, ‘God’s gift is better than any entertainment or trade: God is the best provider.’
