Husband

البعل

8 verses

Classical Arabic uses the word ba’l for a husband, a term rooted in stewardship. As al-Tabari notes (Jami al-bayan, 15/399), early Arabs applied this exact word to a palm tree that thrives solely on rainwater without needing artificial irrigation, because the root signifies the manager or sustainer of a thing. In the Quran, the position of the husband involves this degree of responsibility and management (2:228), but the text frames this role within intensely practical scenarios. Rather than idealized portraits, the verses address aging husbands (11:72), men causing alienation (4:128), and husbands facing the brink of divorce.

Mediating Marital Friction

The Quran anticipates that a husband and wife will face periods of estrangement. If a wife fears high-handedness or emotional alienation from her husband, the text advises that they seek a peaceful settlement between themselves, recognizing that human souls are inherently prone to selfishness (4:128). When the friction threatens to break the couple apart entirely, the intervention broadens. The community is instructed to appoint one arbiter from the husband’s family and one from the wife’s family (4:35). The success of this mediation hinges on the couple's internal intentions; the verse promises that if the husband and wife genuinely want to put things right, God will bring about their reconciliation.

In cases where a husband's behavior requires a higher appeal, the Quran elevates the wife's grievance. When a woman disputed with the Prophet regarding her husband, God directly validated her distress, declaring that He heard their entire conversation and her complaint (58:1).

Separation and the Option to Return

If the marriage cannot be repaired, the Quran sets strict procedural bounds for the husband during a divorce. During the mandatory three-month waiting period, a husband holds the right to take his wife back, but only under the strict condition that his intention is to put things right (2:228). The text insists that rights and obligations between spouses are similar and must be handled according to what is recognized as fair, even as it notes the husband retains a degree of right over them in this structure.

Should the divorce finalize, the Quran actively protects the woman's right to her former husband if both parties later choose to reunite. Relatives and community members are explicitly forbidden from preventing a divorced woman from remarrying her husband if they have reached a fair mutual agreement (2:232). However, this cycle of return has a hard limit. If a husband re-divorces his wife after the second divorce, she is no longer lawful to him. He cannot act as her husband again unless she marries another man, and that subsequent marriage also ends in divorce (2:230).

Despite the extensive legal framework surrounding disputes, the fundamental state of the marriage is one of exclusive physical and emotional trust. The Quran instructs believing women to guard their private parts and not reveal their hidden charms to anyone except a specific circle of kin, placing husbands at the very front of this permitted list (24:31). The role of the husband is thus defined by this private access and the immense responsibility that accompanies it. When a ruptured marriage contemplates reforming, the entire arrangement rests on a single criterion: the man and woman may only return to one another provided they feel certain they can keep within the bounds set by God (2:230).

2:228 Al-Baqarah

Divorced women must wait for three monthly periods before remarrying, and, if they really believe in God and the Last Day, it is not lawful for them to conceal what God has created in their wombs: their husbands would do better to take them back during this period, provided they wish to put things right. Wives have [rights] similar to their [obligations], according to what is recognized to be fair, and husbands have a degree [of right] over them: [both should remember that] God is almighty and wise.

2:230 Al-Baqarah

If a husband re-divorces his wife after the second divorce, she will not be lawful for him until she has taken another husband; if that one divorces her, there will be no blame if she and the first husband return to one another, provided they feel that they can keep within the bounds set by God. These are God’s bounds, which He makes clear for those who know.

2:232 Al-Baqarah

When you divorce women and they have reached their set time, do not prevent them from remarrying their husbands if they both agree to do so in a fair manner. Let those of you who believe in God and the Last Day take this to heart: that is more wholesome and purer for you. God knows and you do not.

4:35 An-Nisa

If you [believers] fear that a couple may break up, appoint one arbiter from his family and one from hers. Then, if the couple want to put things right, God will bring about a reconciliation between them: He is all knowing, all aware.

4:128 An-Nisa

If a wife fears high-handedness or alienation from her husband, neither of them will be blamed if they come to a peaceful settlement, for peace is best. Although human souls are prone to selfishness, if you do good and are mindful of God, He is well aware of all that you do.

11:72 Hud

She said, ‘Alas for me! How am I to bear a child when I am an old woman, and my husband here is an old man? That would be a strange thing!’

24:31 An-Nur

And tell believing women that they should lower their glances, guard their private parts, and not display their charms beyond what [it is acceptable] to reveal; they should let their headscarves fall to cover their necklines and not reveal their charms except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their womenfolk, their slaves, such men as attend them who have no sexual desire, or children who are not yet aware of women’s nakedness; they should not stamp their feet so as to draw attention to any hidden charms. Believers, all of you, turn to God so that you may prosper.

58:1 Al-Mujadila

God has heard the words of the woman who disputed with you [Prophet] about her husband and complained to God: God has heard what you both had to say. He is all hearing, all seeing.
