Blame
13 verses
Human beings constantly trade fault over social expectations. When the women of the city gossiped about the minister's wife, she presented the man in question to them, demanding, "This is the one you blamed me for," while openly admitting she tried to seduce him and threatening him with prison and degradation if he refused her commands (12:32). The Quran contrasts these shifting societal judgments with the unyielding reality of divine accountability, stripping away excuses until only personal responsibility remains.
Who bears the ultimate fault?
On the day when all matters are decided, the instinct to cast fault onto others is entirely dismantled. The text illustrates this sharply through Satan's final address from Hell. He admits his promises were false and his power was limited to a mere invitation, telling those who followed him, "do not blame me; blame yourselves" (14:22). He rejects their previous association of him with God, confirming that neither can he help them, nor can they help him. This stark standard of personal accountability applies unequivocally. Pharaoh was seized and thrown into the sea alongside his forces because "he was to blame" (51:40). Even chosen messengers face the immediate consequences of their missteps; Jonah was swallowed by the great fish precisely because "he had committed blameworthy acts" (37:142).
When should we ignore reproach?
Faith requires an immunity to hostile public opinion. When detailing the traits of people He loves, God describes believers who are humble toward each other and firm against disbelievers, and who strive in His path "without fearing anyone’s reproach" (5:54). The Prophet himself is instructed to ignore those who reject the message, assured that he has fulfilled his duty and is "not to blame" (51:54). Rather than fearing human criticism, the Quran redirects anxiety toward the fear of divine censure. Setting up another deity beside God guarantees being thrown into Hell, "blamed and rejected" (17:39). This demand for balance extends directly into daily living; believers are advised against both tight-fistedness and reckless open-handedness, warning that financial extremes will leave a person "blamed and overwhelmed with regret" (17:29).
How is fault forgiven or lifted?
While establishing strict moral parameters, the text also models the profound relief of pardoning others. After enduring years of betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, Joseph finally confronts the brothers who sold him. Possessing total power over them, he immediately waives his right to retribution, declaring, "You will hear no reproaches today. May God forgive you: He is the Most Merciful of the merciful" (12:92). Furthermore, the Quran explicitly removes moral censure from lawful human bonds. When defining the virtues of those who guard their chastity, it specifies that within the bounds of marriage or legitimate possession, "they are not to blame" (23:5-6, 70:29).
The true terror of accountability is not the sting of human criticism in this life, but the agonizing realization of one's own irreversible choices. Standing amidst a bitter torment, the wrongdoers are left with no scapegoat, facing an adversary who simply abandons them to their own admission of fault, saying only: do not blame me; blame yourselves (14:22).

You who believe, if any of you go back on your faith, God will soon replace you with people He loves and who love Him, people who are humble towards the believers, hard on the disbelievers, and who strive in God’s way without fearing anyone’s reproach. Such is God’s favour. He grants it to whoever He will. God has endless bounty and knowledge.
She said, ‘This is the one you blamed me for. I tried to seduce him and he wanted to remain chaste, but if he does not do what I command now, he will be put in prison and degraded.’
but he said, ‘You will hear no reproaches today. May God forgive you: He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.
When everything has been decided, Satan will say, ‘God gave you a true promise. I too made promises but they were false ones: I had no power over you except to call you, and you responded to my call, so do not blame me; blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I reject the way you associated me with God before.’ A bitter torment awaits such wrongdoers,
Do not be tight-fisted, nor so open-handed that you end up blamed and overwhelmed with regret.
[Prophet], this is some of the wisdom your Lord has revealed to you: do not set up another god beside God, or you will be thrown into Hell, blamed and rejected.
who guard their chastity
except with their spouses or their slaves––with these they are not to blame,
and a great fish swallowed him, for he had committed blameworthy acts.
so We seized him and his forces and threw them into the sea: he was to blame.
so ignore them [Prophet]- you are not to blame-
who guard their chastity
from all but their spouses or their slave-girls––there is no blame attached to [relations with] these,
