Quranic theme
those evil
19 verses
The Quran twice halts its description of humanity’s final division to ask a rhetorical question of pure dismay: "Those on the Left––what people they are!" (56:9, 56:41). In the scriptural classification of the afterlife, this group stands in absolute ruin. The verses detailing their condition do not merely list physical torments; they draw a direct line between the earthly comforts these individuals abused and the precise, suffocating environment they will eventually endure. Their reality is framed entirely by what they rejected during their lives.
Why are they condemned to the Left?
The text establishes that their punishment is the result of a specific, deliberate worldly posture rather than an arbitrary assignment. Before their condemnation, these individuals "overindulged in luxury" and "persisted in great sin" (56:45-46). The Quran links their material excess directly to their spiritual stubbornness. Their wealth and comfort did not result in gratitude; instead, it bred an intellectual arrogance that refused to look beyond the immediate physical world.
This persistence in sin was anchored by a vocal and mocking disbelief in accountability. They openly challenged the mechanics of resurrection, reducing the human experience to mere decomposition. They would ask, "What? When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up?" (56:47). To emphasize the perceived absurdity of a life after death, they extended their skepticism to the distant past, questioning whether "our earliest forefathers too" would be brought back (56:48). Fundamentally, they are defined by this unbroken trajectory—they are the ones who "have gone astray and denied the truth" (56:51).
What environment awaits them?
The environment constructed for the companions of the left is a precise inversion of earthly relief. In the material world, wind, water, and shade are the fundamental elements of survival and comfort, particularly in harsh climates. Yet, in their designated afterlife, the Quran strips these elements of their life-giving properties. They will "dwell amid scorching wind and scalding water" (56:42).
Even when seeking shelter from this unrelenting heat, the refuge provided is a physical mockery of comfort. They are placed "in the shadow of black smoke" (56:43). The text explicitly notes that this shadow is "neither cool nor refreshing" (56:44). The luxury they once overindulged in is replaced by a landscape where every sensory experience—breathing the wind, seeking a drink, or finding shade—is weaponized into constant, inescapable exposure.
How is their denial answered?
To address their specific skepticism about the resurrection of ancient, decomposed bodies, the Quran issues a direct, unyielding response. God instructs the Prophet to tell them that the mechanics of time, physical decay, and human history pose no barrier to divine authority. The answer is stripped of any debate or negotiation: "The earliest and latest generations will all be gathered on a predetermined Day" (56:49-50).
The very ancestors they cited as proof that resurrection was impossible will be present alongside them. When that appointed moment arrives, those who went astray and denied the truth will find themselves standing exactly where they claimed they could never be, forced into the scorching wind and the shadow of black smoke (56:42-43, 56:51).

Those on the Left––what people they are!
But those on the Left, what people they are!
They will dwell amid scorching wind and scalding water
in the shadow of black smoke,
neither cool nor refreshing.
Before, they overindulged in luxury
and persisted in great sin,
always saying, ‘What? When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up?
And our earliest forefathers too?’
Say [Prophet], ‘The earliest and latest generations
will all be gathered on a predetermined Day
and you who have gone astray and denied the truth
will eat from the bitter tree of Zaqqum,
filling your bellies with it,
and drink scalding water,
lapping it like thirsty camels.’
but if he is one of those who denied the truth and went astray,
he will be welcomed with scalding water.
He will burn in Hell.
