Every created entity in the heavens and the earth inherently answers to its Creator, obeying His will entirely (2:116, 30:26). This continuous state of submission is rooted in the Arabic concept of qunoot, which, as noted by Bakr bin al-Ala (Ahkam al-Quran li-Bakr bin al-Ala, 1/265), fundamentally means for a person to continuously maintain an act of obedience to God. Rather than a fleeting moment of compliance, the Quran frames this devotion as an enduring posture of both the heart and body. It serves as a dividing line in theological disputes; when challenged to argue about God by other groups, the Quran instructs believers to simply state that their deeds are their own, adding, "We devote ourselves entirely to Him" (2:139).
How is obedience expressed in prayer?
The physical manifestation of this obedience is tied directly to the act of standing before God. The Quran instructs believers to "Take care to do your prayers, praying in the best way, and stand before God in devotion" (2:238). Classical scholars highlight this physical dimension; Ahkam al-Quran lil-Shafi'i (1/78) notes that qunoot encompasses the entire standing portion of the prayer. This bodily devotion requires stillness and focus, which Kiya al-Harrasi identifies as both prolonged standing and silence (Ahkam al-Quran lil-Kiya al-Harrasi, 1/215). God explicitly commands Mary to physically embody this devotion: "Mary, be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself in worship, bow down with those who pray" (3:43).
What are the traits of the obedient?
The Quran emphasizes that this continuous devotion applies equally to men and women, promising them forgiveness and a rich reward. It places obedience directly in the center of a dense sequence of virtues: believing, truthful, steadfast, humble, charitable, fasting, chaste, and remembering God often (33:35). Al-Qurazi observes that almost every mention of qunoot in the Quran refers to this broader, active obedience (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Mathur, 4/350). These are not passive individuals; the truly devout are specifically described as those who are steadfast, who give in God's cause, and who wake up to pray before dawn for forgiveness (3:17).
How does devotion shape the household?
Beyond formal worship, this continuous obedience anchors family dynamics. Righteous wives are explicitly described as devout, characterized by guarding what God would have them guard in their husbands’ absence (4:34). When the Quran outlines the supreme qualities of a spouse—even as a hypothetical replacement for the Prophet's own wives—it lists devotion to God alongside being true believers, repentant, given to fasting, and dedicated to worship (66:5). For the wives of the Prophet themselves, this specific obedience carried an elevated promise: if any of them was obedient to God and His Messenger and performed good deeds, she would receive a double reward and a generous provision (33:31).
The culmination of this steadfast obedience is realized in the person of Mary, daughter of Imran. In a scripture that links the vast submission of the cosmos down to the quiet acts of pre-dawn prayers, she remains the permanent human archetype. She guarded her chastity, causing God to breathe into her from His spirit, and she fully accepted the truth of her Lord’s words and Scriptures: she was truly devout (66:12).

وَقَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدًا ۗ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ ۖ بَل لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ كُلٌّ لَّهُۥ قَـٰنِتُونَ
They have asserted, ‘God has a child.’ May He be exalted! No! Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, everything devoutly obeys His will.
قُلْ أَتُحَآجُّونَنَا فِى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكُمْ وَلَنَآ أَعْمَـٰلُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ مُخْلِصُونَ
Say [Prophet] [to the Jews and Christians], ‘How can you argue with us about God when He is our Lord and your Lord? Our deeds belong to us, and yours to you. We devote ourselves entirely to Him.
حَـٰفِظُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلصَّلَوَٰتِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱلْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا۟ لِلَّهِ قَـٰنِتِينَ
Take care to do your prayers, praying in the best way, and stand before God in devotion.
ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ وَٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ وَٱلْمُنفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ بِٱلْأَسْحَارِ
those who are steadfast, truthful, truly devout, who give [in God’s cause] and pray before dawn for forgiveness.’
يَـٰمَرْيَمُ ٱقْنُتِى لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسْجُدِى وَٱرْكَعِى مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ
Mary, be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself in worship, bow down with those who pray.’
ٱلرِّجَالُ قَوَّٰمُونَ عَلَى ٱلنِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ وَبِمَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ ۚ فَٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ قَـٰنِتَـٰتٌ حَـٰفِظَـٰتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ وَٱلَّـٰتِى تَخَافُونَ نُشُوزَهُنَّ فَعِظُوهُنَّ وَٱهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِى ٱلْمَضَاجِعِ وَٱضْرِبُوهُنَّ ۖ فَإِنْ أَطَعْنَكُمْ فَلَا تَبْغُوا۟ عَلَيْهِنَّ سَبِيلًا ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيًّا كَبِيرًا
Husbands should take good care of their wives, with [the bounties] God has given to some more than others and with what they spend out of their own money. Righteous wives are devout and guard what God would have them guard in their husbands’ absence. If you fear high-handedness from your wives, remind them [of the teachings of God], then ignore them when you go to bed, then hit them.If they obey you, you have no right to act against them: God is most high and great.
وَلَهُۥ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ كُلٌّ لَّهُۥ قَـٰنِتُونَ
Everyone in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, and all are obedient to Him.
۞ وَمَن يَقْنُتْ مِنكُنَّ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتَعْمَلْ صَـٰلِحًا نُّؤْتِهَآ أَجْرَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهَا رِزْقًا كَرِيمًا
but if any of you is obedient to God and His Messenger and does good deeds, know that We shall give her a double reward and have prepared a generous provision for her.
إِنَّ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَٱلْمُسْلِمَـٰتِ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ وَٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ وَٱلْقَـٰنِتَـٰتِ وَٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰدِقَـٰتِ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرَٰتِ وَٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَ وَٱلْخَـٰشِعَـٰتِ وَٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ وَٱلْمُتَصَدِّقَـٰتِ وَٱلصَّـٰٓئِمِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰٓئِمَـٰتِ وَٱلْحَـٰفِظِينَ فُرُوجَهُمْ وَٱلْحَـٰفِظَـٰتِ وَٱلذَّٰكِرِينَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَٱلذَّٰكِرَٰتِ أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
For men and women who are devoted to God- believing men and women, obedient men and women, truthful men and women, steadfast men and women, humble men and women, charitable men and women, fasting men and women, chaste men and women, men and women who remember God often- God has prepared forgiveness and a rich reward.
عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُۥٓ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُۥٓ أَزْوَٰجًا خَيْرًا مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَـٰتٍ مُّؤْمِنَـٰتٍ قَـٰنِتَـٰتٍ تَـٰٓئِبَـٰتٍ عَـٰبِدَٰتٍ سَـٰٓئِحَـٰتٍ ثَيِّبَـٰتٍ وَأَبْكَارًا
His Lord may well replace you with better wives if the Prophet decides to divorce any of you: wives who are devoted to God, true believers, devout, who turn to Him in repentance and worship Him, given to fasting, whether previously married or virgins.
وَمَرْيَمَ ٱبْنَتَ عِمْرَٰنَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتْ بِكَلِمَـٰتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ
and Mary, daughter of Imran. She guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her from Our spirit. She accepted the truth of her Lord’s words and Scriptures: she was truly devout.
